(otherwise known as Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)

So the first episode of the series reboot has just come out, and it's fansubbed already. Here's the link.

http://www.zomganime.com/fullmetal-alchemist-2-brotherhood-episode-1/

FOLLOWING PARAGRAPH CONTAINS SPOILERS ABOUT THE FIRST SERIES ANIME... (in case you havent watched it but still intend to somehow?!?!??!?!?!)

For the uninformed, a series reboot is when previous material is disregarded and the series is started over. In the case of FMA, the first series anime deviated from the manga story about halfway through because the manga wasn't developed enough yet, and made up a bunch of stuff about Dante, Hohenheim, and Envy, and switched around alot of stories about the other homunculus and such. While the end result was still an excellent anime, this was completely different from the story of the manga, which had a different antagonist, backstory of the homonculus and philosopher's stone(s), etc. Therefore, series reboot!

Personally I like it so far. The fact that the animation team is the same is interesting and most of the first series voice actors reprised their roles (a notable exception is Roy Mustang). I like the song of the new OP, the animation quality is mostly the same but with some CG 3D effects, and the quality of the dialogue and story seems up to par so far. Thoughts?

EDIT: Bonus:
+ Show Spoiler [youtube version of new OP] +

Yes finally, i've just downloaded from torrentleech, haven't watched it yet but the op looks awesome =].
I've heard that Roy Mustang is really different (not only in his voice).

I loved Full Metal Alchemist the first time (Like 5-6 years ago) but I'm skeptical about this remake. I mean, why change something that was great already?

Um...?

Personally, I thought the manga was WAY better. At the very least its more self-consistent than the anime, which, starting around the halfway point, starts to have more and more plot holes and inconsistencies. It was still good, just that story-wise, it definitely feels a lot more rushed than the manga.

I do think that Toru Okawa should have done Roy Mustang again. Though, I suppose that Mustang's voice in the new series fits his personality in the manga a bit better (which is more serious than in the anime).

Oh, and the movie was a complete sham. Nothing useful happened, and it added to the number of internal inconsistencies (not to mention the amount of deus ex machina).

EDIT: OP, not that it matters, but some of the description about the original series might be a tad spoiler-y.

True, though there might be people who've read the manga but haven't watched the anime because they want to wait for the manga to finish.

That actually brings me to my only major quip with this first episode, which is that it doesn't seem to present a whole lot of background to the uninitiated. You're thrown right into the midst of the characters, who don't really get proper introductions. If one hasn't seen the first anime or read the manga, it could be overwhelming. I do like the fact that they used a plot that wasn't in either the manga or the first anime for this episode. It bugs me when animes start by perfectly mirroring the mangas they're based off of.

on the contrary, I thought that there were subtle introductions to each of the characters just by how they acted. + Show Spoiler +
You get a sense that Kimbley is evil but with unknown intentions so far, you get a hint that Bradley is in a position of power, has strange powers, and isn't exactly perfectly good. You get Hughes' familylovingweirdness, Mustang's air of officialness, etc etc etc.

Ok, I'll clarify... I think that when a Developer makes a movie, anime, or anything, they should be in it for the long haul. They should assume that everything they make is final, and needs to be judged without revision.

I understand that many people read the FMA manga, and that is great for them. Many however didn't (like me) and can't appreciate a revision of the anime. I can understand it's appeal to those who had issue with season 2 of the show (I'll admit, it did have some loopholes and it did get a bit confusing, Kind of like Lost right now) but the barrier for entry is now quite high for the series. What am I supposed to do with the memories of the show I've watched already? Do I just throw them away and accept this as a more perfect reality?

My major concern was with the fact that you get so many of those thrown at you in the span of about 20 minutes.

Off the top of my head, there's the brothers, Mustang, Bradley, Kimblee, Hughes, Armstrong, Lust, Gluttony, and the new guy, Isaac, all in one episode (though there's plenty of time to expand on them).

Except the series isn't meant to "replace" the old one. Reboots never are. Does the fact that the new Battlestar Galactica is different detract from the experience of the old one? Not at all. Its a fresh story, but with characters that you're already familiar with and the occasional hat-off to the old plotline.

yeah pretty much; i didn't watch the manga either but i can take a reboot EDIT: and yeah it's as theyango said, the character personalities are really similar, its just plot elements that are different

hell, casino royale was a reboot, was it that hard to watch? =.=;

great anime, but for me the ending didn't meet the expectations. The ending value is much lower than the overall quality, just like they didn't have the time to think about.
+ Show Spoiler +
a better ending would have been if alphonse got his body back, but edward remained the same.
It would have been a good compromise between the brothers struggle&hopes, but at the same time keeping a greater justice sense; a half way between geting nothing or geting all back.

let's see how it develops. gonna watch it anyway

isn't the actual ending the same as you describe???

i hate the opening of this fma. maybe it's because i generally dislike those type of songs.

Hrm, Edward sounds just like Ueki from Law of Ueki.

I need to confirm this.

Edit------
Damn i'm good. It is

they should remain in the same world, that story with the parallel world was so dumb
You get your body back, but you get separated from your brother; very frustrating and doesn't fit the rest of the story

thanks for pointing that out, I remembered there was something I didn't like and now I remembered exactly
