Doubt we'll see Stork anytime soon. He said he wouldn't retire a while back but would be cool to see both though

He also bashed on Afreeca streamers, if I remember correctly, saying something along the lines of he pities those who embarrasses themselves on streams.

As for other players, it's hard to see them retire just because they're struggling. Cases like Jangbi who retired because he lacked/lost passion for the game was incredibly rare. We saw Bisu, free, ZerO, and possibly others that I'm forgetting because they were either not getting money/enough money. It's still a job for players like FanTaSy and EffOrt to play the game, and unless there's an absolute guarantee that these guys can get as much or more money for coming back to Brood War, I doubt we'll see anymore come back for awhile.

Yeah and then Stork got so much backlash from netizens that he did a second interview where he apologized and talked about his time streaming on twitch and how important streaming and connecting with the fans is to the scene or something. It was pretty funny
edit: and don't forget the martyr types like Jaehoon who retired when staff told him they'd be cutting a couple B-teamers to keep him on the team (even after they got a "sponsor")

Jangbi said that he actually loved playing SCII so I wouldn't say he lost his passion. He liked to play it in his free time before the switch as well but ya, I remember Stork's comments and then him taking them back lol

I don't have a link it's just what Jaehoon talked about on his stream. He wouldn't reveal his reason for retiring for a very long time. And Killer said that team 8's sponsor Jin-Air is what you call a name sponsor very similar to ogn sparkyz -> hite sparkyz. Although hite was the "sponsor" their monetary backing is not really there and it's like a way for the sponsor to test the waters I have no sources or links though it's just all things I've heard streamers talk about on afreeca :s

It was mentioned in Ryo's blog too, things he's heard from progamers on their streams.
20. After the Jinair sponsorship was announced in July, Jaehoon thought he was saved. A Jinair executive even told him “we’ll take good care of you.” But not long after that, they went back on their word and Jaehoon had to retire.

Quite sad really. also where's Ryo? He's disappeared

I recall Pure being incredibly disappointed by jinair too. He retired really quick after being announced that he joined the team and on his stream i remember him talking to midas on the phone about how jinair and sc2 has no future for him.

that's sad too. It was really quick wasn't it, like everyone was just 'I thought he joined a team? what happened?'. He's had some rotten luck though, couldn't join Air Force ACE because they didn't have enough room for both him and Kal so he kind of semi-retired then, and when he finished his military duties he's forced to retired once more :/ I hope he does better with BW now (although the latest SPL article doesn't indicate so)

Yes, you are right, none of the Ex-BW would love SC2 like they loved BW, despite some their political statements(from the ex BW still playing Pro SC2) (a public media outlet asks them if they like playing SC2 - is it even viable to give a negative answer? It is a meaningless question in that context, and a meaningless answer. Rather judge by comprehensive history and actions). It's ignorant to think otherwise, based on all available facts. A delusion. Stable income (for now) is probably the main attraction - but dubious given SC2's failure in the Korean market, and the fact that the current SC2 salaries are not that significant in the first place.

Shuttle is making well over 200,000 US dollars per year streaming BW (he showed his bank account, per month, on stream)... Ask him what he thinks about job security and stable income. Shuttle wasn't even one of the better players, in the later years, he hardly got any playing time.

I agree that players in general avoid being negative about the game that they are playing and income means a lot but you can't genuinely believe that none of the players enjoy playing SCII. cmon, that would just be silly lol. It'll be as silly as someone claiming that none of the ex-BW players playing SCII would return to BW if the pro BW scene was back to how it was. From what I recall, there have been some players that were vocal about disliking SCII and preferring BW over it but that depends on the player.

Jangbi specifically stated that he liked playing SCII when he was still a BW pro (before SCII entered hybrid league I'm presuming) so there's no reason to believe he only made that statement for political purposes. Btw, something that BW never had since it was big in Korea and not as big elsewhere was players getting flown out to different countries, having new experiences and such. I guess it's a double edged sword. Lower income with traveling more or higher income but staying in your home country. Tough choice lol.

Some prize money withholding, low pay (earlier on in his khan days, khan notorious for low pay), january deflecting offers from other teams to pick up jangbi. in general just huge favoritism to stork.

January probably had an affair w/ Stork. You can feel so much that it hurts.

That would be some crazy stuff. You'd think it would get out eventually, but maybe not in Korean culture. Not sure how stuff like that works there

I don't have a link it's just what Jaehoon talked about on his stream. He wouldn't reveal his reason for retiring for a very long time. And Killer said that team 8's sponsor Jin-Air is what you call a name sponsor very similar to ogn sparkyz -> hite sparkyz. Although hite was the "sponsor" their monetary backing is not really there and it's like a way for the sponsor to test the waters I have no sources or links though it's just all things I've heard streamers talk about on afreeca :s

interesting, thanks!

Ya if I remember correctly it was like "Pure joins jin air!" annoucement then like less than 2 months later he's on afreeca

I think it might've been even less than that lol.

Here's me hoping Stork and Fantasy try to compete in GOM Classic S5 / SSL10. They've both been doing pretty bad in SC2 so it wouldnt be a surprise.

??

Jangbi loved playing sc2. He was also really good at it too.

He just got scumbagged hard by January and Khan.

What happened?

haha he loved playing sc2? what a joke trust me dude none of the ex-bw ''love'' sc2 probably innovation is the only one cause he is so succesfull and maybe some will 'love' if for the stable income MONEYYYY bitchezz but love ? u must be dreaming!

If you equalize all factors including money, and stability, I don't think there's a question which game Pros would choose - and this is the most relevant consideration.

The Pros were not given a choice in 2012 to choose between BW and SC2. They were forced to play SC2, or do something else. Had they been given the freedom to choose (with no variation in financial compensation, or the opportunity for compensation, or any other positive/negative factor) I don't believe any (~99%) would have switched. And none of them would play SC2 for fun, for any significant duration (statistically, almost no one in Korea is playing SC2 in any case right now, and the trend is downward). (number of reasons for this, mostly centering on the fundamental aspects of each game, from player/viewer standpoint, and how the games are respectively perceived in Korea, and their relative success)

There may or may not have been as much political motivation at that point - who knows, but when you are a public figure, in a public forum, it always exists. In any case, I believe the question and answer still lack significant meaning, regardless of politics. I mean, I'll give you a personal interview right now, and tell you the truth, with no political motivation: I like playing checkers. (but also I haven't played it in 7 or so years, and I don't really feel the need to play it in the future. There are a lot better things to do, I feel, relatively speaking.) On the other hand, I also like watching BW (e.g. I have watched it frequently in the past, and would watch it frequently in the future compared to other things, and find it entertaining compared to other things) - information/context such as this (duration/frequency/magnitude/relativity), is necessary for statements regarding "liking" something, to have any significant meaning).
If he does in fact feel strongly, he is free to play whatever game he wants. I wonder how much time he has since put into each game respectively? He must be desiring very strongly now to play this other game? Since he has retired he will probably be playing this other game very frequently and for long durations in the future in his free time? Because it is so fun, and interesting, and popular, compared to other games, he feels this? Again, based on all available information - which is substantial - it is not too difficult to see what the case is.
