I used to have an Xbox Live account on the original Xbox. I got banned from Halo 2 for some reason (probably something to do with my terrible school network) so I canceled Xbox Live a few months before the Xbox 360 came out.

Last year I logged onto my old Xbox Live account (which should have been a free, Silver account) and realized I could play games online. It was pretty cool being able to play Halo 3 on my friends' Xboxes and not have to pay for it

Now today I got a message saying that I have to switch back to Silver

oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

Does anyone else know andyone who's gotten free xbox live?

Ummm...

You probably got a 12 month subscription. You got banned from Halo 2, but that doesn't mean you can't play Halo 3. You got a message saying you were switched back to silver cause the 12 month ran out.

new xbox 360s come with three months of free Live. you can play for one month, then you can reactivate it two more times
that may have been a christmas deal or something though

They just discontinued this with the recent dashboard update, as far as I'm aware.

Every once in a while, silver accounts get 48-hour gold trial privileges. Meaning that you can play some games, like Halo 3 online, but you can't play ranked matchmaking.

Everyone should just play Shadowrun. Silver accounts can play and it's probably one of the best FPS games on the 360.

I think Xbox live used to come with a free one month gold trial when you signed up for a silver account.

I'm not quite sure I understand why a major selling point (internet multiplayer) comes at additional cost to the Xbox. That is basically like having to pay to play your PC games multiplayer (MMO's are a different story of course).

As far as my experience with XBOX Live, I havent used it in aaaages but I just used to free month or whatever came with it. Was hoping you had beat the system though
