He should def dual stream on SOOP, then he can get picked up by a university or at the least get some spon games. Those uni guys are always looking to create new exciting content. A high skilled white guy in Korea with online attitude could create hype for sure.
I hope he makes it, if not he still adds a cool story to impose with in the retirement home.
Good luck, enjoy yourself out there! As someone who traveled to Korea in 2019, the hardest part was probably the long ass flight which was..15 hours? Only so many movies you can watch to kill time, lol

Why don't you want to be your best self anymore. Should always explore that avenue and find out how good you can get at anything. Don't get old and soft.
Crazy to think about how much progress Gypsy has made as a player in the past ~10 years. A lot of effort invested for sure. Low key inspirational; the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, the second-best time is today.

Lol. If you try to achieve the highest possible level, you need lots of frustration tolerance in general and I don't think the average streamer has well developed self-regulation to combat it, so I'm not surprised.

Yeah, I agree. His attitude prevents him from even having a chance, like many foreigners before him. I hope he's able to take something else from his visit to Korea with him, whatever that may be.
There was also this twitch-stream, where he dissed a chatter for pointing out that Koreans are just way ahead of foreigners, and that Gypsy should keep his expectations in check. How did Gypsy react? He mocked the dude, he wouldn't just go there for Broodwar (what else? Sex tourist?), but it still was his primary goal, since the good oppponents were in Korea, lower latency, etc. he bullied the guy who was well-meaning and realistic so hard. And now look where we are.
Gypsy sucks against no-name Koreans. I can't feel but cheer for him to fail. Self-righteous bitch.
What's your problem? I'm perfectly chill. I'm just saying if you donate to a self-righteous loser like Gypsy you're a retard. Feel offended? Call the police.
I'm happy if he fails and lands dead in a ditch because his true reason to go to Korea was because he thoughy them bitches were easy, while selling his donators the pro-gamer bullshit and mocking the one reasonable, friendly critic like he was a subhuman, when the self-absorbed subhuman is Gypsy.

lol, for Zerg, yes.
But as far as I understand, Jinjin is actually Korean and has some understanding of the BW scene over there, unlike most of the other tl-retards, so I'm actually interested in his opinion.
Let me look for Gypsy's video, which he uploaded to his own yt-channel, where he mocks a sensible viewer, who is obviously not ill-intenioned, for half an hour or so, when it's absolutely obvious what the viewer tries to convey? And lo and behold, the viewer was right, big surprise, Gypsy ragequits against random Zergs, no gg, it's the game, not him. Loser behaviour.
And he even deleted the video in question. I watched it. Gypsy is an asshole, and I wish him the worst. If that counts as angry, ok. So what? At least I didn't travel to Korea to fuck bitches while pretending to trying to become better at Broodwar.

Do you question the morality of every artist in every show/movie/song you've ever watched/heard?
Keep in mind, raging on stream is like half of the entertainment. Artosis has made many many dollars acting like a baby because the people enjoy it.
Yeah, amusement and entertainment is all that counts. Decency, values, humility, kindness, righteousness – all worthless, unless it entertains. Also explains Artosis' success. Complete loser, awful player, ugly as shit, physically as well as mentally, only bigger losers are his twitch watchers/subs and his wife. And God help his children.

lol, as much as I don't think that rage quit and "zerg imba" (lmao) gets him anywhere, it can be understandable. I hope he gets his mindset in check although I think that should have been something to have set before the trip. Anyhow, I watched 12 minutes of the video and he seems pretty reasonable. He is not really mocking the guy, the guy is just extremely bad at bringing his point across. After 12 minutes I'm not sure what they are trying to say. Either it comes later or you are just projecting what you think into their messages. The only ones mocking the chatter are the other chatters. Some assholes in there for sure. I think I would have reacted in a similar manner as Gypsy, just worded a bit differently maybe to get to the point.

Calling people subhuman and an anti-Semite. Do you by any chance vote for AfD as well? ;-)
I'd welcome an honest discussion, I'm a flawed human as well after all, and debates are a way to grow. But I suspect it's easier to ban me than to point out where I'm wrong or how one could interpret things differently than I do.

Real shit. I remember sweating as much while losing a 40 minute 1v1 BW grindfest as I did from playing a 90 minute footie match. From the pits to the belt. That stress and anxiety man, shit has you on the edge of your seat, then when the realization that you're not gonna win and you spent 40 minutes sweating and swearing just to lose ladder points dawns on you and you have to stop yourself from punching a fucking hole through your monitor.
See the problem when you go to the gym is that you spend a lot of time watching yourself in the mirror. That doesn't help in keeping your ego in check for sure.

I'd watch his stream/FPVODs too. His mechanics are very crisp and easily the best for a foreigner imo (non Chinese or Korean). Precise and minimal mouse movement, everything stays super close to the middle of his screen so well.
Rage is why we play broodwar. Real emotions every time! Nothing beats that stupid worker floating behind the mineral patches and getting stuck there forever.

He is but you can't save VODs on twitch in korea for some reason. His youtube channel live section has all the VODs.
The reason is that Twitch basically left Korea as a company. You can still stream, but that's basically it. No subscribers, no bits, no ads, no way to monetise. Koreans can't watch twitch clips (even from other countries), you can't save your VODs, and probably more stuff that's not available anymore since they moved out of Korea.

While gypsy doesn't articulate solid arguments against General Grievous, his point is kind of clear. But neither does Grievous bring up good points, or articulate them well enough to be perceived as good points. But honestly Gypsy responded rather calm and did give Grievous room to talk. Two years ago Gypsy would just rage and go on a tantrum if a chatter like that appeared. Gypsy has genuinely improved his behavior a bunch. I really don't like him, but I will give him that.

Imagine you occasionally playing football matches with your mates in neighborhood. There are about 100 people in your area. And you know that there is another neighborhood 100 miles away with 10000 people which is very competitive. And you have opportunity to move there and hang with them and learn something new. Would you go or stay in your neighborhood until you have 100% ball control ?

Didnt Nyoken already do this? And Idra? Even Artosis did it. Gypsy is not the first. But it is a cool initiative for sure.
Korea is definutely the environment within which one can most likely grow the most. But I do think he will need a teacher. And he will need to learn more korean.

Idra is close one, but it was in times of different starcraft, so It doesn't count. Totally different game now. Nyoken and Artosis are commentators and retired from real competitive gaming long time ago.

Thats assuming youve already kinda outgrown your current playfield. Is that the case? His latest result was RO16 last place in BSL. Kinda hard to find more results since his liquipedia doesnt show much except for 1-2 tournaments a year.
Just switching into a more competitive pool of player might just result in drowning

Gypsy isn't stupid. It's more of a personal challenge. I am 100% certain he has no delusions with regards to competing consistently well against even the 3rd tier of Korean players (Mihu's level even tho not Kor).

Agreed. If you want to outgrow your competition, you don't stay in the environment you are competing in, you learn from the best and by competing against the best. Even if Gypsy is the worst competitive player in Korea (unlikely), he will grow faster in Korea provided he has the right mindset and connections. There are few people who can teach you how to be better than they ever were in a sport, that takes a different skill set. So, the most stable way is to compete and work with players much better than you and bridge the gap faster that way. At least in my opinion and experience across multiple disciplines.
To make a potentially shitty analogy, marathons have pace makers. The pace maker for a senior citizens event will move slower than a pace maker for a competitive qualifier marathon. If you want to start growing to a solid pace, you will want to train and measure yourself against the more difficult pace maker than the geriatric one. We already have evidence of this from aforementioned examples like Assem, IdrA (despite that one F91 series lmao), etc.

I always wonder what happened to Artosis. Before sc2 he made weekly bw news which were genuinly intuiging, he used to be a way better caster than nowdays is, he used to be a nicer person. Streaming obviously has a part to play, but it isn't the answer for all the questions.

Artosis and Tasteless make $12,000 monthly on their ASL Patreon. Including months where there are no ASLs. Who knows how much he makes playing angry streamer.
Being an nerdy highly technical caster and being nice on will not land you that. Especially if you have 4 kids.

Idk for his stream because i don't care for it ,or any foreign stream tbh, i don't have time to watch much outside proleague once in a while and ASL, but i met him at the Montreal LAN again after like 8yrs not seeing him irl and he was super nice as always. I didn't notice any difference from the times over the last 2 decades we met at various events, besides being a bit older (and a parent ^^). Still the same passion for the game and general friendly but frank demeanor offline, as most old school folks tend to be.

So is posting online in general IMO. It might be one side of us magnified from 2% in real life to 80% of our personality online. Especially given the inherent competitive nature and stress of this game, or the relative anonymity of this forum, for example. Speaking from personal experience 😂 I am not in person as I am online, especially not now as an adult and not a kid 18 years ago (thankfully, for the most part).
Being in Korea doesn't matter nowadays since the ladder is already here to make you play against good players regardless where you live, plus we already have access to pro kor replays/vod. Korea is not anymore that blackbox it used to be for so long. The most important is to have someone who has the level you want to reach to give you the required knowledge. So if Gypsy hopes to be pro level, he needs a pro to mentor him, plain and simple. Or else it might take centuries, or not happen at all.

You get matches with more koreans being in Korea. Matchmaking prioritizes location + mmr. You also get TR 24 Low, which is also a great to play in and pushes you to a physical mechanical limit.
But ultimately you do need a mentor in this day and age, or at least access to the korean language guides and knowledge. Decision making ultimately sets players apart. Having access to the korean language allows you to easily get to the reasons behind a decision, or an optimization.

I'm genuinely worried about him. At first he did well, now he looks incredibly unhealthy and his mental state is a mess. Watching his stream is emotionally disturbing and unlike Artosis this doesn't seem to be an act. And I doubt the 200 bucks he will make from that will improve his situation. He really needs to face reality on what he is doing and adjust his expectations of himself.
I watch his VODs almost every day, and like everyone else, he plays well some days and not as well on others. I hope he has the mindset that "you win, you earn; you lose, you learn" It's hard to stay focused after many losses in a row, I understand him. Wishing him all the best in South Korea!

1 month of korea is better than expensive therapy to cure your narcissistic delusions though. So it's actually a good deal.
He stopped being halu like two years ago. I used to dislike him tremendously for his halu and toxic behavior. But he seems to have come down from that high horse halu mindset and seems more serious and down to earth. I dunno bout any of this, but big Gyp is hands-down the best trashtalker, and his casts with Nyoken or in the NASL a while back were my absolute most fav. part of all English casting (which I've been religiously following over the last 7-8 yrs...)
Last time I checked his stream he was hitting his face Gosh. That reminds me grinding fishserver I swear. Kor ladder is here to remind us we are all shit. Once we understood and integrated that, that is the time the change can occur. The ego is the biggest enemy. Good luck to him.

does he still stream? would love to watch him grind kr and see how he's doing.
Would you have played qualifiers if it wasn't for the fear of judgement of others (and yourself)?
You don't have to answer, you've made the right decision in that moment, but do I believe you missed out even when it's likely you would have been beaten in the first round. I believe sometimes it's okay to go for the experience instead of obtaining the the highest possible result that strokes your ego and pleases your audience. Dewalt went, just like you he also risked losing face when losing again in the first round, but not to his real fans nor all of the people who would only know he played qualifiers if he had qualified.
Like you mentioned: people will talk shit, so let 'em talk. You could have said: "I was there." And maybe "I even won a game." Now you're saying: "I wasn't there, because I felt too afraid." + Show Spoiler +
and you even made this video about it apologizing like a weakling. LMAO YOU !@#$ING LOSER /s
Good luck on your journey, may you get wiser and happier! And thanks for sharing it with all of us.
Nobody's really judging him. The BW community is just a handful of people on Twitch and YouTube and none of those who watch regularly play at a halfway decent level to have any idea of how difficult the task is. Those who do play at a halfway decent level respect his grind.
The guy's alone in a country where he doesn't speak the language and he's immersed 24/7 in an extremely hardcore video game, alone, without friends, with no one to really talk to... It's normal that his mental state is deteriorating.
Most of those judging him wouldn't last three days in his situation.
The guy is doing what he wants to do with his time and his life, the rest are doing what they were told they had to do, i respect that shit.
vlog-kind videos now unavailable. He streams from his room, no longer from pc bang. He mentioned wanting to try a different approach, but I did not pick up the details. Perhaps he moved to a different apartment or city?

He briefely mentioned meeting with some of the starcraft people/foreigners living there outside his streams. Since he streams for ~4-6 hours a day there's a decent amount of time for unwinding away from the screen (it's a vacation after all)
There's 4-5 completely different people inside of him and he's a total chameleon. At first I thought bipolar? Something else?
But no. He is just lazy and a con artist.
Who does he think he's fooling? Quite a few people, it would seem. I feel sorry for his mother who probably believed his "I'm working on a thesis for 5 years, I swear!" story. Jk mom I'm actually a closet hardcore starcraft streamer living a double life.
What a wasted opportunity for someone to go to Korea. 3-4 hours of practice a day is a joke. He gets a few donations then "goes out" at night. Of course the hard-working players are gonna eat him alive. Dewalt etc. and many koreans are raising their own families and they still run circles around him.
But after his little tantrums and some "lighthearted" bullying/abuse of a handful of (quite loyal, well-intentioned and good-natured) viewers, he's always able to play the victim and blame society or capitalism or his circumstances or whatever. After he mic-drops an eloquent dissertation explaining why it's all post-modernism's fault to his poor benighted viewers, he'll quickly revert to feigning ignorance and pretending he doesn't know any better.
Even if you donate or sub prepare to get bullied out of his stream. Did you ask a simple question? Maybe you're new to the game or community? Jokes on you! He'll throw you under the bus to make himself appear edgy and cool in front of the 5-10 viewers he's actually friends with. Try coming back later when they aren't around if you're expecting basic decency or to be treated with respect.
P.S. he hates money (or at least hates working for it...yeah no crap, you and everyone else on this planet, get in line man) but please buy him a gaming laptop (but not before he disparages you for working).
He doesnt seem to have any integrity at all. It makes me sick.
People can go as far as they want to in life acting this way. But sooner or later they get exactly what they deserve. It's really such a shame because he has so much potential.
He became a top foreigner. He always dreamt of going to Korea and he went. He's sharing his experience with a community full of dudes who would have liked to excell in BW and go to Korea just like him.
If he had become an upstanding citizen with a master's degree and lame ass meaningless office job, sure, he could also have gone to Korea just as well. But then he would also have been just another nobody you would never hear of.

Honestly, I think theres at least little missed opportunity not advertising himself as much to Koreans. His soop and YouTube stream titles could do a lot more to advertise/stand out that he is at least in korea (to koreans). There has been 0 effort to separate himself from his soop and yt stream titles from other foreigners there, for example, that Vietnamese s rank guy.
Also spon scene isnt what it was back in say 2016 or 2017. All the focus has really been diverted to proleague system and sc uni for while now, and just glancing at site like eloboard can tell you how less of activity/volume there is on spon side. So making more effort to stand out would have helped way more. Expecting a natural spon games cycle to spawn out is bit unrealistic without outside help, and titles would have at least attracted viewers
He also could have taken account of how much impact being in foreign country will have on him mentally. Unfamiliar environment and food is huge deal even for casual travellers and expecting to be on top shape and improving on top of that is huge ask.

I think the wasted opportunity is not even trying to attend the qualifier, which I think a lot of people had that expectation when he announced he was going to Korea. Even if he lost in the first round, I think the minimum was giving it a try. When else is he going to get an opportunity like this again?
I won't argue against any of those, also posted about it, but as I understand it: his main goal was going to Korea, playing LAN lat vs much a better pool of players and sniffing Korean culture and it's what he's doing.
I was simply showing the hater another perspective.
Me the perspective I see is that he advertised to everyone that he is going to ASL qualifier "I love starcraft blablabla" getting plenty of support, and yet, did not participate to ASL qualifier lol. Wtf is this weak shit.
Not playing in the qualifiers is an odd choice. Yes, he would get destroyed, likely very early, but so do other foreigners and most Koreans who try, nobody other than people who hate him anyway would think less of him. Even familiarizing himself with the process might've been good for later. I don't know, I wish him the best, if he grinds like crazy and improves that's great, but he wasn't on the level of the top BSL/Chinese players to being with (who do participate in ASL qualifiers), so that's gonna be difficult.
I think Gypsy has shifted his focus after talking with some local english speaking pros. He is lacking theory and plays too much on intuition. Intuition is great but you got to follow the decision making flowcharts and have a deeper understanding to progress beyond a certain point. His mechanics are honestly already in a good enough place. Something as simple as zerg lair timing can already result in having to folllow 5 different decision making flowcharts. Saw him do some sub-optimal decision making in regards to lair timing in a few of his TvZs.

Is there any where I can see the SPON-games and the vs. Pro games that Gyp is talking about?

Ive seen a lot of gypsy vs pros and top amateurs on CWAL but its almost all losses, maybe a handfull of wins.
Gypsy is a pretty known quantity. It's weird that people seek out the Gypsy stream, watch it, and are surprised when he delivers Gypsy content. You don't have to like it, but you also don't have to interact with it at all.
The stuff about Nemu is pretty damn hilarious and spot on. I remember looking at his CWAL when he was bragging about his MMR and I saw something like 20 leavers out of 50 games. He lags more than every other A/S rank European player.

Really weird that people seek out a stream of a foreigner going to Korea (that they have not watched before) only to then realize that he is mentally under age... no offence (Gyp words).

I think he is referring to the 90% some ladder players, not select few. I have a similar impression, that European ladder in large is trash. You can never get any good playing EU ladder not just because the players lack skill but mainly because of how they choose to play. You only get to play against semi all-ins or pure all-ins and you either block their cheesy attempts and the game is instantly over or you occasionally slip up and they get a win. Games don't go any deeper than that. It's one of the reasons i paid for VPN not just to play "Better" players but to get away from those type of dumb games.

Why only Europe player base? it's the same observation to me across all servers except Korea and for a long time already. An other thing is that beyond 2000mmr, you are always matching with the same players. Kor server makes it a good playground because you can match players that have near the same level as you which is better when seeking to improve and makes the game much more enjoyable. Now that we can get a decent ping to Korea with VPN, I don't think I'll ever return on foreign ladder. If that wasn't for that, I would have probably quit playing eventually.

While I might agree with it I still reflect that...
- Artosis reaches pretty much the same MMR from both Korea/Canada (after years of playing). Why has he not blown up to 2500 after the change of environment? - Let's say that the answer to above (and the reason why the top European players like Bonyth, eOnzerg, Sziky etc.) is that they play through a VPN - then why did Gyp. have to go to Korea and could just not do the same? I do not at all deny that TR24/low practice in Korea has massive benefits. But flying half way across the world just to sit in an Airbnb and play just to get MMR on a ladder, not even trying to attend the ASL qualifier... while acting like a man-child... Thats... rough...
NOTE! eOnzerg both played and took a picture with Flash on his ASL qualifier try - respect.

I think ladder MMR doesn't always represent skill very accurately in BW right now between the latency/mirror match leavers, very low player count, and frequent smurfing. It fundamentally has an element of inaccuracy since it averages the results of 3 different match ups. It can also get detached from your "true level" by cheesing a lot. I dunno, I just see a lot of people with similar MMR that don't look similarly skilled to me.

When i went to Korea i was really really good. i Won the biggest tournaments at the time. BSL and Pro series. My MMR was 2500 and that was the MMR i reached constantly in Korea. Obviously i been always playing with vpn so while the experience in Korea with TR24 helped with muta micro and more quality practise ( Sponsored games ) latency will not magically make you a better player. The chance of the struggles you are having with TR 16 low latency are most likely the same you will have with TR24.
But some of you need to realized that going to Korea by yourself to dedicate to play starcraft as a foreigner is far from ideal. Language barrier is really hard. Culture Shock. When i was in Korea i was always in disbelief that almost every city i visited will have the same Buildings. The same shops in the same order etc. After 2 months there i started to feel like i was living in a Simulation. So while you are focused on trying to improve your game. There are many aspects outside of it that are relevant. For example in Korea most of the places i visited the mattress was almost like sleeping in a table. Except one very last hotel that Artosis reserved for us that it was the best sleep i got in 3 months there. You cant really talk to anyone if they dont speak english. I was kicked from a taxi for no having the adress in hangul. sure thats on me but i was expecting a little bit of help instead of just someone saying. KAAAAA that basically means GO. lol. ALways with the fear of eating something so spicy that will wake you up at 3 am with your ass onfire.
I have to be honest im a bit dissapointed that a foreigner decided to go to Korea to improve/ challenge himself and we got nothing but 8 pages trying to bring him down. As someone that was in that place not many people really get it.
Is also not fair to compare progress or anything cuz Gypsy right now is living in a different timeline. When i went to Korea ASL qualifiers were offline in PC bangs. I also got the opportunity to play in the ACS qualifiers to gather experience.
Gypsy ASL qualifiers now are online. So in my eyes he didnt really miss that offline perspective of seeing the progamers eye to eye etc. I dont know the reasons he didnt try but i imagine he just didnt feel prepared based on his practise and let it go.
Also like someone did mention early on. Spon games these days are more rare compared to 2019. I played a ton of those back then and it helped a lot to calm my nerves while playing progamers. I was so used to it that when i played FlaSh in the qualifiers i wasnt even nervous lol.
Also in USA and specially in the gaming communities. The word retarded is pretty common to use. Recently i can tell is a more sensitive word and i see people calling it the ''R'' word instead. But i doubt he is attacking a person with a real discapicity. I mean shit i feel like that GIf oh hommer simpson hiding in a bush cuz i also use that word sometimes..
As someone who went to KR/CN for a different game in 2019 right before the world went to shit, it was kinda nice to just go in with the goku mindset of "I just wanna fight strong guys"
So as a (sorta) outsider looking in it's a bit of a shame Gypsy didn't give ASL Qual a shot just for the in person experience alone but totally understandable. Wish him the best in his journey and hoping he gets some nice level ups in his play with the time spent there.

All of them f**k Gyp in his gaping hole... no pun intended.
While I might agree with it I still reflect that...

Thanks for sharing your experience and insights eOn. I would love to read a blog about your Korean escapades; if you haven't written one yet, hopefully one day you will 🙂

Thanks for sharing your experience eOn, I was an avid follower back then – like to think I watched most if not all streams.
I 100% agree and respect the extreme challenge of going there, pretty much alone - and in Gyps own words, more or less without a plan. That takes some courage for sure. Even though times were different, everyone that went either now or all the way back to the early 2000s deserve massive respect (incl. Gyp).
Subjectively I am not trying to bring anyone down - in Gyps case though I think he does it all by himself - talking about "gaping a**holes", "fu**ing retards", [insert person X]..."fu**ing su*k", "can go and f**k himself" etc. But I get it - it's childish and immature - stuff that I guess I am too “old” to understand. He probably does not give a damn but publicly I think he would benefit from cleaning up his act... a lot - if he want (more*) people to support him at all that is.
I guess the only thing I am guilty of is not understanding the objective here at all, to sit in an Airbnb, act like a being mentally underage, win and loose some rather pointless games, talk about SPON and pro-games which are either very rare or…? That’s why I asked if anyone could either collect, or link a few pro-games… Playing vs. them on TR24/low is at least some experience. Hell… I don’t know.

I really wish people would stop using that word. It's hateful and incredibly ableist.
I agree. However, I think that is one of Gyps' favorite words. It's incredibly childish and immature. But that is what he is (immature) I guess - so we can't hope for more.
I did not watch him at all before he went to Korea but I remember a "North American" stream when he more or less said that, and much more right in the face to DocHoliday. Hard to root for the guy...
I dunno, is it hateful and ableist when someone calls an umpire blind? I don't think gyp means anything by it.
I mean most don’t, just in 2026 it’s not really the done thing. As a human primarily formed in the 90s I mean plenty of ‘retard’ or ‘faggot’, ‘raped’ were thrown around casually with no particular discriminatory intent behind em.
But it’s not that hard to scrub from the auld vernacular like. I mean I did, 30s year old me would find teen/early 20s me pretty embarrassing. Plenty on here did also, it’s like night and day looking at some 2000s threads on here and the language versus the 2020s.
Doesn’t mean someone who’s not bothered to make that minor adjustment is some kind of monster, but it really isn’t hard to do, and you don’t really lose any ability to articulate whatever it is you wanna convey
