Blizzard has said 2mio join every month into bnet sc2. 100k ladder each in eu and na and 50k in korea and maybe 50k in china (rounded numbers). 2 mio / 300k *50k = 333k. Take a look at the viewership numbers for Starcraft 2 whether it is on television (OGN or SPOTV), or on streaming platforms such as Afreeca or DaumPot. It has been minuscule whichever way you cut it. Almost nobody plays it in internet cafes, and the numbers Blizzard releases does not coincide with actual reality of the situation. It is a relic of the past, with a niche following that is even smaller than the dying out viewership for Brood War. Of course, due the multiple constraints Brood War has in terms of getting sponsors, Starcraft 2 will be chosen over it, however, the viewer base has been force fed Starcraft 2, and the results were catastrophic, with the vast majority moving onto other games such as League of Legends or FIFA Online. So when players quit their professional careers for a more casual career as a streaming personality. You either have a choice, be with the times and play the 'it' games of today (neither Brood War nor Starcraft 2 makes the cut), or you play for a niche audience, in which case Starcraft 2 is a substantially worse option than Brood War due to the negligible presence it has on streaming platforms. Kids of today don't play Brood War, but they do know who Bisu and Terror is due to their popularity on Afreeca. | ||
