Two maps, Byzantium 2.3 and Destination, have been kept from the previous season. Byzantium has undergone very slight changes from last season's 2.0 iteration, removing mineral patches from the nat and the third in order to make the map more Zerg friendly. Neo Harmony has been adapted from Proleague, and Carthage is a new map.
The Steal Draft is a somewhat long and complicated process, not helped at all by the large number of players that now qualify for each MSL season. Here’s how it works:
The first eight seeds are placed into groups A through H, with the first seed in Group A and the eighth seed in Group H. The first eight seeds may never be moved by any player, they remain in the groups in which they are seeded. Seeds nine through sixteen are determined by previous MSL appearances and performance, with more obviously being better. Seeds nine through sixteen are placed into the other pair in groups A through H, but in reverse order. Seeds eight and nine would be in the same group, then seven and ten, six and eleven and so on up until the first and sixteenth.
Once players are placed into the groups, the remaining players are also ranked based upon previous MSL appearance and performances. Starting with the seventeenth, and ending with the thirty-second, each player takes his own name and places it in an open spot next to the player he wishes to play against.
After everyone has been placed upon the board, the stealing begins. It starts in ascending order at the sixteenth seed and moves all the way up to the first. Seed nine through sixteen are allowed three options: (1) Exchange himself with another player, (2) Exchange his current opponent with another player, or (3) Pass the turn and exchange no one.
Seeds three through eight work a little differently. They are able to pick two moves from the following: (1) Exchange a player in their group with another player, (2) Exchange any two other players with each other, or (3) Pass the turn and exchange no one. Seeds two and one earn a few more decisions. They are able to switch any player with another player and may do so up to three times or until they wish to pass.
Results and Standings for the Round of 32
Once again we return to a group stage for the round of thirty-two. Each group consists of four players; the Steal Draft determines their placement in each group. Each group must go through a double elimination format to determine which players will advance and which players are eliminated. If a player can get two wins before he gets two losses, then he advances to the next round. If he can’t, then he is eliminated. Two players from each group of four will have the chance to continue to fight for this season’s title.
Group A 1. sAviOr 2-0 ► Advances to Round of 16 2. ZerO 2-1 ► Advances to Round of 16 3. Bisu 1-2 ► Eliminated 4. maGma 0-2 ► Eliminated
The number of remaining competitors has been halved as the tournament continues into the Round of 16. Beginning with this round, the tournament becomes single elimination. The players who finished first out of their groups last round will be paired against a player that finished in second. Each pair of players will play a best-of-three match to determine not only who will advance to the next round, but who will earn seeds into the following MSL.
Thumbs Down Since there are four maps, there will be one map in each best-of-three match that will not be played. The players who finished first out of their group are given the opportunity to give a “thumbs down” to one of the maps. What this means is that the player will get to choose one of the four maps that he will not have to play on during this round. This allows the player the advantage of getting to remove a map that does not fit his play style or that he thinks may be imbalanced in a particular match-up.
Stork 2-1 ► Advances to the Quarterfinals Kwanro 1-2 ► Eliminated
The Quarterfinals
Thumbs Down As we transition to the the quarter finals, with the format changing into a best-of-five series with two equally ranked players, the Thumbs Down system also changes. Both players will pick a map that they do not want to be repeated in the five map set. (As there are four maps in the tournament, one is repeated for a best-of-five match.)
Three maps, Neo Harmony, Byzantium 2, and Destination, have been kept from the previous season. Carthage is a new map that we, as of yet, know nothing about.
Neo Harmony isn't returning from last season, rather it's newly adopted from Proleague. Also, I don't think Medusa is in the map pool for this season. Also it seems like semioldguy should get some credit as the detailed explanations are copied word for word from his threads.

-_- It's supposed to be copied! Look at this thread, semioldguy got his material from Pachi who probably got it from the previous thread etc etc
Group F with FBH, Flash, Jaedong, and Hwasin could possibly be more of a group of death than the previous osl group of death (Bisu, Much, Julyzerg, and Flash)
A- Bisu: sAviOr - Zergs get raped and sAviOr squeezes out 2nd B- Kal: Leta - Interchangeble but Destination is map 2 C- Jangbi: Fantasy - Rape from Jangbi and Fantasy easily taking down the others D- Kwanro: Free - Kwanro does some super agressive build to win and Free easily beats the others E- Much: Up - Mech wins from Up F- Jaedong: Flash - Fierce TvTs and JD taking home 2-0 without much problems G- Canata: Ruby - I dunno H- Stork: Sea - Looks like a really fun group with macro beasts
in the op, hanbit stars should be changed to woongjin stars to accurate reflect the new sponsor of the team. not that it's that big of a deal, but it's also not too big of a deal to edit the post.

Should be changed to properly reflect history. Also, citing where you got information from is necessary as well.

Actually I wrote everything out, and each write out was different from MSL to MSL aside from the group selection outline. When I started doing the MSL R&S Threads, I created my own layout/format and writing. I didn't copy anyone's. Pachi's thread was a copy of mine when I was missing. (if you actually read anything past the title of that thread, you would see pachi clearly credits it as not being his own)
Someone who lives in Korea should put that banner on a sign and bring it to MSL matches, I want to see what the commentators would have to say about it.
But yeah I don't think Hyuk would have an easy time in any group with a field this stacked.
I wouldn't count Hwasin out. He can play amazingly well.. sometimes. I guess it'll all come down to whether or not he feels like playing on S level or B level

Pretty sure any of the 3 players in his group are capable of keeping up with him even if he's playing his best, so I don't think it'll exactly come down to just that.
God group F is going to be SICK to watch live. I kinda feel like it will be disappointing no matter what though because I wish all 4 could go through..

If no one else agrees with me on this that's fine, but I was wondering why the group results are in spoilers. I'm lazy and I'd rather just be able to scroll down and have all the results right there. Besides, spoilers in a R&S thread seem ... out of place.

Actually second place would play Leta, first place would play Luxury.
yeah, and one entire half of the bracket will be purely Terrans and Zergs. Makes me sad that we won't see much ZvP at all past the Ro32 in this MSL. Gonna be a lot of ZvT though, which I'm looking forward to.
anyways~ Leta has got it rough he has to play the winner of the GROUP OF DEATH
WOW..JD , Flash, Hwasin, and FBH wow...predicting JD and Flash advance, but FBH and Hwasin have extremly good TvZ and Hwasin's TvT isn't bad its not set in stone, but Hwasin and FBH both have a good shot at advancing as well

Leta plays 2nd player of F group, though most likely wont be easy either.
Does anyone know if there is going to be a stream for tonight's games (Round of 16 Day 1-1)? I want to avoid getting up at 4:30 only to find out that there isn't one again if I can avoid it.

You have a different definition of "practically guaranteed" than I do...I think any of those 4 players have a decent chance of getting to the semis from that portion of the bracket.

If you think Savior is a "guarantee" to beat Up (11-4 this season in TvZ) and ZerO or Yarnc (probably the 3rd/4th best ZvZ players in the world atm), you truly must be blinded by your fandom.

I meant to write practically guaranteed if he beats upmagic, and yeah, it is practically guaranteed if he beats upmagic. Savior is more than a class above zero and yarnc in zvz.

"More than a class above"?? Then how did Savior lose to Yarnc in PL just 3 months ago?

Let's compare quickly
Savior ZvZ 48-32 (60% winrate) 8-2 in last 10 games
Yarnc ZvZ 30-32 (48.39%) 6-4 in last 10 games
Savior is 6-3 vs Yarnc
I don't see what's so farfetched about feeling very good about Savior's chances. Not to mention he is on a 8-0 win streak and has been showing some spectacular ZvZ (and beaten both Zero and Yellow convincingly).
In my opinion, Savior, Zero, and Yarnc are all on roughly the same level in ZvZ, so any of them are perfectly capable of getting to the semis(I don't think Up is going to make it through Savior, and if he does, I still think both zero and yarnc are probably favored over him).

I'm gonna have to agree. I am a HUGE sAviOr fan, but guaranteeing anything over Up, Yarnc, or ZerO is just ridiculous. I sincerely hope he beats them, but I'm not putting money down on it. I think ZerO's my favourite to move on out of the 4 if sAviOr doesn't pull through. -Edit- ZerO just because I like him lol, I got nothing to back that up. He hasn't been so hot lately.
On February 20 2009 08:43 Simplistik wrote: Was anyone else somewhat disappointed with the week two so far? Not necessarily with the results, just with the quality of the games?
Yeah they've been kind of bland and rather disappointing. I wanted to see if sAviOr deliver an awesome game on set 3, but UpMagic decided to have a brain fart or fell asleep at the booth.
Well, we have a Savior vs Zero quarterfinal. Though Zero has been pretty hot lately, so has Savior. Savior has a huge experience advantage over Zero. While people may think lowly of experience and point to series like GGPlay vs Fantasy to discredit my idea, you have to realize that many times the inexperienced defeat the experienced through means of innovation, or the experienced player is slumping. It's pretty hard to innovate in ZvZ imo, and Savior is definitely not slumping. Savior's ZvZ is at least as good as Zero's, if not better. I predict Savior 3-0 Zero.

lol wtf ur talkin about?? i remember in his prime he went fe against 9 pool speed from chojja on close positions (reverse lt) and still won... he owned zvz when it mattered in the individual leagues and u say he was never strong zvz?? get real pls, if anything, his opponent had a tiny tiny chance not to get raped cus his zvt/zvp was so insanely good at that time, but therefore calling his zvz "not strong" is still just ridiculous -_-

That was mainly for entertainment purposes I believe, I think thats what he said on an interview at least. It started out as a joke by GoRush on the group ceremonies, he said something like Savior has no chance to beat him so he can as well just play terran and Savior decided to do just that.

i'm pretty sure it was because savior knew that he could advance from the group really easily so he decided to play terran for fun (it had crap players in it next to gorush, fortunately for savior and gorush, both made it to the quarters in that league (gorush succumbed to bisu in semis, savior to fbh in that epic bo5 qf) )
edit:
Ma Jae Yoon (sAviOr), when asked why he chose terran, replied "I have been thinking about this for a long time. I want to push myself to get a little bit of momentum so I will play as terran", and "The fans will have fun when they see me differently and it would also be fun for me as well.
Also, "I did not choose terran because Park Tae Min (GoRush) made fun of me in the group selection ceremonies. I wanted to play a good player if I was going to play terran so I chose terran; I do not have any particular hard feelings against Park Tae Min (GoRush), and asked people not to overanalyze his decision to play terran.
Oh god I don't want to update this thread. Everyone I wanted to win, lost in week 2-2. p4ndemic, you've eased the pain by giving me the Ro8 matchups. Thanks.
Savior will mind fuck Zero with his tacktics . Cause Savior always was playoff baller Like this : game -1 . Zero 9 pool --- Savior 12 pool . Zero is behind. game -2 Zero taking expo with 12 hatch --- Savior 9 pool .Zero is behind game -3 Zero playing 12 pool ---- Savior taking expo with 12 hatch .Zerp is behind.

Nice semifinals. Zero vs Luxury will be a sick zvz and Stork vs Jangbi a sick pvp. Also, the finals will be a zvp for sure, which is my second favorite match up.
wow just seen the stork vs forgg games and recalled there was a time i was a fan of stork but somehow lost it or forgot now i know why stork is awesome sometimes he plays so damn smart its amz and when he is in trouble he menages to get out of it with some imba crazy move and take the lead wil eventually lead to win and sometimes he plays like a 6 year old red alert wannabe vs forgg he showed the imba stork yay

I assume you mean silver medal and if you only looked at the quarter final bracket that doesn't really say much since one of them has to be in the finals..
on the more topic-related note, it warms my heart to see all 14 Terran got knocked out before the quarter finals while 2 Zerg & 2 Protoss made it with only 9 starting players for each race.
