February 2
UrASofty fell out of grand prize contention with the loss of Hwasin. He did manage to get all seven other predictions correct though, a feat shared only by Alethios who predicted July to defeat UpMagic. 11 Others managed to get six out of eight predictions correct.
On the other end of the spectrum, everyone at least managed to get one correct pick, so no one's bracket was a complete zero. Only one person missed as many as seven, who I won't call out directly.
Here are your current top contenders for the mensrea No-Prize: 7pts UrASofty 7pts Alethios 6pts AceVentura 6pts Camlito 6pts CrAwLinG[F2F] 6pts Enrique 6pts iloveHieu 6pts Jonoman92 6pts melch 6pts Motiva 6pts Naib 6pts Pressure 6pts Seraphim

The first half of the Round of Sixteen has been decided. With the upset of Sea's loss, only twenty brackets were left in contention for the grand prize. When Kal won, the correct brackets were reduced down to eleven. Jangbi's win only eliminated three more participants. However, after the completion of the fourth game, only one brackets remains.
UrASofty correctly predicted Light, Kal, JangBi and UpMagic to advance out of the round of sixteen. He will be cheering on Jaedong, Hwasin, Nada and Mind to advance on February 2nd.
Sixteen others managed to guess three out of four correct choices. While twenty-two of you scored a whopping zero points from the first four matches. Four out of four matches turned out to be upsets as less than half of you correctly predicted any one outcome.
I'll be back to update on February 2nd to see if UrASofty is still in contention to take my money. I will also post everyone's scores up to that point and have a look at the standings for the mensrea No-Prize.
January 24
Submissions will no longer be accepted. There are 122 people with brackets submitted for the contest.
Of the 122 Entrants, nearly half (60) predicted Jaedong to be the GomTV S4 MSL Champion. Anytime had the second most with 16.
110 of you picked Jaedong to beat Luxury in the Round of 16, the largest range of any of the eight matchups.
Hwasin and Flash was the closest of the Round of 16 matchups with 58-64 in favor of Flash.
Orion was the only player no one predicted to be the champion. Shine, Jangbi and Luxury were each picked only once.
January 22
The Rules:
Edit this nicely made bracket (thanks pachi!), put it on an image hosting site, and PM it to me before the MSL Ro16 Week1 this Thursday (Jan 24). I am only considering ones I get via PM, so even if you post it here, you must PM your official entry to me. Each person only gets one entry, and once I get your bracket via PM your entry is final.
If someone gets the bracket completely right, you will win $100. This doesn't happen often (actually nobody has ever gotten one entirely right), so kudos to you if you make it happen. In the event of a tie, tiebreaker rules will be added if and when they need to be applied. After the Round of Sixteen I will determine whether or not a tie is possible and determine where to go from there.
Thanks to Hot_Bid for the format from last season.
I will also be participating to defend my $100. This is my bracket: + Show Spoiler +
PLEASE BE SURE TO SEND VIA PM. I will not count those posted only in the thread
The most accurate bracket will be determined this way: Ro16 - 1 point Ro8 - 2 points Semis - 4 points Finals - 8 points
The most accurate will get fame, fortune and women (or men) and the extremely coveted mensrea No-Prize.

None taken. I'm pretty sure it is absurd, but there are likely going to be upsets somewhere. There are players I predicted to lose that I would rather win.
I do stand by my bracket though. I like it and will not be convinced that it should have been different.

Ok lets go through this step by step.
Logic dictates that Jaedong is the best player in this grouping and therefore he should take the entire thing. Therefore he won't... not unless he already won an MSL. We must apply the pure reason of insanity to clearly visualize this bracket.
There needs to be a less than quality player going into the round of 8 (the 910 rule) and an old favorite that doesn't quite make it.
Orion covers the 910 rule. I think he is half decent but I dont think he is top 8 in this grouping. Anytime will probably cover the old favorite rule.
That leaves the Jaedong upset to luxury flash or hwasin. Logic says Luxury is the most likely therefore inevitably it will be hwasin.
Hwasin will fill the up down let down role this season filled in the past by Savior, Nal_ra etc. Basically he will look like he has a shot and then dump out in the round of 4.
Mind isn't expect to win therefore he will take the title for a 2nd time.
Therefore it is all too clear
Champ: Mind
Final: July Mind
Round of 4: Mind Hwasin July Kwanro
Round of 8: Jaedong Hwasin Light Kwanro Anytime Mind Orion July
If I was using logic though I would go with Last Romantics bracket but have Orion over Jangbi and Mind over Shine
|
Who is Pachi? Is he a graphic designer by trade, or something? It seems like he's always making graphics for TL, and they're always awesome.

kind of random, but what's the possibility of getting this thing right? I assume it's: (1/16)(1/8)(1/4)(1/2) = 1/1024 yes?

I don't really care who wins just as long as the finals is Sea vs. Jaedong.

I usually put a lot of effort into these things. And usually fail horribly. No-effort ftw:

Ah, one flaw in your logic diggity You forgot to factor in the possibility of a 'transfer process' ala Stout MSL and YATGK MSL which must mean that Nada must lose in the final

Funny as hell, but what say you about the chances of Kal? According to your logic, and I apologize for asking this because you have presented your thoughts in a very clear manner, shouldn't Kal be the upset winner?
I don't know why I'm so personally drawn to Kal. I don't know what he looks like, I can barely spell his name, yet I'm banking on him to make the finals. Yeesh, destiny it seems to me.

Well, using the assumption that each player has a 50% chance of winning each match, which isn't strictly accurate but is the way such things are usually calculated, and they way you appear to be trying to do it, it's actually 1 / ((2^8)(2^4)(2^2)(2^1)) = 1 / 2^15 = 1/32768.

Two people were 8/8, but of course that would change if every match didn't go to the winner of game one. There will be eliminations tonight and we shall see how many remain after the first half of the Round of 16.

Oh my why did i vote july... damnit.

WARNING Maths here:
For the first four choices the total possible permutations are 2^4 which is 16.
Out of 122 Team Liquid members only ONE gets the first four. If you gave the draw to 122 monkeys and asked them to fill it in (obviously you'd have to give them a quick MSpaint lesson first) about 8 would get the first four right.
Therefore TeamLiquid < + Show Spoiler +
Btw the chance of anyone getting the full table right is 1 in 131,072. Semioldguy knows he can play this game for a Loooooooong time
|
United States7488 Posts
That's, of course, assuming 50/50 chances for every match which isn't always the case.
Yes, it's extremely unlikely, but I wouldn't mind if someone could get one right. I hope it happens someday, that'd be amazing. Or even to just get the first round right would be a first.
Almost any other outcome for the night's games would have produced more correct brackets. There was at least one bracket for each of the sixteen possible combinations for the first night.
