Maybe other people have had better luck than me, however, with my experience with netgear routers (and i mean strictly their routers, the switches are sexbombs), is that no matter how hard you try to port forward (and i'm a software developer, this stuff is engrained in my head so i'm not overlooking anything, trust me), StarCraft just doesn't fucking work. It's almost as if the router is opening the port but still doing something to stop it from completely working. Not only that, but the firmware is RIDDLED with spelling mistakes. Quality for the win? I just hate netgear, it can suck my balls and suck them again and more.

If you have a dd-wrt based router you can get instructions here http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=54793
so i tried everything like that. Resetting router, trying again etc, not working still. Getting "Waiting for response from battle.net". Even WoW lags now. Put everything back now, works as before, execpt msn wont start for some wierd reason.

I have kind of the same problem too. I can play / host any game, with any number of players, but when my roommate tries to join the game it lags horribly until one of us leave. I already tried the DWORD Game data port file trick, but it didn't change anything. I use a Linksys router. Does anyone have a solution for me? Thanks

I think it stands for DeMilitarized Zone its a firewall config for LANs. By removing it all firewall protection would be gone. I would use only if necessary.

I might have the same problem as you, ThePhan2m. Right now I am getting internet through Nextgentel and have a speedtouch (don't remember the exact model) DSL modem/router. Even if I have the right port forward info in it, it will still give me problems in games with more than one opponent. The configuration thing for it is really simple and DMZ isn't an option. Looking through some forums online, I have found that it is a common problem that speedtouch, nextgentel and starcraft don't work well together. If you are getting internet through nextgentel and got the router through them, you might try calling their helpline and maybe arrange for them to send you a different brand router/modem. And try not to go too deeply into why, because they probably won't understand you.
Just be sure that you have tried it with the correct port forward configuration or with your computer in DMZ first or if your have a separate modem and router that you just plug your computer into the modem.
Right now I use VPN through my university to get around the problem.

Only use DMZ if you have a softwarefirewall on your computer. Because it disables the firewall features of the router.

So you set up a static IP and forwarded ports to that IP and it still wont work?

if you have tried rebooting router, loading defaults, upgrading firmware etc and still no luck, just connect direct to your modem when u need to play SC and get another router if u need it.

When it's not about port forwarding, it's usually a NAT problem i.e. your router is not doing NAT properly (wikipedia it if you want more info).
Most router have a nat loopback functionality that you can use through telnet. Something like you run "cmd" then telnet ipaddressofrouter You'll be ask for ID / pass then for mine it's something like: :ip config natloopback=enabled
Seems like the speedtouch are really crap at that kind of things. Hope that'll help

So how exactly to you enable NAT loopback functionality?
I typed in "telnet 192.168.1.1" and it told me it was not a valid internal or external command.

I'm not a router guru I just know enough to make mine work but still, trying to help: -what's your router? (brand, model) -are you sure you're routeur ip is 192.168.1.1 ?
On my router (a speedtouch 780 boxed by some ISP) I can: - Start button then "run..." in windows - Type in "cmd" and execute, a black window should open - There you type "telnet ipaddress of router" (for me: telnet 192.168.1.254) - It asks for id / pass (if you havent touch anything that should be administrator/administrator) - Then ":ipconfig natloopback=enabled" (you can try out the help functions to find the nat one... depend of the brand / model) - Then you save ":saveall" and "exit" - Reboot router and you're ready to go (you still need forward rules btw)
There are a few other commands that can help if this is not enough.
Some router don't accept telnet unfortunately (some DLink....), i'm afraid there's not much you can do about it (the only last chance solutions are trying to use fix IP and if your router has starcraft preset rules not using them but creating a new rule manually OR using DMZ i.e. you've got you're real IP address directly (but you can't have more than one comp on the internet at a time...))

Mine is a Netgear WPN824v2
So I opened up the command window, typed in "telnet 192.168.1.1" but it doesn't ask me for a id/password. If I put in a colon, it just moves to the next line. I'm 99% sure that 192.168.1.1 is my router IP. I use that to configure my portforward settings.

There's why my cmd window looks like.
