doing favors for people sucks, and i am never doing it, ever ever again. helping people is stupid and shitty and a horrible idea if you have any self-respect at all.
here's what happens when someone asks you a favor, there's three outcomes. you either a) say yes and do the favor, b) say yes but don't do the favor, c) say no.
if you end up doing someone a favor, you put in however much time or money, usually a lot more time or money than the person asking you the favor realizes or cares, like if you spend 5 fucking hours on some video or some song but they don't know shit about anything, and that's why they asked you, so they don't have any fucking clue how hard or how long you worked on it, and then you end up finishing it and half the time you don't even get credit, and even if you do, most of the time ur just a footnote on somebody else's pride and joy
if you end up not following through on it because you realize how much work is required and how little it's going to pay off for you, and you just put it way down the list of priorities or don't have time for it at all, which is totally reasonable, then the person you initially agreed to thinks u "let them down", like you owe anything to them even though they had the audacity to come and ask you for some huge favor and you were just trying to be nice and say yes and make everybody happy. instead they just think of you as a flake and that follows you forever pretty much
then there's c, which i'm going to start doing to every single person who ever asks me a favor, but i'm going to change it from say "no" to "no idiot i don't have time for ur bullshit"
note that nothing on TL brought this up, although i do get asked to do tons of "projects" from TL people and no i don't have any time for that so don't ever ask me motherfucker, and props to the rest of the graphics team u guys are unsung heroes
i'm actually mad because:
my sister is all pissed at me because i didn't play a fuckin raffi cover set with her at some gay faggy cover concert with like 100 people there. raffi is fucking shitty and for kids and yes i guess it might be a funny concept but no i would never spend 4 hours practicing BANANA PHONE like i had to on wednesday, playing the same shitty children's songs over and fucking over because my sister is a horrible musician and mentally retarded. then when i said "there's no way we can play this tonight, it's not ready and ur too drunk" she's like U LET ME DOWN WE'RE NOT FRIENDS ANYMORE I CAN'T BELIEVE U DID THIS
i didn't even fucking want to play that shitty set i only said yes because you were hammered and i thought it was a pipe dream like all your other fucking horrible half-baked ideas STFU why can't some people just realize that their ideas suck and they will never come to fruition, and they should stop asking other people to help them become reality when it's a total utter waste of fucking time
edit: god STFU jody u fucking retard raffi is the worst music i've ever heard and banana phone is a stupid fucking song i would rather play ITS PEANUT BUTTER JELLY TIME every day for the rest of my life than a raffi cover set
moral of the story: don't ask me to do anything because i'm not ever helping anyone ever again. ever. (except small favors i don't care about those, i just hate getting involved in other people's huge projects)

I'm the oldest out of my siblings and we're a chinese family so when I ask for a (reasonable) favour, they pretty much have to do it. Also they have to call my in a respectable way: "older brother" instead of my first name.
In the olden days I might have to return the favour by protecting them if they got in a fight or something, but the way society works nowadays I not really obliged to do them any favours at all. I still have to "look after them", although that usually means making sure they're doing my chores properly.

I agree that it sounds disrespectful, but I think most people who say that probably intend to say "Could you do me a favour."

doing favors when you're not asked to do them gives everyone warm fuzzy feelings inside. but i agree that asking for favors is a bad system most of the time. you have to judge the person really strictly to see if they appreciate and know exactly what they're asking of you. or just immediately think of something they can do for you in return, so that it's more of an exchange of services than an exchange of favors
