Do favors for people you like, because...you like them?
Say no to the rest. I can't see how there's any discussion about you being a pussy or not having self-respect. Only favors I ever act upon are people that I deem worth it [ close friends ] which means even if they never pay me back its enough to know that I did something that benefited them. Also close friends usually don't ask unreasonable or ridiculous favors. Even if they do, its easier to explain to them why its stupid or why I'm not doing it.
Everyone else say no in one way or another. A favor cannot be completed without the person asking and you participating. Its kinda like going to see a movie you know is gonna be bad, and then complaining it sucks while watching it<---dumb, unless you go to see it with good friends, you're bound to have a good time anyway. So yeah I guess that's my analogy.

I hate it when anyone asks you if you "Want to do them a favor." Bitch, no one WANTS to do you a favor. No one WANTS to pick up your goddamn family or friend at the fucking airport or help you with your fucking calculus homework. No one WANTS to spend time helping you out with no benefit to themselves. The only reason they would do it is cause of social debt or guilt.

I can 100% relate. I get asked for favors a lot, I simply ask people to pay me for my time now (been taken advantage of plenty, so I completely understand your feelings there). I just say something like, "This is going to take me 5 hours to fix your (whatever) or make you this (thing), so pay me whatever you think 5 hours of my time is worth. I usually make $(amount)/(time) when I do this professionally." Totally reasonable. Then the burden's on them to not insult you. And if they do, write them off. Nothing is more productive than writing off bad friends.
LOL i just remember, my roommate asked me to drop off his rent check our first month, I'm like, "No." "Why not?" "Don't want to." We were all smoking bud and everyone in the circle started laughing nervously because I was so direct.

In your specific situation I get what you say. On the other hand, if you do "favor-trading" with the right people, it will benefit both of you and you will be sure to get something back. Just be picky.
