Someone from OGN says that the next OSL should start in early 2012. There are 2 sponsors who are currently working on the details of the size and scope of sponsorship, and once that concludes, the new season should start.

2 sponsors? Nice! Hopefully this means they can expand the scope of the OSL to compensate for the loss of the MSL? I'm thinking televised preliminaries and maybe turning some Bo3's into Bo5's so we get more games. Ok I'm getting way too far ahead of myself. As long as they get rid of that myOSL garbage I'll be pleased.
Wait, what am I saying? It's the fucking OSL! I'll be happy no matter what incarnation it comes back in.

They could get rid of split Bo3's and Bo5's. That would save some air time together with reduced PL format, and maybe they could create some sort of lower league like Champions League & UEFA Cup (or whatever it's called now) or Code S & Code A in GSL. Maybe there would be no prizes (unless sponsorship allows otherwise), but OSL slots/simple exposure as a player? This would give lower tier players more air time, helping them get over their nervousness when playing televised games.

Why would you want to split the leagues? If you do, than you don't have people like jangbi who come out of the prelims and go on to win the entire thing. I hope they keep it the same, and they delay one of the sponsors so we don't have to wait or the second osl of 2012.

I've had a terrible day today. I'm currently in an awfully crowded metro on the way home, and reading this makes me so happy. More than one sponsor ? Time to resurrect MSL on OGN. They already got Lee Seung Won.
Thanks csheep for saving my day. Thanks sponsors for giving us more OSL !
As a Bisu admirer it hurts my soul that there's no MSL. Even if he never would have won another, which seems like the most likely position right now, I still hoped to one day see him make a deep run. Plus now if Flash or Jaedong wins the record-breaking fourth OSL it'll feel a bit less special since they had no MSL to prepare for and a much less stressful Proleague format.

Then again, everyone else is also preparing for OSL like mad men, so the competition is going to be stronger than ever.
Great news, having OSL at the beginning of new year would be awesome, but if it starts later, I won't complain. As long as Jangbi/Stork wins gold in it.

I meant something like a lower league for people who didn't qualify for Ro16. Maybe comprised of people who almost qualified in the prelims and those who dropped out of OSL in Ro32?

Btw I love how Jaedong isn't one of the top-favourites to win this, will make his victory just that much better. You know how them story lines work! BELIEVE
Man, if theyve got two sponsors for the OSL they should convince one of them to sponsor T8. I hope it's Korean Airlines again!! They had an awesome OSL.

It costs a LOT more to sponsor a team than it does a single tournament. But perhaps if things continue to go well, companies will be more likely to invest in the industry overall. I have little doubt the success of Jin Air contributed to this time's interest, so as long as we can maintain a strong momentum, surely someone will pick up T8. I like Korean Air, but I think it would be good to see some new blood interested in BW.
But anyway, fuck yeah OSL! I'm still sad that it didn't start in November like they said it would, so I could catch a couple of rounds in person, but oh well. As long as its happening. Bisu vs Jaedong finals please :3
I really wouldn't mind it if they made some form of "B Team" individual league. The practice partners definitely need some exposure if they ever want to get better.

Come on. The two finals he lost were two of the best over the past 4 years, and even the one he blew the doors off of stork was entertaining in a way. Fantasy makes for good finals, and I wouldn't mind seeing any of the dragons back in the finals (except free).

I always wondered why there are no 256x256 maps? Were there any such maps in the history of progaming?
Probably because they're too large, great travelling distance between bases would considerable diminish strength of pushes and favor defensive play .
The biggest map I can find on TLPD is Proving Grounds, back from 2000-2001. It's a 4 player 192x192, and despite the size/rush distance it would be all but unplayable in today's metagame.
Oh mannn. Baby's on fire this season. It'd be awesome to see him in semifinal or win the whole thing. Or a Flash/JD final in a battle for the fourth OSL.
Epic.
Although Bisu winning would be awesome, I doubt another toss will win this one. Sorry Bisutopia residents
Seriously.... who can beat Flash nowadays? I know every time a player is over dominant it's hard for the spectators to believe he can be defeated one day. I remember watching iloveoov and wondered if anyone could ever win a bo3 against him (until julyzerg); same with Savior when he was at the top of his career, the guy seemed invincible. And then Jaedong... But Flash is the n°1 for so long now, who the fuck can beat his ass??!! whooooooo?

Jaedong? Jangbi? Fantasy? Plenty of people can beat him, they just need balls and perfect games.
Modesty could have beat Flash this week if he hadn't run his army away from Flash's army and attacked with his lings and lurkers, followed by scourge. Light cheesed him because he presumably didn't dare play a standard game and Horangee and Jaehoon seemingly forgot to make any tech units.
He's not unbeatable, people just need to grow some balls.
My predictions: Jaedong gets knocked out of the Round of 16 again. Effort, FlaSh, Bisu, Jangbi as the Semifinals with FlaSh vs Jangbi rematch, Effort vs Bisu. FlaSh vs whoever and then he 3-0 :D
Yeah with flash's writs fine now I dont see him losing when he gets past ro16. Nobody beats him in a BoX right now. Even Jangbi. Only way flash is gonna get knocked out is with a group stage cheese and/or TvTs. I think stats will do well too but will fail to a lesser player or jaedong in the ro8.

Flash is pretty awesome dude. Jangbi's victory was clearly a miraculous happening, and he also beat Flash at about 80% prior to his surgery. Not taking anything away from Jangbang, but facts are facts.
Furthermore, Flash is certainly beatable, but it's incredibly hard to beat him in a "Best Of" series. Also, I don't see him getting knocked out of the Ro16 with the way he's playing right now. I don't think Modesty could've beaten Flash.
I'm going to make my official prediction to be Effort, just because I honestly think this OSL will go to a Zerg, and I don't think Hydra will take it or JD.

Who would have thought JangBi would beat Flash, after being down a game in a Bo3? How about him dropping games to Kal, and Hyuk? Him getting eliminated by Classic and Ssak, of all people?
How about Jaedong losing to Hogil, Hydra, Hyvaa, Hyuk, and HiyA (are you noticing a pattern here?)
There is one man, however... one man who lost but one game, last OSL. He was eliminated, sure... but he's taken steps to improve his play. He's joined the team of guy who knocked him out, that he might better practice against him and be more prepared. Sure teamkills are a little crazy, but it won't stop him. No sir.

uuhh... he had a surgery? how much more fact do you want? he just said 80% for the heck of it, hell he probably wasnt playing at half his ability but you guys would go butthurt and attack him thats why he was being modest with his 80%. definitely facts are facts, and having a damn surgery is as fact as fact can get that he wasnt at 100% condition. 99%, 80%, 50% who the fck cares.

No, Modesty could have beaten Flash if he wasn't afraid of losing. He had a superior army, superior position and all he needed were some balls. But he was afraid of losing and lost because of it. Ironic, or something.
Even Flash knew the position he was in was a bit perilous.

Honestly if Calm can get back to way it was in 2009, then I would be cheering for him to take the Zerg throne. His ZvT play was very smart and brilliant.

If only.. If only. His play is always smart and brilliant, he's just not the same player he was. Man, it would be a great day if Calm were top zerg. But I don't see it. Hydra is quickly seizing jaedong's throne, like it or not, with effort his biggest competition, and Baby Dong (Killer) emerging as a potential #1 Zerg. As far as this individual league, I see a zerg winning, probably effort, or Hydra.
This will be my first OSL as a BW fan. I came to SC via SC2, and I have read up on the history and watched alot of replays, but never followed along an OSL live. I'm really looking forward to it.
i personally would be most content if leta or baby will take the osl saying jaedong is kind of obvious so i'll stick to the players that are less of an option deserving players doesnt make sense cause who ever won it is the most deserving period still leta and baby for the terran race . soulkey or effort for zergs . i want to say shy but lets be serious so i'll go with stats or violet (that is if violet will play this osl ) regardless any player from ace reaching as far as he can would just make me happy (fbh anyone?) as long as its not kal since he'll just reach his usual semi final and lose to flash/jaedong 3-0
Zero vs Soulkey finals, culminating in a game 5 where both build up enormous Muta/Queen armies yet miss each other on the map and end up wiping out all of each other's tech in a base trade. They then meet up in the middle in a huge engagement where all the mutalisks on both sides are dead. With only drones and queens left, it comes down to an intense broodling micro competition that Zero just barely manages to win, leaving him with one drone left to slowly eliminate all the other buildings. Soulkey types "well i was still a better child gg"

I am wishing for a Royal Roader. At the height of the Golden Age (the magical period before the calamity that was match-fixing), there was none other than the Revolutionist and Tyrant (and Scholar Terran) who have walked down this path. Later on, they have developed to ascend as the Heavenly Kings. You want someone of stellar plays that impresses the crowd and charisma, someone who actually follow the hype. So for Brood War to make an revival, there need to be some one to completely take the scene by storm So ladies and gentlemen, which of the youngsters out there are you hoping to win the OSL?

It's quite embarrassing how the OSL is right now. Last year we saw the same thing, people posting and wondering "Where is the OSL" with no answers (ultimately we only had one OSL that entire year!). It's unprofessional, and a clear sign of the present scene utterly collapsing. Do you think you'd see posts "When is the Tennis US Open this year?". No, all four tournaments are scheduled, and it is quite clear with no room for misinterpretation. We almost had this for Broodwar for a long time. For a few years there was an OSL every 4 months like clockwork. Now? Individual leagues are nonexistent.
Now even Korean fans have to scratch their heads, wondering when it is. "Early 2012" is all they can say. I hate to bring up SC2, but you can respect GomTV for their scheduling of SC2. OGN has done a fantastic job with proleague given the MBCGame closure, and on this front they should be pleased. However, on the OSL side they have clearly failed - going from one tournament every four months to one in a year and now simply "early 2012". Failure and shame is the new name of the OSL (read: not OGN as a whole, since SPL is proceeding nicely).
Our scene has fallen so much. What other sport has a giant "?" for its tournaments? 3 years ago we had SPL, MSL, OSL, and even a GomTV tournament (albeit with several teams not participating). Today, we have SPL.

Bah.
I can't remember the last time that OGN actually set a fixed schedule for OSL. They never start in a particular month or anything.
And the reason why the last one took so long to get started was because OSL did the bullshit MyStarleague thing that delayed it for such a long time.
Honestly though, the loss of MSL is a pretty big blow to the BW scene.
I wonder how much it costs to sponsor an OSL. Im pretty sure there is enough BW fans where if we pitched in $10 per person we could raise enough to sponsor one ourselves.
as much as i dislike waiting for this OSL I think/hope that Jd uses this time to get more comfortable with his training partners and have some efficient practice time.

i guess early 2012 refers to Q1 2012. i saw above that it's possible to have only one OSL in 2012. Are the teams / players actually interested to play in only 1 osl and proleague per yer? that seems like a very limited number of games

Yeah, let's blame the Korean translators who took the time to translate an actual article from dailyesports, while still waiting for OSL to begin themselves.

I think that they need some King of the Hill weekly tournaments for SC because OSL is only interesting at the very top of the stage unlike MSL.

I think they need to allow interesting games to happen. A proleague with new maps sure, but also a "best of map history" format.
Just FYI, OGN didn't annouce anything related to OSL recently. As GTR mentioned, LoL invitational is in progress and actually it scheduled on 7:00PM every Friday night, which this schedule was supposed to be positioned for OSL traditionally.
I don't know much of this details about OSL right now, but according to this article, OGN and RiotGames annouced there is going to be huge LoL tornament with $240,000 pricepool, 4 times on this year, starting at March when LoL invitational is over and it will be scheduled at the OGN primetime spot. I assume the time would be like 7:00PM Friday night.
I would say carefully that the fate of new OSL is very unclear. Hope they're releasing official announcement from OGN, about the delaying issues of OSL.

I think we need a grudge match format where if players are able to advance through the current round, they are able to choose the opponent they will face the next one (assuming that the said opponents have made it out too). The chosen one can either accept the challenge or they can decline it if the chosen player have already made a deal to play with another person. If he hasn't, then declining the challenge is not an option. This brings us more "prepared" games and psychological warfare.
The map pool should really be determined by the players themselves instead of being forced to play on them. They should broadcast the map selection by the players as a conference. Not only will that offer any strategical hints but also show their interactions to the audience which the MSL did best with their Group Selection.

I'm actually impartial to LOL scene, if it turns out well props to the OGN because Starcraft has been their one-top for far too long (but not SC2 because it pisses me off), and It'll take serious persuading to convince me OSL is being abandoned because that makes no sense business-wise. However I also agree some definitive date would be good, as with everyone =/
The bump down to best of 5 for PL and now OSL and MSL being gone is giving me BW withdrawals. This is simply not enough BW. Must be a nice rest for the players though.

I have the "not enough BW" syndrome too.. im afraid..
Where is the OSL really? Ok, they shut down MBC and we have no MSL. Ok, we still have OSL... But we have not! Where is it? Last OSL finished half of a year ago.
I think there are some people in korean e-sport organisation who want BW to stay but they do nothing except new proleague. What they are thinking about? Half a year more and we can lose BW forever if there will be no individual tournament...
we need more bw for sure. i really wanted to watch osl live for the first time. i dont get why they arent doing it, bw is still very popular in korea, you can make a lot of $$$.
Early 2012 probably means Q1 2012 which means some time in the first 3 months of 2012.. So.. Januar February and March. So probably some time next couple of weeks IF is true.. Who knows maybe all fallen down , all sponsors gone and everything is in recycle bin and thats why no news nothing.. everyone has vanished..

Isn't that contradictory to the OP? Did the companies back out?
Why do you believe the OP so much?
DES/Fomos releases stuff about "potential sponsors" all the time. Don't you remember Team 8? When DES/Fomos started talking about how a major corporation was possibly sponsoring team 8, by that point it was just pure PR cause by that point it was going to be KeSPA operated
just some perspective on things related to the shit you read
des/fomos is the only perspective some of us have. I was surprised when I saw the initial statement, but when they use language as definite as "two companies have agreed to sponsor" I kind of have to take that as fact considering I haven't heard anything from anywhere else.
Sad to say, this is hardly surprising at all. If you look at the scene right now, the big message getting across is obviously that BW is out the door either this season or next. That's hardly an incentive to potential investors who will probably have to wait a long time to see any ROI from sponsorship. The problem is that while everybody's waiting around for a positive sign, they're not putting in the dollars needed to sustain the scene enough. The whole thing just collapses on itself.
I thought the biggest sign was Shinhan pulling out of proleague sponsorship. That to me is a huge signal that BW is just not a viable investment anymore. On the other hand, SK has a huge stake in BW so I am not surprised that they're taking over the PL reigns, but the sum of it all is one major sponsor out of the race, which only contributes further to an atmosphere of decline.
In Korea, things have a habit of dying out swiftly and fiercely once they're regarded as losing popularity. I'll be very surprised if an outside company has the balls to step up and try to revitalize the scene. If it does come back, it'll most likely be a current sponsor doing it.

I don't care if it's the only perspective you guys have, but you guys should take everything they say with a grain of salt.
Furthermore... the article was literally last year. The comment said "As soon as we set the scope of the sponsorship we can start immediately".
It doesn't take 3 months. It's most probable that sponsors didn't think OSL would cost so much :p
If by "take it with a grain of salt" you mean to have an open mind about things, I would say I was doing that in asking for clarification rather than simply announcing you were wrong. If by "take it with a grain of salt" you mean don't believe anything you read from these sites until you see cooperating evidence, well that's a luxury I don't have. The earliest I can know anything about Korean starcraft more definitely than what some guy tells me on the internet (be he from fomos or TL), is when I watch the stream and see it for myself.

Shinhan had a 3 year contract to sponsor Proleague IIRC. It wasn't that they decided to sponsor it for 3 years and then quit.
source?
cause shinhan def didnt want to sponsor last year and took a lot of goading and made conditions.
In 2007 Shinhan made a 3-year contract with KeSPA. In 2010~2011 season Shinhan decided to sponsor for one more year (Don't know the details of the talk, so don't bait me into such thing).

There was some significant back and forth between shinhan and kespa to sponsor 2010-2011, mostly due to the IP rights fiasco

Sorry to burst the bubble, but they will switch, or at least run both leagues, in the near future given the hardware changes and everything.
Yes, OSL > Any SC2 league, but realistically they wouldn't have changed the equipment in the studios if they didn't want to switch over.

Realistically: Something will happen sooner or later. I just don't know when it will hit, but something will happen. Haven's sake, if they do the weird-ass format for Season 2 that I've read somewhere, I might even throw up (now THAT'S probably not going to happen).

It doesn't have much to do with BW, actually. OSL sponsorships are just a money-sink, and companies can't afford it in this economy. The amount of people watching BW in Korea seems to be stable or growing (from looking at live audiences, anyway) but it's still probably not a large enough viewership to justify what amounts to a big, 3-month ad campaign.
