It took many of us a long time to come to terms with the loss of MBCGame, which was announced would transition into a music channel at the end of this month. With a rich decade long history, MBCGame, as the home of countless entertaining game shows, the beloved MSL, and half of the Proleague life line, will be sorely missed. It was here that AHHHH!! PLAYYGUUUU!!! and RIBO RIBO RIBO were coined. It was here that fantastically pimp plays were carried out, revolutions occured, and amazing ceremonies brought tears to our eyes from laughter.
Yesterday, MBCGame recorded its very last show, a program titled, "Adieu, MBCGame." Casters Kim Chul Min and Shark, along with host Kang Hyunjong from Star Infinity Challenge gathered to share the channel's history and legacy, and reflect on the many years they spent together. The show is scheduled to air during the Lunar New Year holidays, starting on the 20th.
Kim Chul Min: Tomorrow morning at 6AM, I'll be leaving my house to film MBCGame's last program, "Adieu, MBC Game." At that time, I want to give the proper goodbye that I wasn't able to before. Thank you all so much for the time I had [with MBCGame]. I'll always keep those moments in my heart. I love you.
Lee Seung Won: Even though it ended this way, I'll never forget the times and memories, and I'll remain true to the person I am wherever I work. This was the tenor of The Trio (Lee Seung Won, Kim Chul Min, Kim Dong Jun), the Seung of MakByungSeung (Park Sang Hyun, Yoo Byung Joon, Lee Seung Won), and the Seung of MakChungSeung (Park Sang Hyun, Lim Seung Choon, Lee Seung Won). This was MBCGame's Lee Seung Won. [thank you Opticalshot <3]
Shark: We're recording "Adieu, MBCGame" right now! The script is very thick~ but considering it's filled with 12 years of history, it's actually not enough^^ Today, tomorrow, and the day after, a 3 day recording journey~ I'll see everyone on the MBCGame New Year's Special^^ + Show Spoiler [twitpic] +
GoRush: I'd like to say a few words about MBCGame today. Tomorrow is the last broadcast, and I give my condolences to those who stayed with MBCGame to the end. To think that the place that gave me the huge honor of an individual league win is shutting down hurts me deeply. Even if it disappears though, I'll treasure it in my heart forever.
If anyone finds any other tweets or messages, please let me know. These just happen to be the ones I follow.

Are you really that rude and inconsiderate? After everything they have done for BW, you want them to fail in their new pursuit? Very unsympathetic.
I was translating the interview myself, until dothegee posted it first and just erased the document (kudos to dothegee for awesome work). Let me point few things out here:
1. Kim Chul Min thinks that his 10 years at MBCgame was worthless given the situation 2. All employees were basically 'fired' from the job including but not limited to producers, writers, casters and commentators 3. MSL was promised, but it ain't going to happen. ABC Mart MSL was the latest and last MSL there ever will be 4. They were forced to record the show 'Adieu, MBCgame' because they ordered people from MBCgame to make such program. No one really liked the idea nor the fact that they were the ones doing it 5. This new pursuit has caused a lot of problems: MBCgame Heros disbanding, many people getting fired, Ongamenet forced to cast more proleague matches etc. etc. without ANY compensation to people who were involved in the field.
It's like telling me to sympathize with the house owner who just kicked out my best friend from his house in a blink of an eye without any 'good reason' or compensation. Doesn't matter if the house owner was 'nice' in the past if my best friend just got evicted without doing anything wrong.
To ArvickHero: I'm quite mad about this situation as well, but realize that MBC is one of 'big 3' television channels in Korea, but making the least profit. It's all about $$$, and if they think music would do better than game, then fuck everyone else's situation, they're going to change the channel without any compensation.
This was my brother's first visit to MBCgame. He loved it so much.
Few days later, I told him that MBCgame is shutting down.
I've seen my brother getting angry few times in his life, and this was one of them. What can I say? Even someone who wasn't into BW for a long time knows that this is wrong.

yea I realize that, but I still think it's fucking stupid. Hence, I want this new venture to completely fall flat on its face .. but it won't. So the only thing I can do is express my anger for my own satisfaction
SO LONG MBCGAME! You guys were the best, and I loved all your shit. Whoever picks up all the MBCGame crew and makes a new game channel, will be my hero for life.

Just to add on my two cents, while I was translating, I was really shocked (and I'm sure Kiett, supernovamaniac, and whoever else read the interview in Korean felt the same way) at how openly angry the interview was. Kim really sounded like a devastated, bitter man in that interview. Looking back on what we know about the closing of MBCGame, a lot of it seems really shady, with very little information being revealed to the public. I think a large part of the anger stems from that kind of betrayal - we, the fans, made MBCGame into what it is today and we never even got to say a proper goodbye. If they had closed out the final MSL, openly told us that it was a business decision, and we got a real sending off to the channel, we wouldn't feel nearly as angry as we do now.

P.S. Was me, notice @SNM?
Yeah. I wish I had started posting on TL sooner, so I could have met people and enjoyed PL @ MBC with friends instead of standing around on my own for 3 hours because I didn't know anyone. Sigh.
Thanks for the memories, MSL and MBCGame. It makes me so sad that Kim Chul Min is in such a state that he wants to forget it all, that his last 10 years was a waste. Maybe he says that in anger and will think differently when he is not faced with his tormentors. No matter what though, I won't be forgetting the MSL.
This is fucking terrible T_T. A music channel! Of all things! There are like a million of them! Although admittedly i do imagine that apart from the actual MSL and Starleague there was practically no viewership so it'd make sense to have just one channel I guess? Not that I need to like it...
Thank you for the memories MBCGame, MSL, and all those who put their heart and soul into making StarCraft more than just another game. I will never forget.

Ok im kinda new but what have they done for BW? if u mean tournaments and stuff like that its not like they did it for free... they got money from that , now they just wanted to get more cash its simple and understandable, but that sucks for BW community, i dislike MBC aswell.
Imagine i rent u a house , u pay for that and suddenly i tell u to get out of that place because i found new guy who will pay me more for renting , would u still be thankful to me that i let u stay in my house in the past? because thats pretty much same process , MBC is not a charity, its company that cares about money.

Hey, let us make a distinction between MBCGame, the people who poured many years of their lives into BW, and MBC, the unethical business that cut an MSL half way thru and didn't tell anyone they were getting fired until weeks after they'd already decided on it.
Bye MBC game, it was a pleasure to meet you. I regret only finding about progaming after sc2 realease. Nevertheless, the only mbc games that I watched were abc mart MSL finals and will be a good memory. I will miss you.
i dont get it. bw is still strong in korea. why would they shut it down? there are so many kpop channels in korea, it is a saturated market, do they really think they can make more $$ by doing kpop?
to be honest, I knew that something like this would happen to MBCGame... When I was at LOOX in dec 2010, the place looked like a construction site and there were not many ppl coming to the games. Still some good memories though...

goodbye!!
Indeed. Sometimes I think that MBCGame did in part dig its own grave. This wasn't inevitable. They picked an awful place to open the studio (if only they could have kept the place at COEX, but expanded it). If there are Proleague games going on at the same time, nobody's going to go to Mullae, which is creepy and empty as hell, over Yongsan's I'Park mall, where OGN is. And then there were rather damaging fiascos like the Power Outage MSL. While OSL finals are going on in a humongous airplane hangar, MSL finals are held in a small auditorium where only fanclub members are allowed to attend, and they aren't even watching the players live, but instead a projection of them. The management screwed it up, blamed the stagnation on the "dying scene," then closed the channel without really taking a good look at where they could have changed things :/
T_T I will always remember the great moments and excitement MBCgame has given me in the past years. Never have I set alarms to wake up at 4 AM to stream games until them. BW has taken a big hit with the closing of MBGgame, with no more MSL and more stress on a lone channel. I hope they expand and find profit somewhere with BW
Despite arriving relatively recently to eSports (within the last 18 months) I can't help but feel sad about the death of MBCGame because I have come to realise the integral role that this organisation has played in making Starcraft the phenomenon that it is.
What a joyous day, for me at least. I have spent the better part of 5 years on brood war and although it saddens me that one of the two greats has fallen, I hope that in future a new BW, no, esports dedicated channel will arise from the ashes of MBC!
OGN better step it up and dont slack due to the lack of competition.
Hopefully, someone else will rise up to take your place.
I was more of an OSL guy (because Nuke casted the OSL!), but my first Flash/Jaedong was from MSL. It was the power outage game. I was very angry, because I thought Flash still had it

No, it is not all about $$$, and there is plenty of examples of it. As a company you can value "making good shit" more then "higher profit possibility" to make everybody love you, and when everybody loves you - it is easier to make $$$. And yeah, come to that - its not like MBC will automatically have more money just by changing channel name from MBCGame to MBCKPop, so they could finish things in proper way - "farewell MSL" (with Bisu winning ), more time for OGN, Kespa and sponsors to decide what to do, etc.
I'm actually think that you can't expect anything else but rage from people when you fuck everybody and not only fans, but also business partners and employees.

For people who don't follow BW at all, it's not common knowledge that MBCGame is shutting down, it's hardly stupidity and when someone sees this it's a valid question. Dying is a harsh word, but it's hard to argue that BW is declining.
I've only been a fan for 2 years, but I'm angry the closure of MBCGame had to happen the way it did. Like others in this thread and in the Kim Chul Min one have said, it would have been much easier to swallow if MBC had done it the proper way- finishing the MSL, announcement in advance, etc. Not keeping it from their own employees and then suddenly pulling out the rug from under them. The loss of MBCGame is so bitter already, but how it happened was infinitely worse. Pouring 10 years of your life into the channel and the development of gaming and then it ends like this

Thanks for the translations. What a shame, all those shows that are now gone T_T so much history. They didn't even give MSL a proper goodbye.
Far out, I can't believe this is actually happening. I hope some people can sub this in the future so people can watch and understand what is being said in the final show.
Personally i moved on to sc2 to play and watch.. However, This is one of the saddest things I've read on TL ever. The 2052 comic made me teary eyed, and just remembering all the time i spent watching MBC.
This is so sad oh so sad, even if i have only followed bw for 1½ year now i managed to create a relation to MBCgame, their casters, MBCgame Hero and i wished myself one day to travel their myself and see the matches in live action, a future dream for me. That will never happen now . How this whole thing turned out is sad and unfair for the people and staff involved with MBCgame over it's 10 years lifetime. Watching Hyung Jun becomes a progamer made me a greater fan than i woulda thought.Their chemistry and work together you could really tell they loved it and loved being their doing what they love. eSports.

BW is dying. Its just what has to happen when a business no longer makes profit or can see a better opportunity. Its business.
Starcraft 2 is a far more popular game and rising and BW is dying. (I know mbc shutting down has nothing to do with SCII. But atleast be happy that is growing.

This is the reason I objected any msl thread's from being featured . You know why ? The never ending , Horde's of doom and gloom will try to remind me that my happy place is going to to go soon . Fact is sc2 is the popular game but in the end broodwar is the only game that is respectable .

Heh. I could only scroll halfway down the cartoon that's been linked many times that I've seen many many times without tearing up and calling it quits. Farewell, MBCGame, thank you for everything.
Don't worry, that cartoon makes me cry a lot every time even though I've read for like 20 times. Think as if you were Lee Seung Won when you read it. It's just so beautiful. I've been following BW proscene only since 2005 and I cry every time. I can't imagine how it must feel when you've been working at MBCGame for 10+ years and suddenly get fired because the channel becomes a music channel....
In the words of one of my heroes, "don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."
I wish MBCGame the best of luck in the future. They've enriched my life, and the lives of countless others, through entertainment for years and it would be a pretty shitty thing to wish failure upon them moving forward, instead of acknowledging how awesome they've been in the past.

actually this is pretty much true. from a neutral perspective, k-pop is booming, while esports is slowly dying, so i completely understand mbc's decision to scrap mbcgame and turn it into mbc music.
k-pop has sort of replaced the niche that brood war filled 6-7 years ago (something fangirls can generate money for an industry to).
started watching bw religiously 8 months ago, after i saw how much more interesting it was relative to sc2 (for me, not making a generalization, and not trying to stir the pot there so pls dont flame me or w/e). this truly saddens me as i was just getting acclimated to the wonderful word of bw progaming. i guess its good for me that there are hundreds and thousands of vods for me to pore over and have fun reliving, but it will never be the same thing as watching with friends live on vent.

I never understood why people actually like kpop Well, its really sad that bisu is never going to win a star league again. I might just watch all 3 jvf finals ... goodbye.
I blame it on the league destroyer Flash. If he had been super good looking and acted like a jerk though though he's really a nice guy deep inside, MBC Game would still be alive.

@topic 1) yep k-pop is booming, but why they can't create MBC Music while not shutting down MBC Game? They fired all employees and probably game studio will not come in use for music channel. So, it is not sounds like MBC is changing something, they actually destroy one channel and creating another. 2) Again, last MSL. Im sure that knowing that this is the last MSL people would watch it, so it shouldn't be hard to attract sponsor. Just for money MBC had have to run last MSL.
I can't help but feel for everyone affected directly by this... The players and employees got shafted, and they're right to feel extremely angry. I'm going to miss MSL, there were so many memories enshrined and legends born through it. I think what struck me the hardest was the talk of "the beginning of the end" for broodwar, but I feel like this is the first real sign that the beginning of the end is underway. From what I've seen in interviews, Carrier Kim has always been extremely candid and wears his emotions on his sleeve. Good bye MBC. I hope you guys suck as a music company and return to SC, where thousands of people you don't even realize are weeping over the lose of the MSL. Until 2052. Au Revoir.

2052, the PROMISED YEAR By then hopefully I've succeeded (epic massive supermassive success) in life and will actually be a retired billionaire who can take private jet flights just to watch live eSports events. Then I'll print out that cartoon, meet LSW at the 2052 MSL (how old is he going to be then? T_T) and we'll have a good laugh afterwards at a local bar.
I haven't watched an MSL (besides the finals) in like a year and a half and watch maybe PL game every month or so, I was sad to hear MBC Game was going to be gone but it wasn't a HUGE deal for me anymore. But reading that cartoon again made me tear up a little...
I'm hoping this will open up a gap for another Game channel, BW is still popular and there are a handful of booming games that they could cover, OGN can't really do it all alone.

You mean run E-sports events in your own home? That would be the life...

To ArvickHero: I'm quite mad about this situation as well, but realize that MBC is one of 'big 3' television channels in Korea, but making the least profit. It's all about $$$, and if they think music would do better than game, then fuck everyone else's situation, they're going to change the channel without any compensation.
I don't even know if you follow BW or not after reading this post. I don't even know where to begin with this, so I'll tackle one.
There has been posts, views, and even few confirmations around couple of Korean sites in the past that this was due to financial problems. YES, broadcasting stations are about making good shit. But it's because making good shit -> more people watching -> better advertisements, charge more in the future -> profit.
From business perspective, it's all about money. You can make great stuff and gather fans, but that will end up with more profit. In the end, all people care about is how they're going to earn more $$$, and try something else if they aren't making enough. This is such case.

Haha that's more or less what I said when the cartoon was posted on TL ! I just can't believe right now that amongst those hundreds of thousands of fans in the last 10 years there isn't at least one who became a multimillionaire and throws a few 100k$ to run an extra MSL or even save MBCGame. As far as I know, they were not making profit, but it wasn't like millions of losses either.
I'd do it. My wife would be mad at me, but I'd do it, and even ask to call it the "Team Liquid MSL". Fuck yeah. Just need to be a millionaire now

Kinda following since WCG 2006 =). "But it's because making good shit -> more people watching -> better advertisements, charge more in the future -> profit." - ok, that what I was saying. So, MBC had choice: either make their product better (rethink) or shutdown a channel. They decide to shutdown.

Getting sponsor takes work, and even then, they would have to set the venues, give out prizes etc. Honestly, if the people who were in charge of MBCgame (the upper ones, not the ones who worked IN MBCgame. In this case, MBC+ media) thought about the people who cared about the channel, do you think we would not have had 'last' MSL?

Daum OSL?
Wasn't around when daum osl is played.
He means that ggplay vs iris was the Daum OSL finals matchup. Of course, this gave birth to the term pulling a GGplay, which is a reverse-sweep. That final game, especially, was so amazing.

the even sadder thing is that no one seems to care that MBCGame is dying, because no one is saying that it is. all they are saying is that MBCMusic is coming 1st Feb, but didn't state that it's at the cost of MBCGame. not that anyone seems to care about MBCGame at all anyway. it's the sad truth, but MBCGame seemed to be catering to a niche group of consumers. really sad.

It's pointless to make such comparisons anyway. Throughout all these years, both have experienced spectacular successes, as well as disappointments. It's dumb to take one series and try to make it seem representative of the entire decade. For every Daum OSL (although I personally loved Incruit and Jin Air more; forgive my protoss bias :3), there was a GomTV MSL S1. Likewise, for every NATE MSL, there was a... NATE OSL (how appropriate lol). It's the players that make the games, not the leagues themselves. It just sucks dick now that they only have half the number of opportunities to do so now T__T

The management screwed it up, blamed the stagnation on the "dying scene," then closed the channel without really taking a good look at where they could have changed things :/
i think moving from coex to loox is probably a major factor why mbcgame is dead. why risk building a new studio in an undeveloped mall in the middle of no where? (and to this day, i think there are literally no shops there, still).

wtf are all these noobs replying to this comment saying I should be more grateful, when others have clearly already outlined for me why BW fans all around have a right to be angry because of MBC's shady shit? DID YOU EVEN BOTHER READING THIS THREAD BEFORE YOU DECIDED TO HIT POST?
I'm grateful for MBCGame, and all its good memories and times it has given me. I hate MBC for not even giving MBCGame and MSL a proper ending, to have it end on such a humiliating, derogatory note. So fuck you MBC.

ohohohoho sensitive huh? So replying to your accusations is now overly sensitive? Manning up? How I view it, defending my views about something I am impassioned about just about fits the definition of manning up. So what exactly are you trying to get here? If I just abandon my view and simply agree with you here, would you then say I'm quite thick-skinned and manly enough?
What is there to do but move on? That is already obvious. I am grateful of the good times to MBCGame. And to pull the plug on BW when it was showing signs of resurgence is pretty much like it getting pissed on the face, probably worse but we'll stick to that metaphor I suppose. Not to mention how the loyal employees of the company getting the short end of the stick for sticking it out ..
Just because you've been a "SC fan" for such and such time, who cares? I've been a Nintendo fan since '98 too, and I probably wouldn't get very inflamed if they were suddenly announced that they were going to become a car company. But I would understand those who would, because it is something they've truly loved. To you, BW is just a game that you like a lot. But to me, BW is something I've truly, truly loved, along with the entire pro-scene, and has been a very big part of my life. My priorities might be fucked up, but to me BW and the internet are pretty damned close in terms of importance. So don't tell me not to be angry, or to essentially shut up. Don't tell the passionate fans of the game and scene not to be angry, because they have every right to be.

Are you really that rude and inconsiderate? After everything they have done for BW, you want them to fail in their new pursuit? Very unsympathetic.
Is it wrong for me to still be incredibly angry for MBC to basically piss on BW's face?
You should be grateful MBC gave you a star league to began with rather then ranting about it. Also, please explain how they "pissed" on BWs face when they hosted SC star leagues for years on end? lol comments like these are why I don't bother leaving posts on TL anymore, too many immature kids and overreactions.
wtf are all these noobs replying to this comment saying I should be more grateful, when others have clearly already outlined for me why BW fans all around have a right to be angry because of MBC's shady shit? DID YOU EVEN BOTHER READING THIS THREAD BEFORE YOU DECIDED TO HIT POST?
I'm grateful for MBCGame, and all its good memories and times it has given me. I hate MBC for not even giving MBCGame and MSL a proper ending, to have it end on such a humiliating, derogatory note. So fuck you MBC.
You know SOPA and all those other bills ready to choke the life out of the internet? I suppose if they'd pass and brought about the complete castration and crippling of the internet, you'd be "that guy" saying that we should just thank the US government for bringing about the internet and smile, instead of being horrified and angered at how they've killed the greatest invention of this era.
lol, your a bit sensitive and need to man up a bit.
I did read the thread and also your comment. It's one thing to say, "I'm going to miss the network" and it's another thing saying "basically piss on Brood Wars face". All I said was regardless of their decision be grateful for those good times and move on. I've been a SC fan since I found the demo CD in a computer gaming world magazine in 1998 so if anybody misses anything StarCraft related it would be me. Also, don't put words in my mouth as the internet and StarCraft are two completely different things. The internet has endless purposes, whereas StarCraft has two (Entertainment and Competition).
Take a hint then take a hike, Being condescending does not make you right.
Oh, that rhymes, cool. Seriously though, if you don't leave posts because of rants like this, just why did you post? For an insult? That doesn't actually portray you as a mature person. He's angry because the station basically fired all its employees without any compensation once the venture isn't as profitable as expected, despite the employees showing loyalty to the company. Not to mention MBC basically made a quick decision to scrap the channel (The preliminary groups of MST were played; there was suppose to be at least one more MSL, then bam it's gone) then had the galls to make their employees (to which they are firing) make one last show. What? If that isn't an insult, I don't know what is.

Couldn't agree more that MBC sudden change of plan is unjustifiable, they could have at least try to absorb some of the mbc game channel producers and staff in to mbc music . But they didn't this only made the great impression I had for them during the existence of mbc game finally drop to the level of nothing .
so sad,im only 12 and the last 2 years of my life are ripped from me.when i 1st started playing SC(BW)i saw something about progaming and i was watching mbc 24h a day.T_T i hope MBCmusic FAILS hard and die....Farewell MBC
the only real way i can forgive MBC for this is if there is another massive scandal happening. but that is a much worse reality than just MBC execs being idiots. since i do think BW will die completely if there is another scandal on the level of the matchfixing one.

its bad for eSports in general.
A whole gaming channel went down, replaced by k-pop groups formed by 8 artificially modified korean chicks who don't know how to sing but thats okay because you can adjust it on teh softwares.
Well that seems bad for the Korean image outside Korea. People can sympatize with progamers, but they will think kpop is ridiculous, oh well ... No megaupload, no filesonic and soon just dota/lol/american sc2 streams will be left (that are subpar to korean streams) =( 2012 have been a sad year for me

Sorry, it was too long to fit here. But in tl;dr mode, it pretty much slows down or prevents the Korean eSports scene (the whole scene) from expanding. It's current state is not so good either due to BW/SC2 fans splitting up and the recent match fixing incident. We have one less broadcasting station to help Korean eSport to grow in the near future.

nooooo I can't believe I won't be able to hear such passionate commentaries any more .... especially in the avalon msl where bisu v iris were fighting each other . MBC commentator really can hype the in game situation and made me go nut's at all the action that is happening on screen .
Guys we are all upset but why be angry when you can keep the memories alive? It's sad but you guys are all gonna remember how amazing MSL was don't get upset be grateful for everything you've been through with MBCgame.

What is hard to understand? The reason a corporation has to think twice about doing something like this is that people will get mad and will buy less of their products etc. I can go into a spiel about this (and indeed I just deleted one), but I really think this explanation will suffice for you. Business is not some computer that doesn't know what it's doing, it's real people making decisions about other real people and you're allowed to be less willing to interact with a business if they're a bunch of douches, and if they're really douche you can even tell your friends to do the same

Do you really think they would do this if the ratings were stellar?Nope. It's not about "oh no our 300 viewers are going to tell their friends to stop watching".They want to cater to a broader audience turning the channel into something more interesting to the public eye, they didn't mean to be "douches",they meant to make money, and in business of making money there isn't "good" and "evil",there is profitable and not profitable,I never called it a computer, but you're kinda right when you called it one,it probably calculated the risks of changing,I'm pretty sure a station like MBC doesn't care when they're turning a gaming channel into a music channel because the audiences are going to be distinct.
Damnit! I hate coming into things late in their life... Only got to watch a few MSLs and then they shut down, now I get to watch no more. At least some of the commentators are coming to OGN so you can hear some of their commentaries still. No more MSL really sucks, wish that I found teamliquid sooner
Wow, I remember going to watch games when they were at COEX. The tiny studio FULL of sweaty people for every game, people lined up outside trying to get in and some resorting to sitting and watching the players on the big screen TV outside the studio, in the middle of the mall. Those were good times. <3 BW, <3 MBCgame.
