I think this is the beginning of the end of Brood War.
Three small time sponsors have already pulled out of sponsoring professional gaming, including:
- MBC - Because they see it more worth while to turn MBCGame into a music television channel, and thus see no more need to sponsor MBCGame Hero.
- Hwaseung - Pretty big national corporation in South Korea. This is pretty bad news because Hwaseung Oz was a pretty good team with a few prolague victories.
- WeMade Entertainment - Game developer best known for one 2D MMORPG series with graphics equivalent to Diablo 2. Probably disbanded WeMadeFOX because they didn't see quite as much profit in ESPORTS anymore, which is an absolute shame because while they had a crap SC1 record, they were apparently quite good in other games like Counter-Strike and WC3, plus they will lose great WC3/SC2 players like Moon.
Who's going to pull out of Brood War next?
Samsung? Seeing as WCG are no longer supporting Starcraft: Brood War and hammering the final nail in the coffin for the international Brood War scene, and because they were a huge sponsor of WCG.
SK Telecom? Not that likely seeing as they've got one of the strongest teams ever. But surely building 1gbps networks across your country has to take a strain on your ESPORTS funding?
CJ Corporation? Unlikely. You don't see them falling on hard times plus they have one of the strongest teams in the BW scene.

If Jaedong retires from BW, I can definitely see him trying his hand at SC2 like several others who've gone before him. I just can't see him as someone that won't continue his pro-gaming career on some level or another. He's just too talented for that.

Not too long ago that means. BW is still going strong in that aspect... Maybe people should of pulled a Tasteless and asked the fans to Tweet at the sponsors so they know all the support they are getting? I doubt Pepsi will be dropping GSL as a sponsor for some time now because of that.
Wouldn't switching to SC2 reduce the chance of Carpal Tunnel because it is less APM intensive?

Noooooooo! 3 teams disbanding and MBC shutting down; I don't know if BW can survive this crisis. BW has been a huge part of my life for the last couple of years, I would be incredibly sad if it died.
Also, the notion that Flash destroyed BW is dumb as fuck.
|
No, no, noooooooooooooooooo!!!
It can't end. It can't end yet. Someone please sponsor a team just to keep the scene alive.
|
How does this happen? We hear every day that bw is doing well in korea and Flash just got a pay raise but the teams just keep disappearing everything is falling apart. TT
|
Honestly I think MSL shutting down is the bigger problem. At this point BW seems to be the opposite of SC2 in that there simply aren't many games to watch.

This is starting to be really painful. I can't believe all these Brood War teams are going under....

Most of his interviews talk about him wanting to devote himself to studying so I'm not seeing the logic in dedicating himself to yet another video game. While he's here and the money is good, it's solid, but his interviews suggest he (or maybe just his parents) want more for his life. I would think this is the end for JD progaming if he doesn't get picked up by another team, and maybe even the end if he's just frustrated by the process and sees this as a good time to devote himself to a career.
(I'm a big JD fan but that's why I read his interviews too )

If he studies in the US I can see him getting lured onto a foreign SC2 team, if he studies in Korea he'll probably actually study.

will any of these guys make the jump to sc2? or am i just dreaming?

sad day. First MBC, then Fox, now Oz. Hope Broodwar can survive this. Watching the most recent SPL finals was so epic. It feels like we are watching the end of an era. If nothing else, it was amazing while it lasted.

Now that would be truly imba In all seriousness, it would be better if teams other than SKT1 grabbed the best members of the disbanding teams so that while there are less teams, we can at least have a few serious contenders for the team league.
Really disappointing seeing the collapse of these teams.

For those saying that these players should jump ship to SC2, there's simply not enough money yet in the Korean SC2 scene. Look at the reported salaries of Flash and Jaedong, then look at the (usually non-existent) salaries and prize pool available in SC2.
If these BW giants were to switch to SC2, this absolutely needs to be coupled with an expansion in viewership and revenue, e.g. getting OGN to prominently display SC2 and run its own tournaments. The saving grace of SC2 is that it's huge globally (just witness all the Koreans "stealing" prizes in foreign tourneys).

I believe Jaedong will not retire yet. Most probably he's heading for STX if Oz doesn't get a new sponsor.

Wow never thought it'd be Oz =(.

OT: SC2 is not less APM intensive at all - whatever gave you that idea? More effective APM will always help. It's just that when comparing BW to SC2, BW has a higher mechanics/reward ratio than SC2.
