I decided I'd create this thread after noticing that I viewed some unit portraits differently for the longest time, and wanted to see other people's interpretations as well. You will notice that they are all Protoss as I started playing Starcraft when I was but a young lad, and I mostly played toss so these portrait images had stuck into my little brain.
For Example: The Dragoon
I viewed it like so: Like some kind of alien with dreadlocks. with the one eye being its mouth and the tube things being eyes.
when it turned out it was actually something like this:
The Zealot: Which I thought wore one of those russian hats, and wielded some kind of decorative staff, which turned out to be just part of his buzz light yearesque plasma shield helmet thing.
Another one is the Shuttle:
This one is self explanatory, it looks like a smiley face. Does anyone else agree?
And Alas, the High Templar: Which looks like a Football (American) player with his big shoulder pads.
^ I always saw the shoulder blade as a lower lip and wondered if the goofy looking alien was some sort of protoss that somehow didn't look like the other ones.

It's Jar-Jar Binks!
That is horrifying, and I will never ever be able to erase the image from my mind.

haha he looks so happy!
oh wow, looking at the zealot like that makes it look like it's straight out of spore...
in other news, with zerglings being so tiny, I always thought they were like little ostriches without heads or wings... They're so tiny you could interpret it as anything!
^ I always saw the shoulder blade as a lower lip and wondered if the goofy looking alien was some sort of protoss that somehow didn't look like the other ones.
yeah i agree it always irked me how that picture looked
at the beginning, i thought that the vulture red circles were his eyes rofl and he got a such big beard, although he is an infested terran with a tumor
I thought the eyes were at the top and that thing in the middle was its nose. I never noticed the red bulbs on the sides until recently, and that's when I finally realized that those were actually the eyes.

Lol I never noticed that, in fact I could not make out wat the drone is at all.
Does anyone else think the Probe looks like a futuristic taxi with windshield wipers. Or just a face.
oh wow i thought exactly the same on all of these to this day.. i guess when you are a kid you have a way of interpreting the images differently and it kinda sticks. Don't really know why..
^ I always saw the shoulder blade as a lower lip and wondered if the goofy looking alien was some sort of protoss that somehow didn't look like the other ones.
Hehe, seeing the Protoss like that he looks a fair bit like...
Hmmm I'm not sure if this makes much sense but I always saw the probe wayyy differently. I always saw the part circled as a weird robot head, with the blue strip being its visor. Also the two big green circles I guess were it's shoulder pads. lol now that I'm trying to describe it sounds stupid but it blew my mind when I found out the green balls were it's eyes =p
I used to always think the zealot looked like a duck, with the front part of his face being the "duck bill". Now that I look at it, he also looks like some alligator thing!
To get another terran one in... :D The battlecruiser was messed for me - I guess my monitor was too dark and so I couldn't see the eyes under the visor, so I thought he looked like this: Haha I used to ask my bro why they made the battlecruiser look so retarded and he's like "wtf are you talking about it looks completely normal." If you lean down really low or angle your monitor you might see it better, because the eyes under the visor disappear when it gets too dark.
This is very interesting and funny hehe, I love the impressions of the goon! Now that I've seen some different interpretations I can clearly see how they could have been seen that way haha :D OMG that goldeneye one is hilarious! Never seen that one before LOL
Btw Sigrun, I'm like 99% sure the red bulbs on the sides are not the eyes...
You can see the yellow dots of the eyes in the middle, they are small and hard to see on this picture. The head is somewhat tilted. I'm not completely sure though, didn't notice before how tilted the eyes were SC2 portrait showing eyes
Are they? Does everyone else think so? Dammit I might have had this one wrong all along too hahaha! I kinda like my interpretation of it still though, the bulbs make it look like a housefly T_T But the bulbs would make more sense based on how the portrait is made haha

I'm with Supwolf on this one, I always thought those very tiny dots were the eyes and not the red bulbs >__>

Lol I'm not sure either how I thought the dragoon looked like that, but I can tell you why I tihnk the zealot looks like that. It's cause I love Star Wars and I had watched Star Wars episode 1 which came out around the time I played Starcraft when I was a little kid, and I thought the zealots looked like nemoidians with there silly hats. + Show Spoiler +
Also, I can't imagine the lower lip on Artanis yet, but I'm kind of scared to try harder to see it. Once I see it...I might never be able to look at him the same way ever again ):

I was like "what", until I looked at the unmarked portrait from way below my LCD monitor.....LOOOOOOOL, it totally does look like a some retarded guy, the "eye" appears at a really low angle...
For me - Shuttle's portrait: A smiling face with funny sounds - Dragoon's portrait: A freaky green unintelligible Protoss face with muffled sounds - Zeratul's portrait: Looks like some dude so ugly he had to hide his face - or he's just in solitary confinement. And yes, the lower lips on Protoss face that makes it look like it's smiling. I've seen it from the first day playing BW and I guess I will never be able to unsee it.
On June 30 2010 17:50 ordos wrote: If you look at the sc2 drone portrait it's clearly the yellow dots
Yeah but the SC2 portrait is way different from the BW one, matter of fact I think its way too different from the BW one, it doesn't look like either one came from the other.
Oh wow, the red bulbs being the drone's eyes just blew my mind as well, thought that they were the little yellow ones >.> Oh and ingame for some reason I've never seen the drone as a creature with arms, I just see the two claws as it's head. So it's kinda just a body with a huge mouth that grabs minerals and stuff lol;

what? that picture was always pretty simple to me o.O
Agahnim from SNES Zelda. Always thought the crown on his head was actually his face and the red jewel in the middle was his mouth open, and he had some kind of green hood over his eyes. Realized when I was much older that his eyes are actually the white slits.

The dragoon interpretations is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. The game is much funner with goofy characters, and the dragoon is one hell of an example in the first place.

I am sooooo glad I'm not the only one who thought that Always saw it as some Samus-like thing with a blue visor ._.
Was I the only 13 year old at the time that thought that the Terran Marine's wireframe made his gun look like a giant dong? I'm at work now so I don't have an image but surely someone knows what I'm talking about...

This is in brood war so feels kinda off to mention but the portrait when selecting protoss buildings in sc2 looks like a parody. It's a rasta protoss. Also the terran looks about the same as in SC except it looks like it had a stroke or something or possibly high on drugs, maybe got some from rasta protoss chillin inside the nexus

My favorite is the Missile Turret one, I totally never noticed that! Wow... the funny thing is... Even when you pointed out that picture to me, my eyes totally went past what was obviously highlighted for me and I looked right at this, even though the real graphic doesnt look anything resembling a human controlling the thing in the back like a computer or something.

I believe mutalisks were acknowledged to be modeled after shrimp, guardians crabs, and devourers beetles you can see the wing casings/covers up to top left.

Some of the zerg mugshots have always been tough for me. I must be among Gooseheaded's "most terran players"; how is one supposed to interpret the defiler portrait? At least I'm not alone in having serious Rorschach tests with some of the artwork. :D
Not really about the portrait, but I always thought that marines had huge eyes( the color of your race) until a couple years ago. (ignore the random stuff, I found it on the web)
I always found the Queen portrait not fitting with it's in game model. It has these big warthog tusks pointing up, but in the model it seems like they have huge walrus-like tusks. EDIT: I know both tusks are different things in this case, but can somebody show me the Queens head on the game model?
Also, I never noticed until now, but the Infested Terran and the Overlord seem to have the exact same trunk.

The red bulb!
Then somebody told me the eyes is not the red bulb. Ah so confusing.
And the vulture, his beard is a little bit wierd. Or that is not a beard?
About vulture, I didnt realised it is a bicycle until 4-5 years later keke. it looked like a fast batman car. And the grenade doesn't looked like fragmatation grenade. More like fart bomb.
Ever since I started playing the game, I've seen the Zealot portrait as a guy with a big nose and a kind of goofy smile, with the light-up thing below his head being his "chin":
It's only in the last few years that I noticed I was looking at it wrong.

I was wrong
It's a bald dude's skin

Are you sure? I can see that, but the yellow cap seems more visible.. It's a different hue/color than skin would normally be. Couldn't they just have changed the portrait in SC II to a bald dude?
Is this a helmet opening toward the right (I've never seen protoss wear helmets) or a golden protoss face looking to the left... I honestly have no idea.

I can't see it your way at all, even with you filling in the lines
Good bump.
Going back to this post... I cannot see it either. How the heck anyone else could baffles me.
Its hard to see, but maybe this will help some (I erased parts that conflict with the 2nd face):
OH MY GOD, I thought I was the only one. Hahahahaha... I totally saw it the 'wrong' sideways way for years... I had played Warcraft 2 for about 3-4 years before I realized I was looking at it incorrectly the whole time.

Some of these other ones people see are interesting... hahaha
Edit: I can't see the orc one, even after the explanation... he's supposed to be looking left?!
Well, there are some thing that I think interesting in the Portrait, like.. Jim Raynor's hair (yeah... like Conquerer67 said, I think had like a "army style hair cut). The Goliath always remind me Psycho Mantis. I always thought that Kerigan used dreads xD. The vulture glasses are very similar to the Lara Croft's ones. The "thing" in the Multalisk mouth. It took me a long time until see that the medic use some kind of "cap" like Buzz Lightyear =p. And... seeing the HOTS gameplay... those ice monsters remind me panda bear guy lol

Only a few years ago did I realize that the face is actually looking to the right and looks like and orc with teeth and big tusks. I always thought it was a sort of gay/feminine looking face with the left eye off the left side and kinda a smirk or whatever

The only one I can't unsee is the 'Arbiter kitty portrait'.
I never knew about the man in the turret. (even after like 10 years of SC)
The ultralisk to me looked like a helmet with horns sticking out from the sides.
I maybe the only one who ever looked at the DA like this; he looked like a conical black blob looking the right, it was only last year that I realized that he's actually looking the left and the ellipse was actually his helmet.

Zero those are so good!
wow that took about 15 mins to figure out. Assuming the bag under his eye is his nose
One thing that took me forever to figure out was that Blizzard had the foresight to make most zerg units related to each other.
In the wireframe view all zerg units spawned from larva share very similar traits in their head design that still meshes with the diverse look of their heads in portrait view.
This thread is fucking amazing. I already knew about the turret (found it in that one thread about it :D) but the rest of this shit is fuckign mind blowing.
I really want to see what that one defiler picture is, it doesnt seem to be working anymore I see the trollface when I look at him now, lol.
and are you guys telling me that Aldraris DOESNT HAVE A MOUTH?

OMFG THE DARK ARCHON! I never saw that, for fucks sake how can i look wrong at so many pictures >.<
LOL wow at the DA. I didn't see that one coming! The best of all here is the first picture of the OP though. Each time I see it I feel a deep need of using it as my avatar, it's so hilarious :D

Nose should be renamed to mouth. The teeth is just his chin. IMO, But after being wrong in so many cases I'm just not sure at all.

Oh my god the battlecruiser. All the way back on the second page, if you have an LCD monitor you absolutely must slump down in your seat until you see it the way the guy describes it. Way too funny.
Always thought the Goliath was wearing a yellow cap or helmet
I was wrong
It's a bald dude's skin
!! O_O
Are you sure? I can see that, but the yellow cap seems more visible.. It's a different hue/color than skin would normally be. Couldn't they just have changed the portrait in SC II to a bald dude?

Lol I never noticed that, in fact I could not make out wat the drone is at all.
Does anyone else think the Probe looks like a futuristic taxi with windshield wipers. Or just a face.
I don't know about you guys, but for the longest time I've seen the Scout as some kind of cow thingy. The shadow on the top of the head look like horns and the color looks like that of a cow's face.
Singleplayer screen has an animation for the human dna helix. If you look well you can "choose to see" wheter it spins clockwise or counterclockwise, just like the spinning ballerina.

Thank you. I still couldn't figure it out until you pointed out what is nose was. Wow. He looks like some sort of retarded, dragon ball z freiza henchmen.
The protoss scout portrait looks like an old mean wizard with huge eye brows wearing a hood. The lighter bottom half being the beard and the small thing in the middle being his frowny mouth.

^ I always saw the shoulder blade as a lower lip and wondered if the goofy looking alien was some sort of protoss that somehow didn't look like the other ones.
Bwahaha, that one is just too good! XD I'll never be able to unsee that silly Jar Jar-esque face.
OMG THE BATTLECRUISER DUDE HAS EYES
I always thought his visor cast a shadow obscuring his eyes completely

MOTHER OF FFFUCK, i always saw him like you did! Now the direction he's looking at keeps changing like this bitch: + Show Spoiler +
Also I'm surprised no one brought up the ghost - what's with the guy's hat? What's with the shoulder?
The way he waddles and looks and that shoulder reminds me this guy from "house of the dead" + Show Spoiler +
And the fucking beret is no less than this which is stupid considering the ghost's portrait.
And what i will probably never get is why does HT has a spark instead of his head lol, just look at it it's easier to see in game when he wobbles and is viewed sideways.
The SCV driver isn't black. It's just really dark inside the SCV. I wouldn't mind if he were black, but he's not. I just needed to get that off my chest.
Instead of imagining his hood as 3D and kinda in the foreground, imagine it as a flat black background. The hood's rim is the reflection on a strange, bald head in front of that background.
Hood? What hood? He's got blue rimlighting on the back of his head.
It's more tripping me out that his eyes are the warp in graphic or something.
...speaking of which, am I the only one that always thougth I was building a "warp in pylon" or building a "warp in (the) nexus" as opposed to... well, warping in a nexus?

I've always thought that the probe portrait was an upside-down cartoon grasshopper, with two big green eyes, antennae going down from his head and blue thingy in a middle for a constantly opened mouth.
and a vulture, i've always thought it's a robotic guy with bouncy red eye-cameras, small square hat, and thought that is beard is actually his thin neck and he is always kinda tense, coming out of right bottom part of the icon, tilting head to the right.
protoss advisor/aldaris was always the bearded floating head and the side yellow collar thingy were his legs, inexplicably connected to the back of his head.
also i always thought that the Science Facility had a shallow dome on it's top with a crescent-like window. turns out the roof was button-shaped
haha nice bump! I had a lot of laughs from this thread, too bad many of the images are gone.

So is the protoss observer portrait the front or back, can't tell if it's the front camera or the back end of the rocket booster, or which is which.
Either the graphic artist or the person coding the observer unit movement messed up. Or maybe it was intended that way since the booster exhaust occasionally shoots out a laser beam trail, propelling the observer. But why does this unit have an ass portrait, like the mutalisk?
