hi TL.

recently i've realized that i've kind of stopped getting new music to listen to so ...been stuck with the same stuff for a while. not that i don't like them anymore but you know it's nice to have some new music!

a few years back in high school and whatever i used to be totally obsessed with looking up the latest bands and whatever ALL the time and i quickly gathered thousands of mp3s haha so yeah i kinda miss that feeling. listening to the music i loved could really reflect my emotions or whatever.. haha.

is it just me growing up and becoming jaded or are most new bands pretty crappy

anyway i'm mainly a rock and electronica listener, you can get a rough idea of what i listen to from my Last.FM page at

http://www.last.fm/user/flafla

for 'rock' i actually listen to a wide variety of this genre...e.g. metal and 'emo' (ok not so much emo nowadays i think lol), hardcore, indie, weird experimental stuff are all good to me.

electronica is mostly trance and prog house/ trance ,not so much drum'n'bass and techno.

hope you guys can give me some new music/artists to obsess over :D:D :D:D

Alf, have you tried out Crystal Castles? I saw them randomly at Glastonbury 2008, and they make some pretty damn nice electronica.

You can check out my all-time listened list, it's filled with too many different genres, but you can pick pretty much anything from there and it should be good

I've been enjoying Neotokyo by Ed Harrison quite a lot of late. Kinda ambient and matrixesque feel to the album.

For your house, trance and electro listening pleasure, I recommend to you the mixes of Destruction of Sound, which you can listen to and download at http://www.dosmix.com. I am not sure about artists though.

Currently I am listening to the new Mos Def album 'The Ecstatic' and although it is neither rock nor electro, it has quite some influences from these genres. Don't know if you would like it but you should check it out.

Actually, Gorillaz is a damn good recommendation. Probably one of the favourite bands I've rediscoved in the last year or so. The whole story behind them are awesome too. Try to see if you can download their Demon Days Live DVD from somewhere. Damon Albarn is awesome. Also, if you're in the mood for some classic alternative rock, pick up a Supergrass album. Watching Hot Fuzz turned me onto them again, and they really are quite fun (get Caught by the fuzz from them if you can).

I've always considered Gorillaz a Music Project rather than a band. And Demon Days is an amazing achievement

Have you heard the Monkey: Journey to the West soundtrack yet? Damon Albarn was asked to compose the complete musical score for a Chinese opera, while Jamie Hewlett did the set, costumes, etc. I haven't seen the whole opera, only snippets, but the music is both bizarre and amazing. Can't believe that Albarn can compose something so different.

godspeed you! black emperor is also a strong recommendation
also consider The Field and for some prog rock, king crimson

but really, i firmly believe the best music in the world inevitably is classical
perhaps its worthwhile that you start to warm your ears to some of these
some rachmaninoff, chopin, messiaen, bruckner in your diet?

For the Modest Mouse recommendation, try some of their older stuff like Moon&Antarctica (so good)

I also recommend Boards of Canada debut

As for Gorillaz, if you like the singer, then check out Blur

I like The Knife, but their music vids creep me out

Btw Laika are very good, I was addicted to them in the winter. The problem is finding the songs in internet, cause the band is relatively unknown

Since noone else recommended any hardcore, I'll fill the void. Here's a few bands and what I feel are their best CDs.

Carpathian - Isolation
Comeback Kid - Wake the Dead
The Ghost Inside - Fury and the Fallen
This is Hell - Sundowning
Misery Signals - Controller

kekeke, you want to discover music? very simple , all you need to do is following those steps;

1- get a Big ASS hard drive (s) if you're not already equipped.

2- delete every software// P2P's // Audio players// other music listening apps etc... that you are using right now because they are completely useless.

3- install Soulseek

4- install Foobar

5- install the Last.fm plugin for Foobar.

6- occasionally check Wikipedia to find out more about some artist or genre.

7- Enjoy

Instead of doing this, you can try pandora.com where you can listen to similar songs of your favorites fast and easy.

Electric Six

They aren't particularly "new" but they are awesome, they are considered rock... but yeah... they are odd haha :D

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_Six#Sound.2C_style.2C_and_influences

"Songs by Electric Six are often concerned with subjects like starting a war, nuclear war, going to the store, human sexual behavior, masculinity, dancing, hypersexuality, fast food and fire".

The best new album I've heard in a while is by far "Traced in air" by Cynic. It's sorta metalish, but at the same time kinda chilled, in a beautiful experimental way, it's simply amazing. My favorite song from the album so far:

Edit: Isis is fucking amazing aswell.

The best new album I've heard in a while is by far "Traced in air" by Cynic. It's sorta metalish, but at the same time kinda chilled, in a beautiful experimental way, it's simply amazing. My favorite song from the album so far:

Kidcrash (math rock)
mewithoutYou (indie/post-hardcore)
Unwound (indie/noise)

<3 kidcrash. Especially on their EP, by far the best thing they ever recorded although it's kind of rare- I haven't had a date in 4 years goldie hawn

Husker Du's Zen Arcade is kind of like the line between hardcore, classic rock, and post hardcore.

Orchid's self-titled gatefold album is probably the best hardcore of the 2000's. (However, the CD mix is terrible. Find a vinyl rip if you can - not getting into a sound quality debate or anything, the mix is just objectively bad for that style of music). Chaosisme is a bit more popular.

Pageninetynine's Document #8 is Orchid's main competition for that distinction, but if you think of hardcore as "not screaming", then it wouldn't be your thing.

Portraits of Past's 01010101 (from 1994) is the best hardcore album ever made. (Obviously in my opinion - Minor Threat's out of step is close). Same caveat as pg. 99 though.

You might enjoy Elliot's photorecordings, they were one of the first bands to transition the hardcore scene to the more modern 00's emo sound, but they were never the whiny stereotype.

Yep their EP is definitely my favorite as well, but can't you just download it free off their website?

Document 8 and 01010101 are awesome too.

Puscifer: Maynard James Keenan FTW!

I don't think I've ever wished my opponent good luck prior to a game. When I play, I play to win. I hope every opponent I ever have is cursed with fucking terrible luck. I hope they're stuck playing underneath a stepladder with a black cat in attendance a

Minus The Bear are amazing, from that I can recommend a few:

The Most Serene Republic
Q and Not U (more fun hardcore, they split up but left 3 awesome CDs)
Thunderbirds are Now!
The Applessed Cast (more post-rock style indie, really good, Two Converstations is an album I definitely recommend)
