As far as playing goes, if you are a newbie, the best place for you to go is iCCup. The server itself has been dying a lot in the past year after some management mishaps, but overall can aid you in your every need as a newbie. Once you get your skills up, USWest and all Korean servers likeFish] and BrainClan are very good.
How many people are on west compared to Iccup, West isn't rank is it?

Other commentators that, while no longer active, may be worth checking out. Searching for any of these should get you their youtube channels. Keep in mind, a lot of the older vods are from the days when youtube had a 10 min (later 15 min) limit on all video's, so they'll be split into multiple parts. At this point, commentary is the best way to learn about the game from a spectator's perspective, so I'd recommend finding a few you like and going to town, before November rolls around the next season starts.
CholeraSC - In my opinion, the best english commentator ever. Funny, knowledgeable, and a genuine pleasure to listen too. I first got into BW by watching a huge portion of his archive. Stopped casting around the end of 2009, right when i discovered him.
RanshinDA - Very silly commentator, who covered the MSL when Nuke was covering the OSL. Stopped in early 2011. Never my favorite, but he has commentary on a lot of recent matches.
Moletrap - Yes, that moletrap. His BW youtube channel is filled with commentaries, which he ceased doing around the time GOM first hired him. Once you start watching BW live, you'll notice he still goes to a TON of tournaments over there.
KlazartSC - One of the first to get into the english commentary game - meaning the video quality of his vods was never the best. While his knowledge of the game was never top notch, he was better than almost anyone else at displaying the same sort of excitement and enthuaism as Korean commentators.
Violetak - Did some commentary WAY back in the day, and frankly I've never heard them. However, he quit the game and donated his director account to the community for dual and triple commentaries. You will find commentaries of many proleague matches here, as well as the legendary Stork v GGPlay, a PvZ that goes almost an hour and a half and features every P and Z unit in the game besides scouts, commentated by Moletrap and Combat-Ex (yeah, he's from BW too...).
Day[9] - Yup, him too. probably the best analytic commentator ever - back in his BW days he was MUCH more focused on analysis and teaching than on being goofy. Check out his early daily's (on the Blip.tv accout, but you need to scroll WAY back), as well as the hillarious Bo5 grudgematch he commentated between Chill and Combat-Ex.
Other Active Commentators
DejaVu119 - Semi active, commentates random games. A very entertaining commentator, he reminds me a lot of Klazart in the same way that Nuke reminds me a lot of Cholera. With Sc2GGVorosh, he took up commentating the MSL when RanshinDA stepped down, though with the MSL likely ending it's uncertain what he'll be doing anymore. Also does live commentary of PL matches occassionally on eton's stream.
Sc2GGVorosh - Newer commentator, and one whom I've not listened to much. Still, I've liked what I've heard, and if he decides to commentate PL matches once it starts up again I'll probably follow him. Does a little bit of Sc2 commentary too.
Sayle - The premier foreign commentator - you can see him streaming almost every weekend covering foreign events. Hilarious, and pretty knowledgeable about the game as well. He doesn't youtube, his archives are on his Twitch.tv account.
Hope this helps.
EDIT - Added info about a few active commentators.

If you go on liquipedia on either the OSL or MSL page you get a link to the R&S page for each one, which then has links to youtube for every game played! The older ones dont have that but from 2007 and up, you will find all the games there. Some of the older VODs are still available but will require some browsing on Nevakes channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/nevake). Just search for the event you want to see and enjoy epic series like Boxer vs Oov at EVER2004!

Check out the Small VOD Thread, motkira, r3z3nd3 and other AWESOME fellows make that thread the BEST THREAD on TL ever. Its a thread with the VODs of many (if not almost all) proleague/starleague games, including the very recent ones.
Huge shoutout to the people keeping the Small Vod Thread at its finest! WE LOVE YOU!
There is also MBC Bnet Attack Returns thread, yet another BEST THREAD on TL ever, checkout that one for pro FPVODs. Huge shoutout to Ryo! WE LOVE YOU!
Seems like November the next season will kick off, check out the restreams of GTR, nanashin, Kiante and many other AWESOME people restreaming OSL's, MSL's, PL's and many other events

Found a link to most of his BW episodes here.

i liked Husky in BW. although it was mostly for his off the wall humor.

This is nice, I'm an appreciator of both games too, and its great to see people who never played before getting into bw through sc2.
I can sort of relate too because although I played bw on and off pretty much since it was released to till around 2007 I only really became interested in competitive starcraft after sc2. the most I ever cared about for bw was watching some epic vods that other people had recommended on youtube. While I appreciated their skill I didn't try follow the players because nothing was in english. Now with sc2 and I know how the scene is/was I wish I had.
Anyway, there needs to be more people like you who like both games, too often I see elitists from both sides, and they are both in the wrong.

FYI - Sayle is casting the ISL semi's RIGHT now. Tune in, foreigner PvZ is always entertaining.

Thread should be retitled OSL/MSL Info Thread and stickied. The love this dude received is absolutely overwhelming and needs to be shared with all prospective BW fans.

I share the sentiments Of the OP I'm an SC2 guy who has just recently got into BW but the pain is even more severe as before SC1 vanilla came out I played the demo and loved every second of it, I literally played the game to death however at the time I was just about to turn 9 and had no income and was unable to get the game. When I had the means it was too late as It had already slipped out of my mind as I had got a PS1 for my birthday. If only I had paid more attention or remembered the game at the time I may have been able to jump in right at the start

to add to some of the suggestions above for foreign castors
current: nukethestars for some awesome hype and osl casts, pay special attention to the fun with bork playlist1
sayle for the music, LISTEN TO HIS MUSIC
Past: too many, here is what you need to focus on 2008 OSL Finals in the epic cast of moletrap/klazart/cholera, including the pre/post game commentary
cholera: any game with reach and zergbong
moletrap: the nuke is going to land on his army
klazart: his savior games, notice his voice gets faster but the volume gets lower with each game...once you find out why, your evolution is complete
day9: to improve game play, dont let his current sc2 daily fool you, his bw casts were considered unrivaled for entertainment and for noobs gett better

Ahw, I hope this doesn't sound condescending but I just had a flash back to when I was liek 4 and played starcraft Frigging awesome, I recommend reading R&S threads, Moktira made an undescriably awesome thread which included all of the MSL games (except a few, but still, Moktira can only be human right?)

My advice is find a player you like and watch all their VODs from any given OSL/MSL/proleague in order. It is very rewarding following a player and watching them grow and fall.
Any S class player is worth doing that for. My personal favorites from each race are Jaedong, Stork, and BoxeR.
EDIT : TLPD is your friend you can generate custom lists of games for easy viewing, most games have VODs and battle reports too if available. Very valuable resource.

God, it's so funny watching Cholera commentate Zergbong. How that thing became the best sc2 player is beyond me.

When R1CH gets around to it, it may be possible to access all of the old news reports about BW from late 2002 to the present in a convenient list. Until then, try using archive.org to look for older versions of teamliquid.net

Wow, op just may have started Brood War 101
