for me, there are two main aspects: 1) letting your units deal damage for as long as possible 2) making sure your opponent's units deal as little damage as possible ---------------- HOW? ---------------- melee vs melee units the trick here is to have the bigger arch around the enemy. That can sometimes be tough becaues you are usually outnumbered in micro wars. the way to do it, is spread your units in a line/semi circle and attack what you'll see happen is the following: a big chunk of your units will attack a small chunk of his units (typically), so you are dealing more damage to that group than he is giving back. the problem is that HIS big group is dealing more damage to your SMALL group. to prevent that, after 2-3 second of fighting, pull your SMALL group behind your LARGE group (which should've killed the enemy's small group by now) and attack again. the same small->big thing will happen (but less drastic), so rinse-and-repeat. eventually you will kill his units unless you're outnumbered horribly melee vs ranged ------------ if you got melee against ranged units, the trick here is to flank and make sure all your units start attacking as soon as possible. to do that, typically you can do one of two things: split your force in two groups and attack the enemy from two sides OR split your force in two groups, attack as one group, but make one of your groups run around the enemy, then engage. what'll happen is all your units will engage fairly quickly instead of waiting behind your own units, waiting for them to die range vs range ------------- well this is basically the same thing as melee vs melee. also remember to use cliff advantage or tree advantage if you can range vs melee ------------- trick here is to use your range. realize that melee units take time to reach your ranged units. hence, there are four possible ways of fighting this 1) if your units are faster, you can hit-and-run (i.e. attack, run away, make some distance, attack, run away etc.) what'll happen is that melee units cannot deal much damage to your ranged units 2) if your units are slower BUT his melee units are weak (i.e. goons vs lings) you ccan still perform the hit-and-run tactic because his weak units will be destroyed fairly quickly without dealing damage 3) just keep an arch around him, and watch carefully where most of his units go. then, pull that part of your ranged units away from his melee units. you can watch Enough's reps or Chojja's they do some crazy stuff of hydra vs zealot or sommething similar 4) if you can choke his units and force them to attack in a line, go for it. a ramp, a tight passage whatever, if something prevents his melee units from engaging as fast as possible, use it Splash damage ------------- you might see something like 5 marines vs a reaver. obviously you realize that a reaver kills a marine in one hit, so you can stim if you can because you will still die twice as fast. the important thing to remember is that the strenght of a reaver, or some other splash units (sair valks archon w/e) is their SPLASH - split your units as much as possible. if you engage and your units clump up (more than often especially air vs air), split them because it is more efficient to split them since they will deal more damage over a longer period of time. spellcasters ------------ well figure this one on your own ther's too many Preventing enemy units from dealing much damage to you simple answer: FOCUS FIRE if you have like 12 goli vs 5 bc, if you don't focus fire you will lose. but if you shift-attack them through each bc, they will focus fire and eliminate the units quicker, thus lessening the amount of damage the enemy deals per second well, there's probably tons that i forgot but basics are here i suppose

like that level where you have about 12 z vs like 9 z and 6 marine. you kill the rines first sine they deal lots of dmg but don't live long vs a zealot terran training it's also same thing just first level is a combination of splash/ range vs melee i pass the terran training map in case you're wondering -.-

also, try to force ur opponent mentally into a worse position. if ur playing someone u know is better its often best to get a mental edge on the battle so u can micro out better. this can be done with harass and more importantly simultaneous harass. eg u raid a min line and simultaneously blanket his army in storms. often he will take longer to react to the drop than u (move scv, set tank etc) and u can get a manueouvre like luring units to great effect because u get his stuff to walk into ur established trap before he turns from ur harassment . flanking is an important part of micro. gettin ur units into a fork etc etc. also, always have a fast escape route (back door, shuttle for important/expensive units). and something ive noticed lately is when ur say raiding a base or breaking an army, he will try to lead some of ur troops away with easy micro. this can split ur army and make it defeatable "divide and conquer" style. zergs often do this leading 1 hydra away taking a few zeals with it. makes ur army mincemeat remember to have ur shit hotkeyed and keep em close and supporting each other. about knowing wat to run from, have good recon. BEFORE u attack send a probe/zeal to scope him out and see if u can take it. cuz its less expensive to lose 1 zealot than 4-5 zeals and goons too before u realise u were being cocksure. u prolli know alot of this, but if u look at it critically u notice how many times u forget these simple things in practice. also those micro maps dont mean shit. i suc at them cuz i dont abuse ai etc etc. but i always beat my friend in games due to multitasking and micro but in micro maps he owns me
