Hey teamliquid I just wanted to get your input on a slight problem that has presented itself to me.
In short, I've served on my high school's yearbook staff 2 years in a row now (there is a max of 3 as there is prerequisite course). I have the option of continuing next year, but as far as I can tell to do so would be very annoying as most of my friends have either quit or simply aren't enrolled in it. Also, I'm having increasing differences in opinion with our school's yearbook adviser. I know this person well and I think she would take it personally if I quit, which is not what I want at all.
On one hand I think it would look good on my record to have done this 3 years in a row and to stay in the favor of this teacher (I do need recommendation letters for college after all). The ensuing drama and fallout with the general organization of yearbook would not be pleasant as well. I fear that my leaving might have a bit of a domino effect as well, as I am one of the only returning seniors. But on the other, I don't want to do it if I'm going to be miserable the entire time and not have any fun. The alternative classes i could take would be newspaper/CADD, and CADD would actually look just a good as I'm heavy into science/engineering.
So really I'm kind of torn. I would gladly quit if it meant I could just flip a switch and have it changed, but it doesn't work like that. What do you guys think, should i just grow some balls and sit down with the adviser and explain this, or should I just suck it up next year?

Switch classes for sure, nothing worse than having to sit through a really awful class for an entire year.

Suck it up? Try not to think of it in that manner, I know how it is to sit through an awful class, but if you find some little things (i'm sure you know many, having been yearbook 2yr), or mentor somebody younger, you might actually have quite a lot of fun. Are you an editor or have a power position, etc?

Those are terrible reasons to stick with it. I guarantee you that putting 2 years of yearbook versus 3 years on your applications will have zero impact on whether you're admitted to a college, and the recommendation letter is negligible too. You can always have another teacher write one who may end up doing a better job anyway. There's no reason to be afraid of pissing the yearbook teacher off either - what can she possibly do to you?

See, one of the only reasons for sticking around was that I could possibly be editor in chief my senior year. Which I still could do.... I'm easily the most qualified candidate, but with the rest the courses I'm taking next year I definitely don't have the time nor do I want the responsibility.
As far as pissing the teacher off, thinking about it now if I quit in a respectful way and made sure she understood it had nothing to do with her personally (even though it somewhat does), it might be ok. I'm just going off her reaction to some friends of mine quitting, but they did so in a very annoying/rude way.

What other courses are you taking? AP?, etc.?

I would suggest talking to this yearbook adviser, try to get on her good side and then it will be much easier to be assertive in telling her your goals and that you guys need to work together on this stuff. If that doesn't work you can always give her an ultimatum. (And if your super baller, and she's like "Your giving ME an ultimatum?" Then you can tell her "Damn straight, and if you don't answer the way I want you to I won't be leaving alone.")
I do believe my advice got less and less reasonable as it went on, so I'd stick with the top bit. Unless you wanna be awesome, cuz I mean, mantoss would just do that shit off the bat.

i was in yearbook for all four years of high school and watched all the editor-in-chiefs burn out and (mostly) get into shitty universities.
take CADD :s

I'm in class right now lol, and I just talked to my adviser. She wasn't too upset, I think she knew it was coming somewhat. She said she obviously hoped that I would stay in and my continued presence meant a lot, seeing as I was a senior member and had been with her for 3 years. However she did say she respected my choice.
So we may stay on good terms which would be nice, because I'm assuming she still would need me to do various things these other retarded kids can't (I seem to be the only one able to operate photoshop or indesign with any apparent efficiency...).
Hmmm thanks for the advice though guys.
