I saw the first episode just now. I thought it was great. For old enthusiasts, it reintroduced a lot of familiar faces and yet it was fresh because it wasn't a complete repeat starting with the Lior events. The preview makes it seem like the pace will slow down and more background will be laid out for new viewers.

That's just so silly. BONES may be the authors of this reboot, but you're the author of your reality.

I'm going to watch this for sure. I know I'll be comparing it to the original run. I didn't read the manga either, so I'm pretty intrigued about what alternate explanations/plots happen. If I find that I don't like it (which I doubt will happen), I can stop watching it. Either way, it's not going to corrupt my memories.

The eric small kid complex and hughes with his awesome doughter are really getting really old.
Roy Mustang feels a bit lacking, but I'm not sure why. (If it is the voice change somebody mentioned or something else)
I'm hoping that the overlap between the original and remake stays low. At least that much is true in the first episode.

I am definitely going to watch this. The original FMA might not have been perfect, but it still easily qualified as one of the best animes of all time. Not to mention it actually had a quality english dub. But I am somewhat suprised, since this is the first time I have experienced a complete reboot of a series. Was there any problem with the anime having a different story (although I am all for being faithful to the original)? Also, did the manga actually finish for a reboot to be possible (I read a large part of it, but I stopped at some point)?

Anyway, one thing is certain (do not look if you did not watch the original/read the manga):

The manga is supposed to finish this year. It will definitely finish before the reboot gets to where it is now.

I've actually had some issues with the Shinsen-Subs version of the video. It seems to get choppy and the video screws up in the middle a couple times.

I did not notice any problems with the shinsen video. But I think eclipse has a better reputation, so I'll try their version for ep2. Chose shinsen because they were the only ones listed when I downloaded

Haven't got to compare the subs yet, but Shinsen tends to have more literal translations and Eclipse changing things into a language more normal for everyday English. Just waiting around to see what other groups will be subbing, until then raw is just fine...and way faster :p

Is it necessary to watch season 1 to understand season 2 or can it stand by itself?
I read your description of a reboot but for example, do you need to be familiar with the characters or anything else that is crucial to understanding the storyline?

I liked the FMA anime (the first one), but Anime's ending has to be one of the worst endings of an anime I've ever seen. So I'm looking forward to the reboot.

Nope, not necessary. I've been complaining about how it throws a bunch of characters very quickly at you, but in the long run, that shouldn't be an issue.

It starts from the beginning.

It'd be hard to start from just the fork, because while the same events happen before then, the order is somewhat different in the manga and anime.

the shinsen version works fine in some players for me, but not so well in others

probably something with how the mkv is containing the shit

Well, thats partially a problem of it being overdone in the old series, and not necessarily the fault of this series. They ought to at least present the joke a couple times, so that new viewers know that they're running jokes.
