Hello everyone, I am STX Soul’s progamer Seo Ji Soo (ToSsGirL).
Last week, we met up with Samsung Khan’s Park Dae Ho (TurN). We were able to hear the truths behind nicknames and related keywords. Although it was nice learning more about the well-known Samsung Khan, it was better to hear that people enjoyed learning more about an unfamiliar TurN.
This week’s medic date guest belongs to the same team as TurN. A very loved player who is very often attacked by fans. A player who has pulled through the hard times to find himself up at the top again. He receives jealousy as he has revealed that he has a girlfriend yet maintains great results, there is only Samsung Khan’s Song Byung Gu (Stork).
Stork can actually be referred as an oldie now. Among the current progamers, Park Jung Suk (Reach), Ko In kyu (Canata) and I have played the longest but even I have come to classify Stork as an oldie. However, Stork is not willing to confirm himself as an oldie.
Although we have never met on the streets, Stork always greets my kindly in the stadium. It has been said that he spreads this kindness throughout the e sports community. Therefore, this medic date was comfortable throughout.
ToSsGirL (TG) = It seems like it’s been a while. Have you been well?
Stork (S) = After seeing each other at the all stars match, I think it has been over a year since we’ve seen each other. As you can see, I have been well (laughs). Obviously there have been many trials but my team placed 2nd in the regular season and I got a chance to be a most-wins award winner, even if it was under the Protoss Category, so I think there have also been many good things. How have you been, nuna? [T/N: Nuna is what a boy would call an older girl]
TG = I’ve been practicing hard. Waiting for a chance to beat Stork (laughs).
S = Before, even if I wanted to play against you, because I was only amateur, I couldn’t even think about requesting a battle (laughs). I think that was about 10 years ago. When I was an amateur, I saw you for the first time.
TG = I’m pretty sure that I greeted you first on Battle Net. I was in first year of middle school, right? [T/N: I can’t remember but I’m pretty sure that’s Grade 7] (laughs)
S = That was when you were a kkakkamuhli middleschooler (laughs). + Show Spoiler +
On March 23 2012 19:50 carbonaceous wrote: 'Kkakkamuhli' used in this context basically means 'newbie'. Just as you get your hair shaved off when you first enter the army in South Korea, it's used to mean being new in middle school, i.e. 7th grade. Stork is basically echoing TG's question with a colloquialism. (No, they do not literally shave your head when you enter middle school, that would be mean :p).
It was then that I got to know Tossgirl’s twin sister in the channel of the guild I wanted to join. Im Sung Chun (IntoTheRain) was also in that guild. Because I wanted to be in that guild, I remember playing many games with Ji-Eun (Tossgirl’s twin sister) nuna and trying hard to become close with her. + Show Spoiler [서지수,서지승,서지은 (Seo Ji Soo, Seo Ji Seung,…] +
TG = Seo Ji Eun talks about that a lot. She always tells people “I’ve actually done teamplay games with Stork.” But others often give her a stare of disbelief (laughs). I can’t even count how many times [Ji Eun] talks about how you’re such a well-mannered player.
S = Looks like I will have to buy Ji Eun nuna food. Feels good to know that there is someone saying such great things about me.
TG = Other than those times, I don’t really want to talk about my games with you (laughs). I lost every time. What’s worse, I lost in devastating ways.
S = That’s because you were terran and I was protoss. If you were zerg, you could have taken me down with hydra rushes or zergling rushes. Or you can just 5 pool (laughs).
TG = When was the first time we met offline?
S = During the 2005 So Yang Gyo Yook [T/N: Basically a retreat for starcraft education]. The reason I remember is because that was the first time I went to a 1 night 2 day SYGY. Oddly enough, you should up to the match stadium when your team played except when it was against Samsung Khan, so I was quite sad (laughs).
TG = Even still, I think I learned a lot from you and asked you many questions on Battle Net. I remember that at first, you weren’t that good and being shocked when you improved greatly in a short period of time.
S = At that time, I lost a lot to you (laughs). I believe many netizens are saying that you will even lose to amateurs so I recommend you [play against them] (laughs). I’m thinking these statements will stop if you strongly prove them wrong once. [T/N: No disrespect but she didn’t do so well in b.Net Attack. But then again, Stork did worse lol]
TG = There’s only been one question I wanted to ask if I met with Stork. It seems like you have many more male fans than other players; why do you think that is?
S = That’s really simple. When I give good results, I’ve beat a handsome opponent. I defeated a player who has a lot of female fans. Oldies who have many fans, do so because of their handsome looks. And my current rival, Kim Taek Yong (Bisu) is also good looking. Usually male fans tend to cheer for those they pity. I’m pretty sure they cheer for me because I’m most often the ugly one when they compare me to my opponent. [T/N: HAHAHAHAHA]
TG = That is impossible. Fans also say that Stork is a desirable-hyung. There must be some sort of appeal that the males are falling for.
S = My appeal is pity (laughs)? Capture me in the same screen as Bisu. I’m a guy and even I will cheer for Bisu. Handsome gamers can get away with slightly lesser results but a player like me should at least play the game well (laughs).
TG = Still, even without that reason, you still have many male fans. Whether it’s the finals or Ro4, during the important matches, your opponent’s fans always seem to be overshadowed.
S = There is the fact that I’m a protoss player. Usually protoss players have many male fans. I don’t think it’s just me who has [male fans]. Isn’t it because I’m a protoss player and they pity me?
TG = Well, your appearance has gotten a lot better since you first debuted (laughs).
S = At that time, my nickname was ‘안여돼’ (Ahn Yuh Dwe). It meant “Glasses wearing, pimple filled, pig.” [T/N: For the Korean readers: 안경 쓴 여드름 많은 돼지라는 뜻이었죠.]
TG = But at some point, you lost a lot of weight and started to look cool. Specifically, your nose got a lot prettier. Did you get any Botox done by any chance (laughs)?
S = I too get shocked when I look at photos of myself in 2005. It looks like a different person. That’s why I think money is a very good thing (laughs). I only took care of them pimples but it makes this much of a difference so people should start making money (laughs). I went on a lettuce diet to lose all the weight. But now, I’ve started to eat again so I’m sad.
TG = I still think it’s good fortune that you have so many male fans.
S = Whether it’s male fans or female fans, a player is always to happy to have fans at all. It’s the fans’ cheering that causes a player to up is game by 200%. During a finals match, it’s hard to hear the fans cheering while on the stage, but during the Ro4, they are right in front of you so it’s easier to hear them. I think that’s why I do so well in Ro4 matches.
S = To be honest, I want to say I’m first (laughs). But nobody can deny Flash the first place ranking. And then after him it could be Jaedong, Bisu or me. First off, our salary is different (laughs). Honestly, in 2007, I was doing the best, but nowadays, they are doing so well that it is a little intimidating.
TG = As you said, it’s been such a long time since you debuted and to fit yourself in TBLS, you must feel some pressure.
S = I was always on the border line. Long before during the time of the 3 god protosses, Oh Yeong Jong (Anytime), Park Ji Ho (Pusan) and Stork arose, I was eliminated first and later on, while Anytime won first place and Pusan got to the Ro4, there were some people saying ‘Shouldn’t stork be excluded?’ Even now there is talk like that. Last year, there was even ‘TaekLeeSsang’ or ‘AllButBang’ that started to float around. With Bisu winning Most Wins King and Flash and Jaedong performing well in individual leagues, fans were starting to look for a new up and coming player like Shin Dong Won (Hydra) or Jung Myung Hoon (Fantasy) to replace me. When Hydra and Fantasy won first, that’s when it started to circulate ‘Shouldn’t we replace Stork with some other player?’ But now since my proleague record is somewhat better, I feel that it was a good thing to hear these statements.
TG = Maybe this is a side effect of having been so good for so long. Truthfully, they’re not who you should be compared with (laughs). This is like comparing Lim Yo Hwan (BoxeR) to Lee Yoon Yul (NaDa). The times when they were at their prime are different yet it seems like people are fighting saying one is better. Regardless, other progamers must feel some jealousy.
S = I’m starting to think like that so I’m relaxing a bit more (laughs).
TG = In that case, what kind of presence do you think TBLS brings?
S = Honestly, before, I just thought of it as a rivalry. But nowadays, I think of them more as partners. Especially now as there is a lot of talk about E-Sports being in crisis, we should help each other show a good performance. And with the reduction of games, there are reduced chances of any of us meeting, but in the off chance that we do meet, we should show exciting games to excite fans and maybe even revive E-Sports. These aren’t only my thoughts but thoughts of other players as well. Not too long ago, I faced Flash and the sound of the shouting was no joke. Fans must have been waiting for something like this. And although I lost the game going carriers, I thought it would be awesome to be able to hear that kind of shouting all the time.
TG = Individually, who among TBLS do you consider a rival?
S = Individually, I only think of Flash as a terran. There are even times when I consider him as nothing much before coming to face him. There’s too much of a difference in age and experience to consider him a rival. It’s like an uncle calling his nephew a rival. More importantly, I’m not Flash’s target. In Flash’s eyes, there is only Jaedong that he considers a rival. I might get rejected (laughs). My rival is Bisu who is plays the same race and is about the same age. Even though our wins ranking doesn’t really compare, when I play Bisu, I really hate losing. That’s why I consider him a rival. Wouldn’t the person you hate losing to be your rival?
TG = What kind of presence do you think Flash brings?
S = At first I was thankful but now he definitely brings a frustrating presence (laughs). When Flash was first starting to gain attention, he lost quite a bit to me. But then in a 2 week span that I was fighting him in the finals, [T/N: 2008 XNote GOMTV Star Invitational, Bacchus OSL] I lost both championships with a 2-6 record. It was at that point I started to despise Flash (laughs). Now, I feel like the difference has become so big that it can’t even be compared. He has now become a distant presence (laughs).
TG = But as I met him recently, it still seems he is a naïve 20 year old young adult.
S = Of course he is like a cute younger brother when I meet him out in public. Regardless if you look at age or experience, I have to treat him like a cute younger brother, but oddly, Flash does not suit that personality. Maybe because he earns more money than me (laughs). I’m the type who enjoys buying food for my dongsengs [T/N: Dongseng = someone younger than you] but when it comes to Flash, I feel as though I should get something from him.
TG = Even I felt that a little bit (laughs). Even thinking I should get him to buy me expensive food (laughs).
S = There’s something I want from both Flash and Jaedong. Both of them have a received the golden mouse and many first place gold medals so they should a lot of gold. They should sell that gold and sponsor the ‘LeeSsangBae’ [T/N: Bae here is referring to company or sponsor. Thanks GTR!] starleague. I wish the OSL would hurry up and start. And since Flash has fallen, I also want to see if I can break the most consecutive appearances record (laughs). [T/N: See even Stork isn’t thinking that this is the last OSL. Believe Stork!]
TG = Seriously, if they did sell their gold medals and golden mouses (mice?), there would be more than enough to sponsor a starleague (laughs).
S = It would be a piece of cake! Maybe even enough for 2 (laughs).
If part two is not translated by the time I have more free time, I will translate it. Honestly I just translated this while taking a break from my essay and studying. Also, I'm quite tired so there may be mistakes.
Not enough pictures of Tossgirl imo. lol Thanks for the translation! I wonder why Tossgirl asked him about his male fans? If anything, some of those pictures of him without a shirt on should be leading to a discussion of female fans.
oh my god yes thank you! I'd been trying to translate this bit by bit, but it was proving to be too hard for me. I'm so glad someone else picked it up :D
storkuu <3 stop being such a silly goose, you are way more handsome than you give yourself credit for
Stork is the member of TBLS that anyone can relate to. He's amazing, in that sense. He's also the most friendly of them, and has the best sense of humor.
I want the next one to be "Tossgirl and Stork on Bisu" hahaha
each time is see these interviews and I'm not sure if the photographer is the same each time, but the pics, they're so so so so terribad makes me wanna cry
I felt sad that there is so much pressure on Storky for being in TBLS, but hes one of the oldest active non-ACE progamers and still producing great results. He's protoss legend, if you like it or not.
It's very entertaining to hear about player's attitude and rivalry. Guess it is true, Flash / JD, Stork / Bisu. I wonder how Fantasy gets consequently ignored in these discussions)

I'm fairly certain that even though "recent" encounter ended with flash winning that flash considers fantasy a serious rival. That semi final Bo5 was ridiculous.
SBG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let's do this Khan, crush the 2 Empires! Make way for Khan Dynasty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!
Hmm. i always thought that Stork looks very good. So i am surprised, that he doesnt have so many female fans. Maybe all female Protoss fans are already Bisu fans, so nothing is left for Stork ? :D Always so interesting these interviews. Thx for translating.

What's wrong with the title?
Absolutely nothing, ignore him. Tossgirl shall forever be on men. It is the way of the world.
As far as I understand, 배/bae is a sort of suffix used to denote a sponsor, e.g SKY배 프로리그, 코카콜라배 스타리그, but they stopped using it in 2004 (in the naming of Starcraft leagues, at least).
So in the terms of 이쌍배, I guess it could be directly translated as the 'Leessang Company'?

Song Byung Goo makes up for his looks with personality. That's why he have a gf and the others in TBLS don't. The reason why Stork have many male fans is because he's a average-looking nerd, which they can relate to.
Other than that, great to see this series continue, always charming to read. Ironic that Flash ends up being the topic of interest regardless of whom you interview though lol

No, he has male fans because he plays like a baller, the only Protoss who stares down tank lines and goes "yep, bring it".
And then the tank lines die.
OK, not the only one, but he's the most consistent about it. Really knows when to be aggressive when most P's just run away from siege mode.

TG hottest truly female progamer. (I think Letagirl has a shot so I'm not going to make any blanket statements)
TG = I’m pretty sure that I greeted you first on Battle Net. I was in first year of middle school, right? [T/N: I can’t remember but I’m pretty sure that’s Grade 7] (laughs)
Stork balling it out when he was in grade 4? Damn boy i was playing like pokemon.(Tossgirl is 3 years older.) Stork going to show whos boss in TBLS when he and his team withs the playoffs.
I always saw him as stellar BW protoss player and nothing else. And after that i have this image of a freaking good protoss player who got himslef cut or w/e to look like an korean idol or something...Damn you rotinegg!
Stork's also got nothing to be ashamed about being on TBLS. While he's lost to all of them in a finals, he's also the one who (used to) have winning records vs them for quite a number of games, and he's the only player among them who bridges quite a large generation gap (by being part of the Neo 3 Kings and the 6 Dragons).

Actually, Stork still has winning records over both Jaedong and Bisu, and is only 1 game behind Flash (or is 50-50 even, for standard games) ^^
'Kkakkamuhli' used in this context basically means 'newbie'. Just as you get your hair shaved off when you first enter the army in South Korea, it's used to mean being new in middle school, i.e. 7th grade. Stork is basically echoing TG's question with a colloquialism. (No, they do not literally shave your head when you enter middle school, that would be mean :p).

Here's a pair of before/after pictures of Stork from rotinegg's blog linked to by Leny_1 in this thread.
I think Stork is actually on the good-looking side nowadays, but you can see where he might have an inferiority complex from before.

No she is in fact just that hot, don't be modest. I mean obviously I can think of a lot of women superior to her, but that doesn't mean she still isn't droolworthy.

During a large foreigner/Korean event, he was quoted as being disgusted that any Korean lost a game to any foreigner. They were a lesser player, deserved no respect, and he urged Koreans to not lose another game to those [demeaning term I don't recall translated from Korean]
I used to love Stork, now I just can't have any respect for him any more. Other professionals know the value of supporting foreign fans and players, he suffers from extreme Korean elitism.

Source? It must have been a mistranslation or misinterpretation if it was that harsh. Daniel from Austria who became somewhat famous for his appearances at games chanting "Song Byung Goo!" was received well by Stork.

It's actually more immature to hold grudges against stupid prejudices that someone held when they were younger. Did you not have really dumb opinions at some point in time?

I remember that on WCG in the group stage in one game he was thinking to lose or not lose, so that he won't meet with his fellow korean. Also he once put an obs above turret on WCG, but don't remember was he punished for that or not.

It would be shameful for any A rank ICCup player to lose to a C rank player. Because all Koreans are A rank and all foreigners were C rank (relatively speaking), this statement holds water and is not unfounded. Korean pros don't care much about foreign fans (in the sense that so few visit TL/get more than like 1 card from NeverGG/have any experience with foreign fans whatsoever) and are often surprised they have any at all. You're getting too hurt because of the obvious skill gap. Jaedong once said "it's like playing against the computer" after playing the WCG rep from Kazakhstan. It was more or less true - there is really no nice way to put the skill difference imo. Anything like "If they try really hard, they might be able to be as good as me (Stork/Jaedong)!" is just a cheesy lie.
Thanks for the translation OP, part 2 would be great when you have some free time ^^

I used to love Stork, now I just can't have any respect for him any more. Other professionals know the value of supporting foreign fans and players, he suffers from extreme Korean elitism.
