I don't think its that easy to get a backup: booking a venue costs $, assuming they can find a suitable place. Setting things up will likely take a few days which essentially ruin people's travel plans.

Ultimately the victims are bw fans who stayed up, esp those who traveled to shanghai to catch the finals.

Kespa will likely reconsider outdoor venues in the future.

Not having a backup plan given that there was a good likelihood of the event being cancelled due to a typhoon warning issued 2 days ago IS rather incompetent.

Also, the typhoon essentially grounded all flights for the next day or so, so people who flew here specifically for the event can reschedule their flights to a later time should kespa have stayed with shanghai and held it within a few days.

But yes, the victims are the people who bought tickets, went to shanghai, and waited at the venue for hours receiving conflicting information only to go home in disappointment. Makes a terrible impression for all the chinese fans who went there, and an even worse impression for foreign fans who flew there to see it.

This.

I don't blame the gov't, but I do blame the organizers for their ineptitude in handling this situation.

You do not go ahead with a massive outdoor event in one of the most crowded metropolitan areas on the planet with a known oncoming typhoon with a high likelihood of striking with no backup plan.

There should have been a cutoff, where if an hour or two before the start, they still couldn't confirm that they could proceed, they should've just postponed it with a proper contingency. You didn't even need to outright buy a venue - just find somewhere that wasn't booked and was willing to reserve the spot for you in case the first thing didn't pan through. Outdoors or indoors, if you had something like that in place, you wouldn't have kept people up to the last minute in a will they/won't they bout of frantic stressful indecision. Announce that the finals would've been tentatively rescheduled at venue x on date y.

What a joke.

this really sucks.

the event should have been canceled days ago, before anybody showed up. we knew about the typhoon well in advance. if they were going to cancel without a drop of rain, why wait?

The Chinese government issued a warning on Thursday that they were going to cancel "all outdoor events in Shanghai", but KeSPA tried to continue on with the tournament anyway.

There is not much they can do. Here is the timeline for the typhoon. Please keep in mind that typhoon can change direction suddenly.

The earliest warning is on Thursday, or even earlier. A lot of outdoor events had already been cancelled.

News of cancellation started spreading several hours before the event on chinese sites. There was even a message at the venue telling people it was cancelled. The Korean side was rather indecisive as Kespa tried hard to keep the show going.

Finding a new place within a day's notice is already difficult enough (you cant just say "reserve your hall for us as backup" - major exhibition halls are booked months in advanced). Not to mention moving gaming booths, A/V equipment, lighting, decorations, and many other logistic challenges in a foreign country causes too much trouble.

Many outdoor concerts in the past have been cancelled because of weather, even indoor ones have faced flight delays, sudden illness, etc. This is nothing new.

There's no hall that seats a few thousand people like the original one held, that would let you just go and reserve with a day's notice. There's major waiting lists for these kind of events. The reason they held the event regardless of the code orange is because they knew that rescheduling in china was a slim to none chance.

All these people who say kespa should have had a backup plan with a second venue that, first of all, was indoor and secondly, could fit all the people who bought tickets to the first venue, should sponsor these events because it seems to me, they have endless amounts of money. You can pay for the 2 large venues, the transfer of all the booths, decorations, A/V equipment and everything else that is needed for the event.
Goal for when I go to korea: Hang out with 김택용

Damn, anyone else feel like this is going to totally negate SKT's 1st place seed advantage ? 2 weeks is a hell of a lot of time for the KT players to rest up themselves and prepare their own sniping strategies for SKT. And I feel like most SKT players will just be out of practice now having not played a real match in like over a month.

LOL When they say gymnasium, they mean the kind that the STX Cup Finals and OSL Finals are regularly held in. These seat a few thousand people. And yes, major concerts are regularly held in these gymnasiums.
