Hey everyone, we just released a new update to ShieldBattery, our biggest one yet! There's a lot of stuff that we added since our last update, most notably 3v3 matchmaking (and other matchmaking modes) along with multi-queue.
Some of the other features we also added: - New matchmaker - Revamped netcode - Player reporting - Customizing in-game colors, along with the colorblind mode (this one's for you Ret :d) - New replays library - Custom user avatars - Twitch integration - And much more!

I remember being invited to try the beta years ago. I didn't know SB is alive all this time

also for SC2 guys, the center mouse button scroll speed bug got fixed as well :D

Awesome job as always! You guys are way underappreciated.
We would just* need to lure the players over to SB, and we could have a second Canaan.
(* +first class Linux support)

few pics of some of the new settings
new middle mouse button drag speed option
new color options under gameplay:
theres some preset options or u can set ur own custom colors (or use old legacy bw colors)

I can see custom colors causing communication issues actually. How did you guys decide the default colors? All players can use default colors via shift-tab?
|
ppl communicate via pings + clock in BW, not colors (go 12, go 3, go 5 etc.)
for colors u can keep the default BW colors (shift+tab = all oppos are red), lotsa ppl are used to shift tabbing to change colors (on classic BW) thats why players dont communicate via colors much, some shift+tab and others dont etc.

I've used colors to communicate something almost every team game I've played (until Remastered came with 50 shades of green/yellow) I don't hink I'm an outlier in that regard. Depending on the situation it can be easier to mention the color, also useful when playing with casuals imo. If you're playing with Koreans then no.
Anyway, just sharing my thoughts. If everyone will customize than it's def better to adapt and forgo mentioning colors. I'm still curious how the colors were decided, since it had been one of my wishes and shared some input on it years ago.

The custom colors only show up if you use one of the color override modes (shift+tab ingame, which will toggle you through minimap-only or applying them to everything). So if you want to use these overrides, you can still shift+tab back to the original colors if need be.
Longer term (not *that* much longer now, I think) I'd also like to have a better ping system ingame so communicating basic things can be done in an easier way (that would automatically convert player colors + language to match what each user's preferences are)

Thanks for sharing these pics, they really help elevate how awesome this release is
Any chance someone can share a screenshot of the new /netstat display ingame?
Revamped Netcode: ShieldBattery now supports lower latency than Battle.net for matches that can handle it
Im curious about this. IIRC the game naturally always has a 2 turn buffer? If SB is able to lower this buffer to 1 turn (where possible), does this mean the SB netcode has an even shorter turn buffer than playing on LAN?

tbh fixing the middle mouse scroll wheel bug in BW is a big QoL boost to attract more ppl into the game, it's a very common mechanic that a lot of high level players use in SC2 for example or even other games
problem is in BW.. the ppl who are still playing this game are people who played back in the 2000s, there was no mouse wheel so its not a mechanic that anyone even bothers thinking about, probably why it's never talked about in the BW scene xd, no one uses it
but anyways tec27 was able to fix the issue and even add speed adjustments too, btw this middle mouse wheel was already in the game when SCR was released, it was just bugged for some reason, if u try it ingame on bnet ull see that when u hold ur mouse button wheel down and move ur mouse it'll move super fast, thats a bug
also i played a game vs pc and the lat was:
62 ms, the fastest i saw before on SB was 104 ms, i thought 104 ms = tr24?

hopefully we'll see an uptick in server usage with the 3v3 bgh matchmaking

Hopefully this lower latency does not become standard, or the foreigner population will get even more separated from Koreans ...
I am sure its an impressive technical feat either way.

The ultimate goal will be a 0-turn buffer. Theoretically it should be doable, it's just a more intermediate-term goal.

hows the ping situation, if say i'm trying to use this while living in asia?
|
right now theres a small bug with the latency (devs already fixed afaik but they didnt release the update yet), it'll be noticeable in 1v1 and 2v2 games but for bgh the ping is still much better than on bnet (overall the ping is always better on sb than bnet, especially for eu/na/latam)
thats for games outside of asia tho, depending on where you live the lat probably gonna be much better for SE asia etc. on bnet vs kors
trade off is theres no ladder team games so youre just playing pub games, depends on what u want, u can try it out and see if the lat is playable enough but it could be hard if you're in Asia playing vs Latam/EU/NA etc.
thats just info based on my 1st hand experience of playing games vs ppl from diff regions, i dunno the routing/server details tho (gotta ask main devs), btw if you wanna sync up with other ppl to find solo q bgh games quicker join channel #TheBGH on SB
