So I just installed Windows 7 beta, and I'm liking it in a number of ways.
However, I noticed when I play starcraft I'm getting this weird color messup (kind of like when you alt tab a lot and sometimes it gets messed up with weird colors), except on XP whenever that happened, it went away once I got into the game. This time I tried making a game and it was still partially there (the most notable place was the edges of fog of war... there was like this white line around the edges, it was pretty annoying).
I tried going into compatibility modes, and I tried running in 256 colors in the compatibility tab, but nothing will fix it T_T
Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Does anyone else with the windows 7 beta have this problem?
This was a problem with Vista/XP until 1.15.3, so it is probably the same issue until Blizzard releases a patch to fix that colour issue as well. However, it seems odd that they would have too, since the impression I got from the 1.15.3 patch was that the colour processing code was changed to allow for systems without the correct 8-bit colour palette. Maybe Windows 7 has a different palette again. Strange.
I'm not sure if this will work but whenever that happens to me with alt+tabbing usually you can fix the problem by just alt tabbing again and the problem goes away.

lol nah when it first happened i tried alt tabbing like 50 times

In "compatibility options" (if they still have it in Windows 7) and you can change color options to 256 colors. That's how it worked in Vista, anyway.
As said in the OP i tried that and it didn't fix it.
And no, it doesn't have "all sorts of BW problems," this is the only one. Everything else with it is perfectly fine, just the colors are a little messed up.
i have the exact same problem! i tried all the compatibility shit and nothing works. also, i'm dual booting vista, and the colors are perfectly fine in vista :S
This happens to me on vista sometimes. I had to disable the "High desktop scaling" or something like that. Basically it took away my transparency while bw was opened :/ Also I had to disable xfire ingame.

Go into Nvidia's display options (Display -> Advance -> something something until you get to the Nvidia control panel), in manage 3D settings go to program settings tab, add StarCraft and turn off everything.

This didn't work for me on a 7600GT. Could you maybe post a screen of your settings?

Method C: Graphics driver issue. Windows 7 comes with default drivers, but these are not yet fully optimized (as it IS a beta). In this order, try these drivers. Remember to uninstall old drivers first. 1) Win7 drivers for ATI or Nvidia from website. Win7 drivers for Intel from mobo's website 2) Win7 drivers from Win7 install / Windows Update (default) 3) Vista drivers for ATI / Nvidia / Intel from respective websites 4) WinXP drivers in XP compatiblity mode (almost never works)

The ugliest interface ever made was Windows XP and its default candyland look. Windows 7 (basically Windows Vista Aero with max transparency) is a huge improvement. I daresay it looks even better than OS X Leopard or even a fully tricked out KDE.

What? Mac looks shitty too, I don't like the graphics any of this crap uses. You know how SC b.net looks? Thats nice and gritty and basic, no confusion, no extra whistles or bullshit. Just simple, how XP should be.
I did digging too, didn´t notice prayanavitas solution earlier but THX for it, I´ll definitely use it until something more convenient shows up if it something ever shows up.
I just found this in Blizzard Forums made by user Eggboi 2 days ago.( I found out it was older solution though):
the 2nd line needs to direct towards your SC Directory (so C\"Games\Starcraft"\"StarCraft.exe" for a lot of you)
When you save the file, save it as a .bat file and use that to launch Starcraft. It will terminate explorer while SC is running, and when you close SC explorer automatically restarts. This is the only fix i have found that works for my setup; Windows 7, Build 7100 w/ Nvidia 7950 GT.
Hope this works for you!"
So this is a more scientic solution for all the fullscreen mode color bug and crashing. But it´s only for original starcraft client and it can´t work with Iccup because you have to use IccupLauncher to start the game. But I guess it wouldn´t be too hard for any real geek make it work with Iccuplauncher right like modify the launchers coding to start the game with that .bat file?? Don´t know if it shows up as hack or smthn then.
E. Yeah there was a newer thread than this but I really didn´t get anything of it so I posted here where were some actual solutions. If there is some real solutions already I´d be pleased to know because windowmode sucks. Also the crashing and color problems seem to have different roots. I guess I can handle the crashing but don´t know about the color thing.
Actually I´m starting to feel dumb here, am I the only 7 user still with this problem? I have installed right drivers and all...
i dunno if this was mentioned but i found somewhere an explanation that the windows 7 taskbar is always on top and this messes up the colors
if you start the iccup launcher then close all instances of explorer.exe such that there is no taskbar, then run the game, the color problem should be fixed

Yeah but you can´t use that with Iccup launcher. Only when playing in bnet. Well I guess there is only these tricks I can use to surpass this problem with IccupLauncher but nothing permanent like that :I
Actually my problem has somehow changed after changing to the RC version of windows 7. By playing around with the properties of starcraft exe I got Iccuplauncher to start it in fullscreen in the right colors but then I can´t connect to Iccup. oh shit, gotta try some other trick then.
Umm that´s just what I did and yes you can. Right click on starcraft->properties->compability-> and under settings tick run in 256 colours and 640x480. Then it looks just fine but I can´t connect to Iccup.

If you change the setting back and get crap color can you connect to iccup? If not I think that is an unrelated problem.
Umm no. oh my god, I just played yesterday evening. So why can´t I get to Iccup! Aww.... Is Iccup down on someone else?
E. So actually Iccup went down just when I started to solve this color problem O.O That´s some timing. Well I got the fullscreen working now I guess so thx even though I didn´t really use anyones help. And the crashing in fullscreen mode is a different thing then? I try to use that processor thingy ( make it use only one processor).
I was having problems with Starcraft crashing in Windows 7 (64-bit) when using multi core processor.
I created a small plugin for ChaosLauncher to automatically change the affinity for Starcraft to the first processor. The problem is that this really won't help me when using the ICCUP launcher.
For those having problems with Starcraft freezing in Windows 7 64-bit using multicore:
I've made a plugin that changes the affinity of Starcraft so that it only uses the first processor. This has fixed the problems I had with Starcraft freezing/hard-locking.
Affinity plugin works with ChaosLauncher... or you can (kinda) make it work in ICCUP Launcher:
Go to ICCUP launcher dir (usually Starcraft dir c:\Program Files (x86)\Starcraft in Win7) Rename Chaosplugin.bwl to Chaosplugin_original.bwl Extract AffinityPlugin.zip to Starcraft directory (get it from http://tveitec.com/AffinityPlugin.zip) Rename AffinityPlugin.bwl to Chaosplugin.bwl Run ICCUP launcher. Tick the ChaosPlugin checkbox in ICCUP launcher.
You'll lose the Chaos Plugin abilities, but for me it doesn't freeze in Windows 7 anymore.

My colors were fine during some builds, messed up during other builds of Windows 7. A few months ago I gave up during troubleshooting and made a few batch files that fixed the problem for any version of Win7. These simply kill explorer while Starcraft is running.
If you're just playing on Battle.net, no launchers, just run this and it'll launch Starcraft automatically. Starcraft
If you're using either Chaoslauncher or Iccup launcher, run the launcher, start starcraft, tab out and run this file, then tab back in. When you're finished playing, hit enter to restore explorer. StarcraftLauncher
When better video drivers are released and I finally update to RTM, I'll figure out something better.

Sry didn´t work for me. I lost the Chaoslauncher settings so I´m pretty sure I did everything right. BW has crashed now 3games in a row :/ I would play with window mode even though is messes up the mouse and doesn´t feel right, but the game won´t even start in w-mode.
My theory is that it relates to widescreen monitors. I first installed it on my laptop (1280x768) and it had issues but the latest drivers and the DH mobility modder worked wonders in conjunction with changing the compatibility settings.
Next I installed it on my desktop with a 5:4 screen (1280x1024) and it worked fine out of the box. I recently upgraded my monitor to a 1920x1080 and it suddenly has the colour issues.
Force it to 256 colours, 640x480 and check the 'disable desktop composition' box. THOSE 3 SETTINGS worked for me.
Note that the other methods such as having the personalisation window open didn't work for me, and restarting explorer kills some of the icons in the notification area so I wanted to avoid that method.
If anyone can confirm/deny my theory about widescreen monitors, that'd be extremely helpful.
1. Right click the Starcraft icon -> Properties -> Compatibility tab 2. Check ALL the Settings, but do NOT check Compatibility Mode 3. When you are ready to play, right click your desktop and click “Screen Resolution”. Leave this window open. Now launch Starcraft! 4.leave the Screen Res window open while you play and you’re golden.
I dont think you need a plugin for this.. you can change it yourself if needed: 1. Launch SC (normal or with iccup launcher) 2. alt tab into windows, run taskmgr.exe AS ADMIN 3. locate starcraft.exe in your process list, right click on it and select 'set affinity' 4. adjust the checkboxes so that only CPU0 is checked 5. click ok... you're done, go back in BW and enjoy.

Here are the things I did to fix my Windows 7 graphics glitch issues; I had the same problem:
1. UNCHECK the "Enable Color Cycling" box in the Video options on the in-game menu. 2. Make the registry changes as specified in this thread.
You can also try running the game with the "Screen Resolution" options window open on your desktop...apparently it worked for some people that were having graphical glitches.

This is what I used when I was having problems, it involves editing the registry key. Copy the following text and save it to a file name such as “StarCraft.reg“. After you save, double-click the file and it should add the entries. It works both for 32-Bit and 64-Bit.

I know how to fix for windows 7... First, you open task manager (search it in start menu) got to the processes tab find "explorer.exe" kill it ( end process ) NOTE: the taskbar and shortcuts WILL DISAPPEAR then go back to previous tab click new task then browse for your bw directory run your bw and your problems will be gone

I had a problem with the colors in BW in Win 7 too. But I just used Chaos Launcher and Windowed Mode and everything was (and is) fine. I dont know if you can get it to not have the color problem in fullscreen mode. But if you can play with it in windowed mode it will fix all the color issues.

I have that SAME problem! A fix would be greatly appreciated. It makes ladder on Fish SO difficult since I have to move my cursor up and down hoping that the ladder points show ;_;. The only fix that I've come up with is using w-mode, but I don't like this fix, since it makes my mouse really... sluggish. I forgot who made the suggestion, but someone suggested to have the screen rest the same as broodwar's so that you can modify the border of the w-mode, and that works great, except for the fact that the mouse is really slugging, and choppy. A fix for this would be amazing, or for the rank problem :D
If you're talking about the .reg file blizzard released to fix colors with windows 7 no it's doesnt solve this blank rank issue, i really wonder if there's a way to fix it really, it's very annoying :/

what if you want to use stuff like Iccup launcher for obvious reasons?
@One and only KrasH You have to leave the Screen Resolution window open AND run sc as admin, I rather do what I said @Roflhaxx Go suggest to ICCup that they're launcher should run SC in DirectDraw mode. Alternatively you can do what I said above, open Chaoslauncher(which should include ICCup's antihack) and on the icon tray, right click on chaoslauncher and click "Attach to ICCup 1.16.1" There you go, the ICCup's antihack is loaded. I've already asked MasterOfChaos to make an edit for Chaoslauncher to make SC use DirectDraw mode however it doesn't seem like he's going to do it(anytime soon)
Idk works perfectly fine for me, but i suggest you mess around with aero settings and visual settings Control panel, System and security, System Click on advanced system settings on the left Click "settings" button under "performance Change some of those or mess around. Thats about all ive done on this clean install of windows 7, and it works fine i guess for me.

Too bad can't fix the icons missing when using a launcher with BW. What I did however, is make custom resolution in my Ati GPU settings and switch to that resolution when playing BW. The resolution of BW in windowed mode is 650 x 517. Thus I set a custom resolution based on this guide(for Ati users, I think Nvidia has their own method) http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1605511
Move the BW window around to fit screen, and there. Fullscreen BW with icons
