Looking at new computer monitors and wondering how sc looks on 16: 9?

Anyone have any experience with this setup or care to share their knowledge, it would be appreciated.

Even if it looks like crap at 16: 9 to you as it does to most people you can just display it at its native resolution just fine.

16: 9 is not for SC man. Change it back to 4:3 when you play.

No matter what your screens aspect ratio is (mine is 16:10) you are going to want to display sc in it's native ratio or else it'll be all stretched and messed up so it doesn't really matter.

I play it in widescreen all the time. It's not bad at all I dunno what these guys are talking about. It's not like SC looks better at all in standard ratio.

On my graphics card control panel thing there is an option along the lines of "Run Programs in Native Resolution." I had to dl some drivers and stuff first though, but it wasn't too hard to figure out.

And on some cards the programmers who made the drivers are retards and these options don't work correctly, like for me when i got my 8800 GTS. I haven't checked in driver updates tho, I'm kinda used to the widescreen SC now.

i play on widescreen all the time. after you get used to it, i don't think there's a ton of difference.

i don't see why not, after you get used to it

I don't like playing in 16 : 9/10 since the mouse moves faster in the X-axis than the Y-axis due to the screen being horizontally stretched.
I just set my graphics card to scale SC to 4:3 when I play.

I'm so used to playing SC at 16:10 that it feels wrong playing it at 4:3 ratio.

might feel weird at start but you'll get used to it.

use the below "Image Scaling" setting for ATI 48xx cards to play SC at 4:3

Some people can get their card to force the 4:3 aspect ratio, and some can't. With Nvidia's latest drivers (and unless you have specifically the 8800GT), you won't be able to. I have no idea about ATI. Some monitors have the option as well but mine didn't.

As for playing Starcraft in 16 : 9 and 16 : 10, it's not just that it looks bad - it plays inaccurately. When the picture is stretched horizontally, your cursor will move much faster horizontally than vertically. You can get used to it but you'll never reach the same level of precision as you could with the correct ratio.

Personally, I got so sick of Stretchcraft that I bought a 2nd monitor - 15", 1024x768 (only $70). Now I have a good deal more desktop space, and whenever I want to play SC I just set the 15" as the main.

You can change this on Nvidia Cards too - open the Nvidia Control Center, go to "Change Flatscreen Scaling" or something like that, select "Use Nvidia Scaling with fixed aspect ratio". Exact text may be different, because mine is in German. Image below, also in German though:

I seriously can't understand you guys saying that playing BW in 16: 9 is just dandy. I tried it, and I hated it! Like kinky says, the mouse moves at different speeds on the Y-axis and the X-axis and it is just terrible. I ended up buying a new comp with a graphics card that I knew had scaling options (9800GT) and now I play in 4:3 on a 16: 9 monitor.

But to answer Zyrek, I guess it is a matter of preference. You will probably quickly figure out if the stretching is acceptable to you, and if not, you can probably set your monitor to show SC in 4:3. What graphics card do you use?

Edit: 16: 9 instead of 16. Stupid auto-smileys

I play with 16/10 on my Laptop and I had never any problem. I also have an older Laptop with 1024x768 (4x3) and sometimes I switched when my brother or his gf was on mine to watch a film or so, and it was almost the same.

all I do when I change the environment, is some "calibration". thats what I hate so much about the Nintendo Wii, mostly only Player 1 can see the pointer on the screen and has the advantage of permanent "calibration".
