Live Report school is now in session!

The LR initiative! Viewer numbers for Brood War are getting insane. The average gambit cup game gets viewers in the hundreds. The average TLS event can gather over 2,000 viewers! So where is the issue? Chat rooms for the streams are so active it feels like Brood War did 3 years ago when everyone was participating. But we are still missing a MAJOR factor. The Live Report threads are empty.

Now, I understand that the term Live Report means that the thread should be reporting for the game but the term is not black and white. I cannot type play by play every game. And even if I did the thread is no fun if it’s filled up with 3 pages straight of the same person posting. So while I love my post count sky rocketing, it has become a lonely venture.

IF EVERY VIEWER POSTED ONCE WE COULD FILL AT LEAST 20 PAGES EVERY TOURNAMENT!

Here is what quality LR posts look like! Be a part of something great!

The standard LR convo from [SWL] Playoffs Day 2: SK Telecom T1 vs Hwaseung Oz

Hmm, no. That is precisely the reason why a Bisu all kill is more likely than normal.
On March 31 2011 14:36 hellbound wrote:
What I meant to say that Bisu should be given the "final boss" role. And the final boss only gets AK when he gets RAK, which is statistically unlikely. I doubt T1 will risk sending him early and getting him sniped by something random [lol hiya, oztoss etc.] with JD and miniJD still to be played.

EffOrt won every game with cheese (except Game 4 which was retarded).

When EffOrt was put against the wall and he was feeling nervous he relied on cheese.

When Flash was put into game 5, he manned up and went 14 CC like a fucking BALLER

i unno man.... I honestly think the better man lost today. God this series games 3-5 made me mad as fuck.

To be 0-2 down in a OSL final vs the player who has dominated SC the last year and turn it into 3-2 victory and you say the better player lost.

Flash overall is a better player then Effort, but in this final effort played better and smarter. And to say he cheesed is just sore loser mentality tbh.

he won off mass zerglings game 3 / 5 and a retard build from flash game 4

I could fucking do what EffOrt did in those games and I don't even play that match up.

Now Game 1 and 2... Game 2 especially. Take game 2 and look at what position Flash was in and how he came back from it, spreading the map, dropping every where, multi-tasking the shit out of effort. There is no doubt in my mind the better player lost today and it's because sometimes all-in works and EffOrt decided to bank on that after he was down 0-2 because he was nervous and Flash already proved he would rape him in a skillful game. You can say i have a sore loser mentality but you have a republican close minded mentality who doesn't look at the games, you just looks at the score and thats good enough for you. Maybe you should get some insight into the games before you open your mouth.

but seriously, I see at least 200 people and even if we exclude the chinese people we would still have about 100 people watching the SSL during the casts, yet nobody posts in LR threads and nobody votes in the polls for recommended games.

Because it doesn't have the same appeal anymore.

The fun of the LR for me was bashing the KT fanboys, hyping Bisu and cheering for SKT, but all of that is gone.

This is a pretty good question. Why did the people stop posting in LR threads even though the numbers are still high?

I think the biggest reason is that streams have their own chat now and people discuss the games there. But still, I think bringing back some of the hype we had in old LR threads would be so awesome. I try to post in LR threads as much as I can, but from now on I'll try even more!

The LR threads are just a transcript from the stream chat... Maybe TL should do something about it. if I were able to post in a TL chat that was basically attached to a stream = event and would be transcripted into a thread that would be awesome, but LR reporting is inconvinient since the stream and the thread aren't in the same window.

I see this issue too. The obvious reason to post in LR is that when people can always read through the thread to see reactions and participate in discussion during and AFTER the game is over. Chatting live is great but like you said LR is a transcript with no words because no one talks in there anymore. When I go back to 2011 I can read every page of an LR for 50-100 pages and know what happened feel the vibes and tensions from the past. Now when I see and LR it's just a page for results. Is that really what it has come too?

Yeah, but TL can implement something like this without going against Twitch. they implement their own chat next to the stream on the stream page. And that chat is linked to the LR thread.

Get on it RICH!

Yeah I think fabiano has a point here and that is back than we had a professional scene going into live report makes it seem worth while because it's your team playing during the games and you being in the live report is like supporting your team. Well that's how I take it to be and back than I guess it was fun because the other like the person I am quoting will start calling names like Kt Trash Lolster and I will be on the trail shutting them down if I can .

Also back than I believe we had a dedicated live reporter who frequently LR during games (what happen to that carrier guy skt fan guy (Zona ??) ). Your team standings are at stake and as a fan most of us were there to comment about the game no matter how bad we were at live reporting and it also was contributed by the hype and professional scene we use to have .

I can't blame the lack luster of response in the live report this days for SSL some of the games were not interesting and that I mean it was really kind of low compared to the quality we had back than .Although this is to be expected because some of the players who were playing were amateurs and unknown and if the SSL gets to the serious business stage ex broodwar professional going head to head in to mortal kombat and the games are exciting .I will probably be one of the person to be making some comments on the live report.

Nevertheless, Live reporting was fun back than and probably we will can get back the same hype some way or another from the games being more exciting and rivalries to be awaken (If bisu comes back to broodwar and flash retires at the same time to come back to bw) .

I really miss the LR-threads from the good old days. It used to be so much fun to socialize in 'em; to have pleasant conversations with friends, to laugh at all the funny comedians around here, to argue with trolls and/or retards who've made me pull my hair in despair so many times I think I'm going bald, to troll and be retarded myself (;D), to cheer for players/teams I really cared deeply and passionately about...

After the high point of watching the last OSL-final live, I have simply not had much time over for BW, and that in combination with the end of the real proscene in Korea has resulted in me losing of lot of enthusiasm for the game. I still tune in to big events (mainly TLS), but I literally never play it anymore, and I don't feel compelled to make 150 posts a week to discuss it. I think I spend more time watching CS:GO these days than BW.

Anywho, I agree that the Twitch chat has sort of replaced the function of the LR-threads. But it does indeed lack the perpetual qualities and the soul that the LR-threads of old had.
I believe in the almighty Grötslev! -- I am never serious and you should never believe a thing I say. Including the previous sentence.

I would say more people are watching TLS live now than OSL/MSL back in the day. When I got into the scene (2008), livestream viewer numbers were around 400/500 (maybe less?) with many more people watching vods the day after or something like that. I guess it just comes down to hype

Just spam an entire page in every LR thread before your rebroadcast with "SPOILERS" so that people can jump to the last page and start their own little LR there.

I might as well post this here maybe more people will read it so I can get an answer. Whenever I watch SSL live on snipealot its in widescreen... I just can't watch BW widescreen, can't do it so I usually wait for the korean vods that are in 4:3 to pop up somewhere (if they come up at all).
So I guess my question would be is there any way to watch the stream in 4:3? Really difficult watching live because of that (btw, would feel really sad if everybody watches it in 4:3 and I'm the only one getting widescreen)
edit: It's not that bad its just weird, does Sonic broadcast in widescreen? And sorry for offtopic

Last time I've seen an SSL broadcast snipealot2 was up in 4:3 and snipealot3 in 16. An afreeca viewer can switch the ratio with 2 simple clicks so it doesn't matter too much there, sadly twitch doesn't have such option (afaik).

You have raised many good points of past LR's, but missed the most important one: the MSPaint art. Seriously, while the Proleague ready-made backgrounds were all fine and dandy and the occasional (and later often expected) banners by Hyde/Disciple were stunning, it was the quickly thrown-together basic threads that were best. And of course all the memes relating to teams/players just added to the awesome. Stuff like this, this, this or that just made everything more fun both for live participants and for people reading through the thread later (like me).

LR threads were that awesome mix of a great template, pregame fanboi thrashtalk, quality LR'ing a game (which is really hard, I tried it for some time but couldn't fucking type fast enough), reactions to what happened on screen and post-game strategical analysis. And of course the screenshots/gifs of whatever epic moments we witnessed, splashed with a dash of MSPaint for later enjoyment. This is hard to replicate when many people don't invest this much time/aren't involved with the game. Without a team/player to root for it's hard to get back to old habits of waking up in the middle of the night with your finger ready on the print-screen button and 3 mspaint windows open at a time xD.

As stratos said, for the past two weeks we have been doing dual broadcasts of sonic as there are no fpvs. snipealot2 has the normal 4:3 aspect you are looking for.

The thing is this: i don' t really care how many people would watch BW. I would watch it even if there was a single person in the chat and a person streaming. Broodwar is like modern day-Chess.

I don't know how to make the threads, don't know if I'd want to. However, I can join in more @ the LRT, only thing is I am normally posting a shit-ton in the chat @ live room so seems a bit redundant to repeat myself in the LRT

will give it a shot

It also saddens me how few people make LR these days. I think we should aim to fix that as well with this initiative. So whenever you watch some BW event and notice that there is no LR thread, make one!

Especially events like these Sonic showmatches which are so high skilled and yet the information about them is so scarce

A major thing is updating the results. That's why I made gambit cup LR-ing super easy. Just put the wiki link to results and than anybody can update the wikipage with results. Doing live result updates otherwise can be considered burdensome for the OP.

That's actually an awesome idea. We should definitely have a Liquipedia page for these SOSPA event matches as well.

I've been thinking about it, but it's hard to put it together. There's a wide variety of event matches with varying prizes and a long list of players that you'll only see there. There's the always ongoing KotH tournament which could get its own page and be somewhat organized, but stuff like team matches or the minitours or showmatches and so on would be hard to document. Doesn't help that there's no documentation of earlier results apart from what can be found in Arvick's thread.

Would be awesome though, absolutely.

I always liked the LR threads but I'm tending to watch the games after the fact at the moment. Still, if I am watching it live I'll be sure to check in to the LR thread, and they're always fun to come back to later for extra trashtalk anyway

Might I add SSL8 via BisuDagger's and Snipealot's TwitchTV has been stupendous - if you haven't watched + Show Spoiler [Group E] +

So that's all the "supermatches" then. How would they be titled? They're usually not titled by Sonic, it's just "Supermatch" unless it's a special event like it was around Chinese New years.

I could imagine having a single page for the KotH series, and depending on how often it's held, it could be split into sub-pages of 1 month, 3 months, 6 months or a year or something like that to keep it less cluttered. The team games I have no idea how to document though, there's no consistency or anything like that most of the time.

Anyone can feel free to pm me ideas or content cos I have been out of the loop for a long time
