I am concerned about people's reading comprehension on TeamLiquid. I believe that a large number of TL members are not reading effectively, for lack of a better term.

The concern has arisen from this thread. The aforementioned thread contains discussion about BaeZZi potentially ceasing to upload VODs. Although the OP doesn't explicitly describe why BaeZZi is stopping, other posters in the thread have explained the situation. Here is a summary of the thread based on my understanding.

Oskyloveo is a large provider of StarCraft VODs and is the source that BaeZZi used. Oskyloveo is probably going to stop providing the VODs and, therefore, BaeZZi will need to find a new source. BaeZZi says that he's not sure what to do next and implies that he might need to pay to get the VODs.

The impact on TL members from the "death" of oskyloveo is that there is no supplier of StarCraft VODs. While there are some means available, they do not meet our current elevated expectations. One temporary solution is wfbrood. However, most TL members can't read chinese (mandarin?) and so they find it inconvenient to check wfbrood.

Returning to my thesis, some posters in the thread seem to not understand the situation. There are posts like, "Where I donate" or "What is Jon747's paypal account?" These posts indicate that people want to donate money to BaeZZi. I think donating money to BaeZZi right now is stupid and not the best solution.

Donating money to BaeZZi right now is not a good idea. Donations will not solve the problem of the source (oskyloveo) disappearing. BaeZZi has hinted that there may be new sources that he can pay to use. My first point with this is that he has yet to provide any specific details. What is the estimate of cost? If there is no estimate of the cost, how much should you donate? Will we need to donate again in a week? A month? My second point is that we probably won't need to pay for a new source. Based on Zatic's posts in the aforementioned thread, Zatic should be able to find a replacement source. My third point is that BaeZZi is replaceable. Zatic is a champ and is already doing the same job as BaeZZi. The reason there have been differences between nevake (Zatic+TL) and Jon747 (BaeZZi) is because of different sources. If in some terrible reality we need to pay for our VODs, why not pay Zatic who is reliable and a part of our community?

Based on my analysis, it would be a bad idea to donate right now. So, why do so many people want to donate? I have a few thoughts but I'd like some opinions for what everyone else thinks.

1. I'm missing crucial information about the scenario. Either I misread the thread or the information isn't posted in the thread.

2. People aren't reading the entire thread. If you just read BaeZZi's blurb in the OP and decide to donate, then you're stupid. Why are you donating money without understanding the context? Are you seeing, "I don't want to spend my money..." and thinking to yourself, "Oh, I have money! I'll pick up the slack."?

3. People have reading comprehension problems. Maybe people have read the entire thread but don't understand the scenario. Would this be due to problems because English is their second language? I don't know.

4. People decide that it is now a good time to reward him for his past service.

I think reading comprehension is important when you're communicating on a forum. This example with people jumping to donate money really has me interested if they're related and, if so, how they effect TL.

Some people just thought that throwing money away solves all of the problems.

I suppose I was hoping there were relatively few people like that on TL. There are a number of posts that seem clueless in that thread.

I notice people are TL are too willing to spend money, thinking it solves a problem. I remember Ret posting he was having trouble in Korea and everyone wanted to give him money when that wasn't even the issue.

She's not worth it man. You're just infatuated. You're at the bloom of your youth and your hormones are going haywire. Enjoy it while it lasts. I suggest getting your shit together. First off, sever your connections with her. Being around her makes YOU depressed, and your being around her makes it worse because she sees you as needy and clingy. Take a break, try something new, find something to do that you feel excited about, do something you've always wanted to do but you've postponed over and over for whatever reason. Next thing to do is to make a personal challenge for yourself.

You THINK you're in love with this girl, that she's one in a million. But here's a news flash, even if you're one in a million there are still 6000 other people like you. Find new girls to hang around with and see for yourself if that girl you're "in love" with is actually your soul mate. Chances are, after dating 10 girls you'll find that out of those 10 girls you'll find one or two that were 10x better for you than that girl.

I think TL should take advantage of TL users' willingness to spend money to throw more contests and have more events.

This is a problem that happens in every thread. Even when the thread is only a page long. It's fucking ridiculous. Like that last ROFL thread that Undisputed made where he wrote a huge post about an article that was turned out to be completely falsified information. A few posters SPECIFICALLY noted that the article was taken down because it was bullshit with a link that explained it was put up by one of the posters... and like a post or two posts afterwards people posted as if they only read the thread title and were in agreement with Undisputed... even after Undisputed completely edited his post out.

It's fucking mind boggling how insanely uninformed and clueless a lot of posters are. It's the exact reason why you see some huge threads just repeat the same things over and over again. People don't give a fuck about what people have said before them. Pretty much posting for the sake of posting a lot of the time.

Based on that example and some others I've seen, that seems accurate. Although, I'm not sure what the reason behind it is. Maybe we have a lot of generous members and it carries over to extremes where it's unnecessary.

I agree that we could use the generosity for better purposes.

P.S. That made me laugh Warrior Madness. Totally counter-acted the bad feeling I had from posting on TL instead of studying.

I think that's a different issue though. I think that not reading the entire thread is a problem but separate. This case stands out for me because people are willing to donate money without (seemingly) knowing the entire story.

Edit: Double negative and poor sentence structure. Also didn't mean to double post.

To be fair though, you don't need to have any comprehension of mandarin to use Wfbrood, or rather, to use it's load source: youku. Just type in the game as you would in youtube, and you'll find it. There is of course the problem of the bad load time.

But don't they not understand the entire story of what they're posting about because they're not reading the thread thoroughly? I'm skeptical that these people even read the OP completely to begin with.

Yeah. My point with wfbrood is that it doesn't meet the standards that people now expect. Firstly, it's not in English so a lot of people are turned off. Secondly, it's seemingly harder to find what they're looking for. In fact, they just need a very simple guide. Thirdly, you mentioned load time.

Edit: I didn't state my point of view very well. I think wfbrood is a good substitute. However, a lot of people don't and those are some of my reasons why.

Yeah, definitely. I just discounted the fact that they're not reading the entire thing because they're willing to donate money. I find it absurd to even think of donating money if you don't know what you're donating it for.

It didn't surprise me though. You are full of shit all the time with your blogs anyway.

At least you're consistent. You should change your sig from "Conservative Forum Warrior" to "Disseminator of Outright Lies and Propaganda" though. You should also ask one of the mods to put your location as "Spin Alley" as well.

In the spirit of this thread let me not read the op, skim over the replies, randomly pic one and continue the derailing
I think it is a bad idea to get money from the userbase. It would mean an obligation for the admins i,were i an admin, would not want in the light of doing this freely and for fun. Can you image all the "we pay you, so we have a right to complain wugga wugga" posts?
edit: by people who do not donate ofc^^.

No need to get all high and mighty, it's not like your views are anywhere near the center. But we digress, I don't want to derail this anymore.

Edit: To the below! Was not intentional, just lazy source checking my bad!
