so.. ive had my Fender Jaguar bass for about a year and decided to finally get new strings ...
*pauses for gasps
now... grabbed some Power slinky cause a friend said they were good and slapped them on...
omg... so bright... im hoping this disapears a little
anyway... just curious if I have to have it re-"setup" cause i believe the strings to be a different gage... and dont really know if that affects the whole attenuation or w/e... for all those bass gurus out there...

|
I've had the same strings on my 12 string for about... 1 year and a half. They still sound fantastic, however i really think its time to get a new pair -_-.
|
I have a classic guitar and i need to swap them every half year. frustrating because after winding i have to wait a week before the strings are stable in sound..
but new strings to play very good when they are tuned well
|
char* myNewString = "string1"; std::string myOtherString = "string2";
|
I had the same strings on my guitar for ~20 years, they are rusty and hurt my fingers.
So I smashed the fucker and lit it on fire while getting high and camping with a friend. Was sick.

If you put on strings of a different gauge, you have to do some adjustments to fix the intonation.

Fixing intonation is really, really easy. I think the biggest problem with electric guitar/bass players is that they're too afraid to set up their own instruments. Electric guitar/bass is so stupidly simplistic and forgiving that I think everyone should learn how to adjust the bridge saddles and truss rod, when needed.
If the change in string gauge wasn't very drastic and you like the current action and the strings don't fret out anywhere on the neck, then all you'll really need to do is adjust the bridge saddles to fix the intonation. It takes some time to do, but it's very simple and paying money to adjust an electric bass because you changed string gauges is just an absolute waste of money.

i use uncoated(superior tone) tho good bass strings are really fucking expensive, lol i know i wouldnt be able to change them twice a week
|
i havent changed my nylon strings since november-december last year. its not so bad that i can be bothered wasting money, the intonation and sound is still good enough for me. just change em when they break or get impossible to tune
|
LOL.
I change my guitar strings every day, electric and acoustic.
Order them in bulk, $50 for 50 sets.
|
The fuck? Totally unnecessary and a waste of money. And where in the world do you get 50 sets of strings for 50 dollars?
|
They are probably dental floss and hair.
pointless yes.

1 dollar string sets.
lollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

Be careful with the truss rod. If you -really- fuck it up, it's really hard to fix. Generally, just don't touch it unless you HAVE to, and even then, the neck reacts to truss rod twists pretty slowly, and you should only do one quarter-turn per day, set it aside for a day and check it, and repeat that.
|
1 minute per string including tuning it to pitch.
changing strings is a great chance to show off!
|
Actually, if you did mess with your truss rod, you're probably going to have to do more adjusting tomorrow after the neck moved about.
|

oh well .. but it really did need to be changed... i played a friends bass and it was soo much easier to play and my fingers werent as stressed after messing around on it...
now mine feels about the same as his... but that quarter turn thing... ill be sure to remember that...

I think by attenuation you mean intonation?

Thankfully my bass is one of those beginner basses that comes in those cheap starter kits, so I'm not all that worried about fucking it up.
Also for anyone too lazy/cheap to buy new strings. I've found that a good way to clean them is to get a bucket of warm water+about a cap full (or tablespoon) of tile cleaner. Just soak the strings in the bucket for about a minute, then rinse and dry them well. Should add on another month or two before the strings start going dead.
You could also boil them...but I've heard that it only makes them sound new for a day or so before they go really dead.

I was looking at this sorta stuff before i bought a new set... i heard things from Denatured alcohol to putting them in the washing machine then Baking them

I change my electric guitar strings once every two months (or when there's a lot of gunk on them). Changing gauge on a trem is annoying. I had to add a spring to use my heavy bottom slinkies well T_T
Edit: I just realized you play bass and not guitar. Most bass players I know don't change their strings until they break xD. Life's tough for a bass player.

I never understood why bass string was so much more than guitar strings.
