STX’s head coach Kim Eun Dong crated the startling strategy of removing the entire team from the bench, and this move has been surrounded by controversy.
Daily E-Sports’ reporter gave him a telephone interview, and he stated “this move is not meant to belittle the fans, it is simply a temporary tactic meant to change the team’s atmosphere. It seems people are misunderstanding it.”
During STX’s SPL game on the 21st, the entire team was absent from the bench, but watched the game from the preparation room. After a game ends, the entire team would come out to cheer each other on, and then return to the preparation game. This strategy is known as the “Empty Bench strategy,” but the fans are seeing it as ignoring the fans who come to cheer the players on.
Regarding this, Coach Kim states “I keep stressing over what’s really serving the fans, and then I made this decision. STX is currently 1-5 in R5, in a 4 loss streak, but still in rank 2 overall. But if this continues, it can affect our playoffs performance and attendance. Considering how losing is not good for the fans.” In light of this, Coach Kim made this decision.
He says “in a round before, we were in a 5 loss streak. Back then, we also temporarily suspended meeting with fans (after every game, there is a fan meeting where fans ask questions, give gifts, etc. lasting about half an hour) A losing streak upsets us, and it’s hard to communicate with the fans, and so I think it’s more important for the fans to see us winning.”
There are two reasons Coach Kim made this decision. First, it’s to change up the team’s atmosphere. Coming to the studio, due to being in a losing streak, the players wear a depressed expression on the bench, and this exacerbates the team’s mood. Also, watching the games in the preparation room allows the players to more easily analyze the entire game, and can freely discuss amongst each other, which increases the team’s cohesiveness, also aimed at changing the team’s atmosphere and mood.
In addition, the new strategy is also due to the new lineup rules. Since R4, the lineups changed to being announced live, and gave birth to “expressions betraying the lineup.” Having the next players wait in the preparation room reduces the chance of the other team knowing who’s coming up next due to absence from the bench to practice. Coach Kim, in order to leave the losing streak, decided to try not to expose the lineup.
Coach Kim said “it’s not some brilliant strategy, we just want to leave the losing streak, change the current situation, and get a good result. Isn’t it acceptable for us to try new things? The coaching staff and the players together came up with this, we’re just experimenting. I hope no one misconstrues this as ignoring or belittling the fans. We’re just trying to allow the fans to see us winning, to better serve the fans.”
He also said “during this period, STX will hold more events to communicate with the fans. We think just sitting on the bench alone isn’t doing much for the fans. For the fans, it’s more important to see the happy faces of the players after they win. I hope people can see this as a temporary strategy for victory. If this can help the team’s atmosphere, then we will offer up other kinds of events as an alternative, I hope everyone can wait and see.”

lol thanks for the translation, i still think it's stupid though.
ps: nice icon, where'd you get it?
|
Like I expected, not exposing line up, discussion, and a better atmosphere. Still lame =p
|
I guess that makes some sense, but that last photo makes me want to cry... Other teams better not do this too. ><
|
I didn't quite understood... I mean... what?
If they're losing, they should focus on training, not hiding from their fans. It's not everyday you can go watch your favorite player that close.
|
They have to understand, if all the Teams did this, it would suck. Bad.
Come out with your poker face, don't betray the line up, and own face. Everyone knows STX can do it this season.

Come to Colorado so I can eat you ;_;

Perhaps what they really should do is fix Clam and Kal's failures. SK Telecom did good with Bisu, probably saving him from falling for good. STX is one of the few teams with 2 S-class players, it's a shame they can't come up with results. I doubt that this is really what they need.

Why is it so important to you guys? His arguments are sound, and I really don't think having players sitting on a bench is a big deal. They said they would still meet up with the fans (and it's not like any of us watching vods and streams care about the bench anyway.

Agreed. If STX is allowed to do this, and it does give an advantage, then what will stop the other teams from doing the same? As a result, fans will see empty seats and feel discouraged from coming back to watch. I hope that KeSPA or whatever will disallow coaches from doing this.
|
So this is thought up by the players as well. So it guess it really helps the player.
Yea, something is so wrong with STX on losing streak and Great on rampage. keke
At least SKT T1 is doing so well.
I do hope STX will do well soon afterwards. Fighting Fighting Fighting!
|
Damn it Calm, hope this works in his favour - that's all I got to say about this funny bench clearing ordeal.
|
This is not fair. It gives STX a small "edge" over the other teams.
So what's stopping other teams from doing this as well?
If that is the case, the attendance rate will surely drop.
Ptff, my analysis was right on the dot regarding STX's reason for this. That doesn't stop me from hating them though.
Go break 5 game losing streak on your own...I don't see estro or ace retreating from the bench just because of losing streaks.
|
I like how you put strategy between apostrophes in the title.
Anyhow, I don't really see the point. Changing their mood by making them "practice" (watch replays) more and stopping them from seeing fans? How is that supposed to help?
|
so 24/24 Practice time ? Well >"<

It's not a secret that STX has confidence issues. Maybe this will help.
Is there any good reason for this STX hate or is it just cool kids jumping on the bandwagon?
|
Man i think STX should take there PLayer a rest like SKT does with Bisu They'll be stress

Shaddup Aussie scum.
We're winning Proleague kay?

I still haven't figured if your sig is serious, csheep. I even PM'd but no answer
|
Kal has 4 wins in his last 10, clam has 1. Didn't think it could get THAT bad.
|
Translation: I've got no idea what the fuck to do, so were going with something that sort of worked a while ago.
|
So he's saying it's basically just to shake things up because the team's having a bad couple of weeks. It's nice that they at least took the time to explain.

Anyways, kinda explains the situation, but still a wtf move. Nice icon Sheep.

Yeh that picture is sad. So deserted D: Well, hopefully this strategy works out for them, otherwise it'd be a whole lot of controversy for nothing!

at least it's interesting to see a team trying something new to get out of a slump
|
I swear I will change my team icon to SKT (Hyuk and Bisu) once July leaves the team.

So what's stopping other teams from doing this as well? Greater public pressure.
If it is just one team, viewers might dislike but tolerate their oddity. If another team follows suit, it's a pattern, as well as a problem.

I'd think this hurts the person in the booth. Since doing something you have practiced many times comes easier with an audience, especially an audience of your peers, this might result in worse performance. W/e, hope STX gets smashed every game till they cut this crap out.

Thanks for the translation, still not sure about their concept, only time will tell if it works out for the better or worse.

where did you get that from? most people choke on TV and do worse than they usually do in practice. playing on TV affects every player even if it's just a little bit (even JD and flash have said they dont play as good on TV as they do in practice).
|
They should just give the entire team balaclavas for when they're on the bench.
|
STX needs Hwasin back. T_T
|
They need CJ faces I doubt anyone could know what player from CJ is coming. -_- ftw
|
They used this "tactic" against Khan right? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL got rolled XD
|
BW in Korea is a professional spectator sport. This means that as professionals, they must display themselves in front of audiences despite the disadvantages. We all understand the STX coach's point that his "strategy" means better performance, but it is incredibly unprofessional.
KESPA should just ban this practice outright, so other teams aren't tempted to follow suit because they think STX is getting a leg up. STX just needs to man up and play better. The other teams play in the same conditions as you do. This unprofessional crap will only hurt BW as a spectator sport.
|
This is fucking retarded. Next thing you know we gonna have this guy asking Kespa if his team can play matches through battle.net at the fucking practice room. They're losing not because the players have to sit on the bench. They're losing because all of them are sucking nuts right now.
|
Makes sense but I just really don't like the new rules for proleague.
|
we get it, you want to send your team a message for its poor performance. do it on your own time, not the fans' time to see the players :/
|
didnt finish reading it but ima comment on what i did get thus far, and that is that this is a very good idea, it really lets the players feel more comfortable before going to play, i mean sitting there constantly, just waiting. It can stress anyone out, as appose to sitting where its less loud watching from the silence, waiting your turn, its better this way, hope they stop the losing streak with this.
|

That's because their faces are all deformed.

STX's entire bench has less star power than that guy.
At least STX will still be represented by the coach and his preteen hairstyle. That's their image.
|
What an awful explanation lol.
|
it's terrible. when they lose, they'll do an even bigger disservice to the fans

This is still totally retarded.
