It's been mentioned in the past few weeks, but OnGameNet has tweaked their OSL qualifier format significantly. They've introduced the concept of "My Starleague" (Great wrap up post by jpak), which is basically an open qualifier for ANYONE who is not a registered progamer.
They will have several one day tournaments in most of Korea's major cities, with a few famous progamers attending each as "scouts," with the highlights from the competition being compiled and broadcast by OGN at a later date.
Yeah, it's basically 'Korean Idol: Starcraft BW.' Not terribly surprising, as the Reality Competition TV shows have just started to catch on in Korea, and this would go with the recent cultural trend. The first TV show will air on the 20th.
The first regional auditionqualifier took place last Saturday in Busan, Korea's #2 city and #1 port. Fomos reported that there were hundreds of participants, from students (OGN's minimum age requirement was 12) to office workers.
There were a few participants of note, such as Fantasy's younger brother, and some friends of progamers. Members of the KT Rolster organization were on hand to scout out any potential talent, and it appears that they invited a few players to trial with the team.
The next event will be held this weekend in Jeju and Gwangju.
My Starleague is scheduled to last till mid-may, then there will be the usual prelim with the amateurs that qualified from My Starleague + regular pros. After that, dual tournament, and then finally OSL. Even if they rush all the proceedings after MyStarleague, I don't see how they're gonna have OSL before June
DES also sent one of their reporters to try out. He failed but they will be sending reporters to other qualifiers too. The goal for the reporter is to get 1 win.

OSL turned out unprofitable so they are making radical adjustment to their entire system?
I applaud OGN for thinking outside the box, and pushing for new ideas. However, in midst of the current Blizzard v.s. Kespa law sue fiasco and speculation that BW is unprofitable, I can not help but to feel there is more than what meets the eye.

I think it has to do with them not having a sponsor yet or something.

And also possibly Effort's return.
They made the announcement of My Starleague a little more than a week after Hite announced Effort's return.

They probably think it'll be good enough for business to be worth delaying the hell out of the OSL.
Yeah, this was talked about in the first MyStarleague thread. I think that doing it this way really encourages amateurs to practice more and new players to get started, since now they can daydream of getting through these qualifiers, participating in OSL, etc. and and also have a chance to show that they can perform at live tournaments and get scouted by pro teams. It's really a great thing for the longevity of BW.
OGN has always seemed to have the attitude of "shit's getting stale, let's find something NEW to do for the sake of it" over the years, and I think this is just one of the most ambitious manifestations.
In terms of sponsors, I'm pretty sure OGN always has a bunch of sponsors lined up, but they're just trying to get the most money, and the sponsor with the best name value. Like, if EVER wanted to sponsor OSL for a discount, they prolly coulda had them as main sponsor for 5 years straight. But OGN searches around and does stuff like getting Korean Air involved, which was very much worth it as we all know

Its no secret, the revenue from Progaming is not as good as it was a few years ago.. so making the bottom line is very difficult. With consumer preferences having moved more toward MMOs and Tactical shooters, there have to be radical changes to try and recapture the market.

Yes yes Oz desperately needs some proleague level players to bolster their 1-2-3 combo

picture of Reach and Coaches scouting for new blood.
The 2 guys in the far right are kingdom and fellow commentator correct? Does this mean that they also commentate in the regional trials or are they just there to 'sit around'?

Btw thank you for that Thread...i really like that idea of an more "OPEN" league and scouting thingy
I'm not a fan of the delayed OSL at all. There's really no reason to delay it because a) they could have done a real OSL start to finish before this is over if they paced themselves or b) it doesn't matter because none of these scrubs are gonna stand a chance in the Dual Tournament against FLASH.
Hopefully Stork gets a seed into the Ro16. He already owns the all-time OSL Ro16 appearance by one, and once this gets underway it'll be two. Stork forever!
does winning an osl as an amateur will give you a pro permit? (dont start complaining on how a guy winning an osl would have got his permit by than - just trying to steer the soup) hypothetically lol suppose a god that started playing starcraft or just a very talented kid at the age of 14 or 12 what ever the min age was

No, I don't think it does. You need to be on a progaming team to have one.

While it probably wouldn't give a progaming license, each time has a certain number of licenses that they can give out to players each year. So in order to get a progaming license, you either have to win Courage or be recruited by a team and gifted the license. I'd imagine a promising new player making it deep into the OSL would be picked up by a team and gifted a license pretty quickly.
Bumping in hopes that someone might have some information on what's going on with this. When are they going to finally start the OSL proper? I'm all for the My Starleague idea but it's annoying that it seems to be delaying the OSL by months...

on the show, the progaming team chooses 2 of the 8 players from each of the region and then brings those players to the gaming house for 2 days. They're not picked up, it just means that they were picked to practice with the progamers for 2 days.
So the first episode, KT was the team that was involved. So the 8 players that made it through were interviewed by HOT/Reach/Coach of KT and then they chose 2 of the 8.
Next episodes where OZ was the team involved in the region, they chose 2 players to come with them for 2 days etc.

Big thanks to Cadical for uploading the MyStarleague VODs on the TL tracker! Despite not being able to understand Korean it's still awesome to watch, especially seeing XellOs really open up near the end of episode 3 and actually make a face that isn't -_-.
I hope you can keep uploading the videos for us, as I just finished watching the first 2 parts of episode 4 and can't wait to see who makes it through that round.
thanks gorchiza for sharing your video. too bad you didn't do well. but that's fine, hopefully they'll host more events like this in the future esp. now that kespa and blizzard have come to an agreement.
Wow gorchiza so nice to see that ongamenet was so welcoming and friendly towards you and so awesome that you got to sit in those chairs that progamers have sat on.
This is a really good move on their part. From what I've heard a lot of teams lost most of their practice partners and B-team players to SC2 (greener pastures, etc). Seems like a win-win for everyone in this situation.
