[SPL] Sonic Gabangpop Proleague: Week 6

After a week of hiatus, our Proleague team returns, with a new week to cover. With the worlds eyes on several real life conflicts at the moment, it feels odd to write an intro glorifying conflict, even one where no one is actually endangered. On the other hand, this context reminds us of how competitive spirit can also be a great force for good, and unites people, rather than dividing. That said, here are last weeks recaps by nbaker, and this weeks previews.

Oz vs. Stx

[image loading] 5 : 4 [image loading]

(Z)beast <Fighting Spirit> (Z)Terror
(Z)beast <Circuit Breaker> (P)Britney
(P)Sky <Neo Electric Circuit> (P)Britney
(P)Sky <Mist> (P)Mini
(Z)Killer <Neo Jade> (P)Mini
(P)SalDaGa <Blue Storm> (P)Mini
(T)HiyA <New Sniper Ridge> (P)Mini
(T)HiyA <Circuit Breaker> (Z)hero
(T)HiyA <Fighting Spirit> (P)Shuttle

Game of the Match: Killer vs. Mini (set 5)

The match started with both teams trading games back and forth. First Beast defeated Terror by exploiting his faster zergling speed in a 12 pool vs. 12 hatch ZvZ, and then Britney answered by easily zealot busting Beast the following game. Sky won a PvP against Britney, who went templar tech instead of robo and died to Sky's eventual DT drop. Mini was the first player to string some consecutive wins together, and he did so in a very impressive fashion. In particular, his game against Killer was utterly dominant, as he transitioned from cannon rushing Killer's third to getting an early second gateway and keeping constant pressure on the zerg with zealots. His coup de gras was a double stargate followup, which decimated Killer's overlord count and won Mini the game.

After giving up three losses to Mini, Oz sent out Hiya, who played a brilliant PvT, scouting Mini's carrier tech and applying constant pressure to keep map control and fight the carriers on his own terms. Hiya then claimed a suffocating victory over Hero, whom held to four bases while expanding all over the map and building up an invincible metal army. STX's last stand was on Fighting Spirit, where Shuttle played the role of their ace. Hiya used a devastating two factory build that crippled Shuttle, killing off his natural and leaving him scrambling to catch up for the rest of the game. He never did, and Hiya ended the series by pushing out across the map with more tanks than Shuttle had dragoons.

Woongjin vs. SBENU

[image loading] 5 : 2 [image loading]

(Z)ZergMaN <Fighting Spirit> (P)Olympus
(Z)ZergMaN <Circuit Breaker> (Z)Soma
(Z)ZergMaN <Neo Electric Circuit> (T)IcaruS
(P)Brave <Mist> (T)IcaruS
(T)PianO <Neo Jade> (T)IcaruS
(T)PianO <Blue Storm> (Z)By.Spire
(T)PianO <New Sniper Ridge> (T)Shinee

Game of the Match: None

SBENU just does not look like a team that can win matches in this league. Zergman of all people opened for Woongjin with a 2-kill. He was stopped by the terran Icarus, whose dropship heavy play proved too taxing on his multitask. Icarus shocked everyone by winning a TvP against Brave with what seemed like a very non-committal early attack with two tanks and a vulture. Brave lost two dragoons to a mine while fighting a retreating battle, and Icarus found himself in position to keep rallying tanks and vultures to Icarus's natural to close out the game. The success was shortlived, however, as Woongjin sent their ace Piano, who cleaned up Icarus, then went 2-rax against Spire, making his TvZ on Blue Storm more difficult than it had to be but ultimately winning in convincing fashion. SBENU's ace was Shinee, who Piano beat in a long TvT on Sniper Ridge.

SKT vs. KT
[image loading]

[image loading] 5 : 4 [image loading]

(P)Pure <Fighting Spirit> (T)Ample
(P)Pure <Circuit Breaker> (P)Eagle
(T)sSak <Neo Electric Circuit> (P)Eagle
(T)sSak <Mist> (T)Light
(T)sSak <Neo Jade> (T)Mind
(T)sSak <Blue Storm> (Z)Modesty
(Z)Larva <New Sniper Ridge> (Z)Modesty
(T)Midas <Circuit Breaker> (Z)Modesty
(P)Bisu <Fighting Spirit> (Z)Modesty

Game of the Match: Pure vs. Ample(set 1)

HTML looked like it was going to take this match easily going into a TvZ on Blue Storm between Ssak and Modesty up 4-1. Ssak went for a 2-rax build against two hatch muta similar to what Piano went for in the previous match (is this actually good?), and looked to be in good shape with a very large bio and tank army bearing down on Modesty's third gas. But with an awesome flank, Modesty was able to defend and save his hatchery, and all of a sudden Ssak was on two bases against four, trying to take a mineral only. Modesty finished Ssak off, and then proceeded to rip off two more wins against Larva and Midas and bring things to a final ace match against Bisu. The Revolutionist quickly quashed any hopes of a KT comeback, doing an excellent job of harassing with sair DTs until Modesty was basically all in on his 5 hatch hydra attack. Bisu easily defended with cannons and storms and countered to win the game.

Week Six PreviewBy: mustaju

KT vs. MBC
[image loading]

Monday, March 10th

Considering Proleague is in its 6th week, it's surprising to say that we still know next to nothing about MBC. It's players got knocked out in the ro16 of the SSL, and they've only played twice. Once beating SKT (whom I still think are gonna win the whole league, and thus a major accomplishment), and the other losing to SBENU. Granted, (T)Sea didn't even bother showing up, but it was still a large hit to the pride of the MBC squad. Now, MBC will be playing every week, and has a lot of opportunities to wash off that blemish, possibly starting with KT.

Following the departure of (T)Light, KT is definitely weaker than before, and this comes at a bad time as well. After going 3-0 in the beginning, they lost twice, and losing one of their best players will make regaining the momentum a lot more difficult. Granted, Light only went 4-3 in Proleague, his most notable win against (T)Mong, but his level of play was very good in the games he lost, and in most games he couldn't even play because (Z)Modesty owned it up too hard. Speaking of Modesty, he might pretty well determine how this match swings.

The recent 41 Starleague champion has been on fire for quite a while, and MBC only having one Terran (who could possibly skip showing up altogether!) has to be something the MBC players are worried about. While he is only 4-4 in ZvP, I expect this record to be improved after this game. KT's Terran-filled lineup, on the other hand, should provide opportunities for MBC, especially (P)Jaehoon, who went 2-1 against Sea in the SSL. (T)Iris, replacing Light, is a bit of a wildcard, but I expect him to snag a win against Lazy or Pusan, then losing to (P)Tyson or Jaehoon. And of course, one can never count out (T)Sea, who can turn out brilliant performances, only to disappear for weeks and return in a way worse form. As a last line of defense, I don't think he'll be able to hold off 3 KT players, but as an ace player, he could well turn a 3-4 into a 5-4 victory.
My prediction: KT wins 5-4, with Mind defeating Sea.

Oz vs. SBENU
[image loading]

Wednesday, March 12th

Having mentioned the upset of SBENU against MBC, I feel rather secure in saying it was a fluke. When faced with significant opposition (such as (T)Light or (T)PianO), SBENU have crumbled and died. And with Oz being Oz, one does not know if (T)HiyA and (Z)Killer are going to be that significant opposition on that day or not. (T)IcaruS has been snatching a few wins for SBENU, along with (Z)by,Spire, but I sincerely doubt this is going to be enough to defeat an in-form HiyA. (Or Killer for that matter, never stop believing Harem!) On the bright side, (P)Sky and (P)SalDaGa should eventually fall to SBENU players easily enough, so they'll likely walk away satisfied with themselves..
My prediction: Oz wins 5-3.

SKT vs Stars
[image loading]

Friday, March 14th

The highlight of the week. Woongjin Stars, the current leader in standings, faces fan favorite SKT. Both have dropped only one game, and most matches in this Proleague get drawn out to the very last match, so there should be excitement in the air.

First off, the supporting casts. (P)Pure is still terrible, but other than that, SKT has a huge advantage. (T)Midas has been in great form, playing extremely well in the games he has lost, even taking out Pusan and Lazy. As of now, I'd say he opens up with a 3 kill against Stars until either ZerO or PianO stops him. Larva, thanks to the immense amount of training that went into practice, should be a decent matchup against anyone but PianO, but I don't think that he can close the deal.

Stars are a top-heavy team. Without (T)PianO or (Z)ZerO, their W/L is 4-9 this season, often getting 1-4-ed until a wild PianO appears and wipes the floor with the enemy. Stars have access to a wildcard in (Z)HoGil to turn the tables. HoGil could make ZerO's or respectively PianO's job a lot easier, being miles better than either (Z)Snail or (Z)ZergMaN, and he should get a kill or two.

As for the main casts, it goes without saying that PianO is really good with his 10-1 record topping the charts. His only loss? An on-fire (Z)hero. ZerO is an enigma. If he wants to, he can destroy players like (T)HiyA or (Z)hero, as amply demonstrated in the (Wiki)1st ZeuS Starleague (which he won!), If not, however.... It's hard to say which kind of ZerO shows up for Proleague. Maybe he just doesn't care. Or maybe the ZSL win motivated him so much, he'll go on a huge rampage now. Until time tells us for sure, his team-league form remains a mystery.

(T)sSak has a very respectable 5-2 standing himself, and remains one of the top Terrans in SosPA, but his threat pales to the one of (P)Bisu. Despite his underwhelming 3-2 score in Proleague, his overall record is an incredible 78,33%. It is also worth mentioning that TvP is PianO's worst matchup, with barely a 50% winrate. That said, if there's a Zerg that can beat Bisu except for hero, it's likely to be ZerO (on a good day). Either way, we have every reason to believe this will be a hard fought match, and you should definitely tune in.

My prediction: 5-4 SKT

It's amazing how close individual game ratios each team is. CJ is at the last place and it still only has -5 deficit. Surprisingly, there are less all-kills and more clan wars that go to the ace match, even than in old proleague.

There's an error in the standings table. Last place is STX. Fixing ASAP.

Thanks a lot for the writeup!

There's a bit of a mistake with the standings table; CJ currently appears twice (and STX doesn't appear).

Larva is misspelled in the end of the KT vs SKT recap.
Great article nonetheless, keep up the good work!

Bisu doesn't get a whole lot of opportunities to amass wins like Piano does. Too bad. But I honestly feel that sSak has been underrated ever since he dropped off in SSL. He's still a force to be reckoned with, especially against Zerg and Terran. He's not Fantasy, but he gets the job done. Also, Larva is great. Hahaha

That said, Zero is probably going to overtake hero soon as best Zerg in BW. Just my gut feel.

Even hero, who lost 1-4 to ZerO and 0-4 to Modesty in recent tournament finals and the TvZ Terran monsters in SOSPA, doesn't really threaten most teams like other aces and can be revenge killed easily.

Yeah it's really weird atm with Shuttle playing bad too. In my opinion STX has the strongest ace duo with hero and Shuttle when they are playing their a-game. The best vP and probably one of the best vT and both are decent vZ.

It's Bisu's looks, isn't it? Can't keep up with the competition.

I recommend TossGirl for advice.

Btw. why the teams still have their old names? Was Sonic able to get sponsorship for them, or is this issue still pending? It seems to me weird to call a team, say, SKT if it has nothing to do with SKT anymore and someone else is supporting it.
