Keep any SC2 vs BW comments out of this thread. This is a thread about Brood War and Esports (Tekken Crash, Special Forces, etc) in general. If you discuss what this means for ESPORTS be sensitive about it. |
WTF is this a joke ? This is horrible. Don't know what to say Why did they do this. Is there not enough money in Esports anymore for a tv channel ? They don't even switch to another game but just abondon Esports ? The MSL maybe was just a smaller OSL, but who could forget the Bisu vs savior finals that changed BW forever This is a very sad day for BW and Esportsin general.

Having read supernovamaniac's blog here: http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=241153, it seemed that MBC's studios were located in an area that was relatively deserted and seem to be losing popular support. Hopefully OGN can keep going - this also does not bode altogether too well for Proleague as well given that MBC and OGN jointly broadcasted the matches. The Loox Center not having any tenants is not the reason why the company is contemplating such an action. Popular support also has nothing to do with why the Loox Center was a failure. Poor location and poor management.

And mainstream eSports exists still only in Korea. SC2 is global, but only within its own community.

BW will "die" eventually. It looks like it is close to the final stage, then professional Broodwar will be all history. You don't really believe a computer game would stay forever? Even if pro BW lives on for some years, it's demise is inevitable as computer technology develops very fast. Considering that BW has 4:3 graphics with just VGA resolution and is using no more than 256 colors it's strange that it is still played today, in the times of 16 1080p fancy 3D truecolor graphics. I think the best what can be done now is to integrate all the good parts of the BW pro scene into the upcoming SC2 pro scene so that the scene will live on even though the game was replaced. Personally, I don't give a shit about e-sports. I just want to watch Broodwar, so this does me zero good. We still can watch all the countless VODs. Having Korean casters talking fast and excited, screaming, the camera zooms into a player's face as he drops his storms onto the lurkers, fangirls are screaming, then the GEEE GEEEE like a catharsis.
A meaningful pro scene needs the audience to maintain it. The outstanding SC1 artwork (clear, crisp, easy to grasp, yet strangely realistic) helped that Broodwar could be broadcast for so long. But players like Jaedong make you watch the game. (Or at least, make me to watch it.) We can have the gosuness in the new game. We can have mapmakers who continue the Broodwar tradition of map artwork (which I like very much, Blizzard offered a lot of nice doodads to chose from.)
TLDR: You cannot watch pro-level BW without esports. While SC2 will be different from BW to fit the needs of the time, we could get an as exciting experience as in BW when the right steps are done.

Thus the point "there's always going to be SC2" is neither true, nor any consolation to us. Not to mention that mindlessly preaching that "there will always be SC2" is pretty bold when you're responding to news that a channel dedicated to esports is being eliminated due to a lack of commercial viability. Or do you think that MBCGame would have been saved if only it had started airing SC2? Give me a break.
It covers StarCraft, Warcraft III, FIFA Series, Counter-Strike, Winning Eleven, Age of Empires III and Dead or Alive. I mean, not just SC2, but if it covered something that isn't a little past its prime, maybe it could stay open. Granted, CS is still kinda out there, and of course there's a new FIFA every year, but for the most part the non-soccer games are very old.
A healthy mix of SC2 and BW, as well as other newer competitive games could definitely have been an option. I'm not sure it had to be a choice between SC2 and BW. They're both entertaining in their own rights.

Wow, fuck. What a shitty turn of events. Not sure if I'm more angry or sad right now.

Can you people stop reporting every post that has "SC2" in it please?
As long as there is no bashing on either game there is no reason why people should not post what this could mean for the future of SC2 and/or BW. Especially as a major game broadcaster closing would be a huge blow as well to SC2, being a niche thing in Korea.

I'm shocked. I still follow the bw scene even tho I made the switch myself to sc2. This is a sad day indeed.

Starcraft 2 single handedly brought e-sports from a terrible spot that it has been in for years now in the global sense and in under a year made the main stage for so many events it is unreal. So many SC2 tournaments play for some serious money, how it got where it is in such a short time is nothing short of a miracle.
If SC2 is a disappointment I am sorry but your expectations are completely out of this world.
That being said I believe in a world where both can coexist just fine and I dont see BW going away anytime soon.

=(
Edit: This sucks, no doubt about it... I sorta knew some troubled times were coming (August renewals) I just didn't think we would see an entire tournament get dropped. This is really going to hurt the next contract renewals.

speaking for myself:
i don't hate sc2, i hate when sc2 fanboys come into threads like this to torment the bw fanboys by posting shit like what you quoted.
only someone who isn't a fan of bw would say that, and if you're not a fan of bw you really have no reason to post in this thread.

Especially as a major game broadcaster closing would be a huge blow as well to SC2, being a niche thing in Korea. We're reporting them precisely because anyone who reads this thread before posting would understand that MBCGame dying is not good for SC2, and therefore "cya BW see u in SC2 Flash" posts demonstrate at best an inability to comprehend written language and at worst a refusal to observe common etiquette by reading a thread before responding to it. The practice of showing up in a thread to read the OP and drop a one-line reply is a cancer that I would rather not see spread into the BW forums.

This is so sad. I've spent the last 4 or 5 years following Broodwar. The first games I watched were Bisu winning the MSL. This is really depressing and just saddens me, I'm gonna miss broodwar so much when its gone. Probably gonna watch a bunch of old MSL vods tonight

With exception of the GSL1 season 1 and 2 and the TSL finale, any random unimportant Korean BW pro-match excites me more than SC2.
But it's not just about me, I think. SC2 inspires A LOT of guys who never played an RTS before. Better to have a healthy pro scene for the second-best RTS (yet) as having a very small scene for the (still) best. Quality comes through quantity, eventually SC2 can surpass BW.
Even with all the differences in the SC2 mechanics compared to BW, I don't think that BW dies now. It lives on, in a new incarnation.

Too bad, while I haven't followed BW for a few years now I had hoped it could coexist with SC2, seems that isn't the case.
Farewell MBC, thanks for a good run.
