Hoejja, “One day I will become a true ‘Koh God-min’” (T/N: This is a play on Hoejja’s Korean name Koh Kang-min, similar to the name “God Young-ho”)

Ding dong! Ding dong ding dong!

Do you all know why the door buzzer is ringing so much? It’s because after we started the Door-buzzer series, the players that we want to meet keep coming. Last time, Best picked Jangbi, who gave us candid remarks on the “Game-all-mot” (T/N: Korean acronym for something similar to “you people who don’t even know how to play”. Look at Jangbi’s interview if you want to know about it). Jangbi then picked “Lefty Zerg” Hoejja, making him the next main character, making the Fomos reporter busy to press the door buzzer for the next interview.

Hoejja is someone who could be unhappy because his record is mediocre compared to his actual skill. We know that the performances that he showed on broadcast weren’t everything that he had to offer so we waited, and waited for his victory. No matter how you pretty up the “drought of victory”, it’s probably different for the one who is thirsty.

To find out what he thinks of being called out to the Door-buzzer series, we went looking for him at the KT practice house. Let’s meet him together.

What are your feelings of being in the Door-buzzer series?
When I first saw the Door-buzzer interviews on Fomos, I thought to myself, “I don’t want to go to that”. It’s because I wanted to do an interview because I won a game, not because I was slumping. But after I started reading other players’ interviews, they were pretty fun to read. So then I thought to myself, “I guess it wouldn’t be so bad to do an interview as the last ‘King Loser’”.

Seems like you’ve accepted the title “King Loser”.

I was also similar to Jangbi in that near the beginning of my career I always lost and got the nickname “Koh-pil-pae”. Because I kept getting sent out even though I always lost, people started to think that I was the coach’s stepson and it was hard to deal with. I was really upset because I kept losing even though I practiced really hard and it was even more upsetting that I was getting a bad image because of it. But being a “King Loser” feels slightly different from when I was “Koh-pil-pae”. I have this kind of nickname because I’m still playing badly but I can feel a message of support mixed in as well. I guess I should be happy that I have my own image now? To be honest, I can always change my image if I start playing well so having interest in me and calling me “King Loser” is still attention that I am grateful for.

Why don’t we talk about a related topic and finish it before we move on? You do know of the “King Loser” webtoons as well as all the parodies of you on the internet right?
Yeah. When I see them, I feel like it’s the most attention I’ve gotten since I’ve debuted. When I first saw the “King Loser” webtoon and saw my face, I was like “Ah, do they really have to go this far” and became really serious but then as I scrolled down, I started smiling more and more. It’s too funny that I can’t laugh.

You’ve seen that you were placed as the “weird guy” in the “Guy, guy, guy” parody right? You say a strange comment in that poster (T/N: I’ve read the sentence coming out of Hoejja’s mouth in the parody and I have no idea what it means lol).
The younger players in our team wrote it in our cyworld minihomepage and I thought it was funny so I copied it onto mine too. Nothing happened for a while until I became “King Loser” and then fans started paying attention to even those kind of posts I left on my cyworld (laughs). Only TBLS gets that level of attention, and it was at that time I realized that the “King Losers” were getting a lot of interest.

You pass it off with a laugh now but it must have been hard in the beginning.

Yeah that’s right. Along with the “King Loser” stuff, I’m being called “Koh God-min” in a different kind of way from “God Young-ho”. It’s an insult. But I can let it go with a laugh. And even if I get all this attention, people aren’t necessarily hoping for me to win. Yellow hyung said once that there were many instances that during times when people weren’t paying much attention to him, he played well. I think I’m in the same situation too and I think in Rounds 5 and 6 I will be able to work my momentum.

Both Yellow and Reach once said in an interview that you were the most disappointing younger player in KT.
Most people are similar to me but when I practice, I feel like I can beat anyone I meet but then when I go on broadcast, that confidence drops all the way down to half. I’m thankful that my hyungs tell me that I have a lack of confidence and not a lack of skill. I also feel personally that my confidence is the most important thing.

I’m worried that you’ve become too comfortable with losing.
At the time when I was losing nearly every game, I think that was true. But now, I don’t even have a lot of chances of being sent out so I can’t even become familiar with losing. I only have a burning desire to win right now. I was so happy near the end of Winner’s League when I beat Jaehoon but then I lost to Sea right after that. That was the first win I had this season and losing right after that made me really angry. It’s going to sound like an excuse to my fans but I felt that I could win if we had played again. I don’t act like I’m worrying and then laugh after I lose a game. I feel really heated and want to win.

You were born in 1989 and that isn’t a young age so you must be worried about your age too.
I cannot stop myself from thinking about the military now that I got older and since I’m not playing well I start thinking of other things too. But if I was doing well, I probably wouldn’t have thought about those things. Personally, I don’t think that you become slower or lose the passion for gaming just because you get older. Best and Jangbi, who came out on the Door-buzzer too are the same age as me. But they both went to finals matches and at one time played really well in Proleague but then after not doing so well they became “King Losers” while I became a “King Loser” because I was terrible from the very beginning. But getting interest like this is something I am thankful for.

Won’t it be difficult to get sent out now that both Action and Crazy_Hydra are in your team now?
They aren’t players that are impossible to beat. I think it’d be good to think of them as healthy competition. I have confidence that I won’t fall behind. But the problem is that Action, Crazy Hydra, me and Perfective all have very similar play styles now. I don’t think the coach likes that. I think if I can get a more unique style, I will be able to get sent out more (laughs).

You are probably itching to get sent out right now.
I got first place in the map rankings for those who get sent out first. Inwardly, I was hoping to get sent out again but my name wasn’t in the entry list at all. I felt really bad. But then trusting me until I was 1 win and 8 losses is something to be thankful for. If I was a coach, I don’t think I would have been able to deal with it that long so I feel terribly sorry for my losing streak. In the past Winner’s League finals, I just sat on the bench but after seeing our team keep losing to a Zerg I really wanted to be sent out. But I haven’t shown anything yet so in Rounds 5 and 6 I want to practice hard and be able to play at the finals.

Progamers need to be able to have a competitive edge to them. I feel like you are a little lacking in that.

I am blood type A and I really am kind of timid because of that. When our teammates joke with each other sometimes they get to me. Even though I don’t show it! But I’m still on the talkative and playful side when I’m with my team. Our coach once told me that I need to put that into my game.

You said a while back that you are the same age as the other “King Losers”. Are you all friendly with each other?

I was in the same guild as Best since we were amateurs and I already knew Jangbi from before but then we became pretty close because we both like soccer. But Jangbi had the “Gaem-all-mot” incident a while back. A teammate said “this is big trouble” and I looked to see what he was talking about and the comments on Jangbi’s minihomepage were so shocking. I was worried but at the same time I grinned. I bet Best had a similar response as me. I think all progamers worried for Jangbi while at the same time having similar feelings as he did.

But it’s true that progamers suffer a lot because of indiscriminate negative comments.
Negative comments that are actually directed are worse than general comments but I see that as all attention so I’m thankful for that. A while back we were having a fan meeting when someone asked me upfront why I was so bad. I didn’t have anything to say to that. I just thought to myself that I need to play better and show them that.

Please answer Jangbi’s question to you: “When will you break the seal of your right hand?”
I first got attention because I played with my mouse in my left hand. The older teammates thought that was interesting and said to me “you’ll get really good ina short while” but now I don’t think there is any kind of differences between left-handed and right-handed progamers. There’s no difference using your left hand for progaming as there is using your left hand for eating. I’m going to solve my slump with my left hand!

Any last words.
First, I hope that all the progamers (including me) who appeared in the Door-buzzer articles will get strength from their interviews and start playing better. Individually, I want to go at Rounds 5 and 6 more forcefully and be able to go to Gwang-anri for the finals. I really am going to work hard. I used to think that I was putting a lot of effort into practice but I think that kind of thought decreased my concentration and made me lax. I really want to work hard to get out of the “King Loser” image and seriously become a “Koh God-min”.

This is the last question. Who do you pick for the next Door-buzzer interview?

I looked at Jangbi’s interview and thought that if I picked Pure then I would complete the “King Loser Chronicles”. Previously, I was going to pick HiyA but then I switched to Pure. So I pick Pure. I want to ask him a question from the last MSL Survivor Tournament when he played on Circuit Breaker where he had a draw and then lost the game right after that:

“Pure, even if I had played in your situation I would have won. What happened?”

Thanks for the translations.

What a depressing series of articles. I hope that they can indeed do better. Maybe the new zerg coach can breathe new life into Hoejja.

"Even if I had played in [Pure's] situation, I would have won."

No Hoejja, I'm afraid you might be the one other player that would have lost.

These interviews are so depressing, a little harsh, too. And then everyone keeps selecting other players that are slumping. I like the spotlight on the other players that S-classers, but when half of the questions are just the same question rephrased several times,"Why do you suck/you suck please explain/remember when you were good," I just start skimming...

Me too. He really seemed like a nice guy on Oldboy, but he never seems to be able to get a win. Of all the people on KT, he and action are pretty much the only people I root for.
