So I’ve been playing Brood War, on and off, since the game came out. At the time, I was only about twelve, so there are some things about Starcraft’s unit portraits that I’ve always just taken for granted that I thought I should probably ask about. As ever, I defer to TL’s collective wisdom on things like this.
SCVs:
Okay, the humble SCV is probably the one that struck me most because, as a child, I was never good enough to progress far beyond building SCVs and marines. This meant that these early-game unit portraits were core to my BW experience. Still, I’m sure there are better players out there than me who can’t help but have noticed that there’s something seriously wrong with the dude who pilots SCVs.
+ Show Spoiler +There's an undeniable resonance there.
I mean… look at him. Tell me there isn’t something amiss there? Someone once told me that the confederacy was full of people who were basically mutants, and let’s face it; Edmund Duke alone provides some interesting evidence there… I mean, what’s up with that guy. Is he meant to be a hunchback? I always thought that was part of the character and why he was such a total jerk.
If I don't presume him to be some kind of malformed unfortunate, raging against the world, I have to reconsider the guy and think, "Hey, he's kind of a douche."
The Adjutant:
Right, so I know now from looking it up that the lady you see when you click on a Terran building is an artificial intelligence called an Adjutant, but as far as I remember there wasn’t too much to prepare me for that when I was younger, so when I saw this robot chick every time I clicked on a building, I just kind of presumed she was some Terran lady who lived in my command centre.
I used to look at that portrait and think to myself, “Gee, she must be really important, whoever she is. They’ve given her head a little robot body to live on after the rest of her has died.”
Of course, that led to me trying to picture what kind of robot body you could possibly build around that picture…
Please, don’t judge me for the art here… I just kind of assumed she ran around on like, the desks or something in the command centre. I guess now that I put it into words it does seem kind of ridiculous.
Goliaths:
Alright, this one is less of a question than just me wondering what happened. I’m not sure how many of you have played BW recently, or even how many of you still hear it when a unit talks at you, but the Goliath voice was one that carried certain badass connotations. I mean, he had Worf’s voice, if you listened hard you could almost hear it say, “Goliath online, bitches.”
Check that dude out, he doesn’t care who you are or what you’re doing, he’s got Charon and he knows how to use it. He’s wearing a gasmask indoors probably just because he’s not comfortable unless there’s something strangling him at all times.
Then, somehow, it’s like he got the call to tell him he wouldn’t be in SC2 and decided to drown himself in batter.
That is a Ricky Lake degree of worrying weight gain. He's such a mess.
Edit: If anyone else has any totally messed up impressions of units in SC, do share, or I'll feel like I'm on my own here...

The BW vulture always looked like a head on a spring to me, it was weird.

I only noticed this until someone on TL pointed this out
if you turn down your screen's brightness (or just ignore the shadowy parts) the bc portrait looks REALLY retarded (imagine the cheekbone bright spot is the eye, nose remains nose)

This is exactly what I'm talking about! I knew something was up with that dude, but back in the nineties he was the "cool" one. No matter what way you look at it, the guy doesn't have a neck at all...
I also can't unsee the battlecruiser one now.

The guy in the scv would also pick his nose if you watched him long enough. Yuck.

Jinro = SCV
Welp, now I kind of wish I hadn't made the easter island head comparison... the SCV definitely looks more like Jinro, or does Jinro look like an SCV?

I have a friend who used always to tell me that Robocop gave him nightmares, because he remembered the scene where he was all damaged and not wearing his headphones and couldn't understand why anyone would want to hurt a robot policeman.
I wonder why the Adjutant looks so human; it seems so much more porcelain in SC2

So many of these are obvious when shown to you.. This is one of them, nice find :D
Also, i think the overlords in BW moved faster when moving on a diagonal?

I'm about done here, but I've got to throw this one down before I forget to:

I also seem to remember that there's like, a single broken pixel on the animation of a Guardian as it flies in one particular direction. There's one white block that blinks in and out. My friend used to call that the Guardian Landing Light; it helped other guardians not run into it.

The SC2 Goliath is based on a Blizzard employee, and the Goliath hero is based on Dustin Browder himself, so.. the fat joke you made is directly towards those two employees, hahaha..

Welp, there's not much I can say in my defense there. Strange how much more acceptable it is to say a fictional character is overweight...
