So where to start first? The Berkeley game theory of course! So I printed out the outline and referenced it in my speech. The audience particularly liked the part about needing Differential Equations and Calculus to "fully understand this course".
Next, I got a little short interview with Tasteless on Facebook. Nothing special, just asked him how he was adjusting and got some numbers about attendance and so fourth. He couldn't legally give me too much information, but enough information to absolutely flabbergast the people ignorant to a professional Starcraft scene or eSports in general.
So I mentioned this was a media speech.. So naturally I was required to have a Powerpoint/Video clips/ELMO projected photos. So I decided to do two videos and a Powerpoint. When choosing my video I was still going for the stunning effect. So I used Jaedong vs Fantasy, I used about a 30 clip of it where it goes into Jaedong's FPVOD. I used this in support of "what makes an eSport", supporting the "mechanics" or handspeed required to play at such a high level. For my next video I used a small excerpt from the Berkeley class, just showing how many people where actually taking this class and that it indeed was no joke.
I know this is very disorganized, but I don't feel like going back and editing it to improve it. But my main points where What is an eSport and What makes and eSport, eSport's effect on foreign culture(mainly about Korean pro teams/starleagues, this was definitely the most surprising to everyone), eSports (possible)growth in the United States(mentioning Tasteless, NonY, and IdrA in Korea. I elaborated on what NonY gave up going to Korea to make it more dramatic, though I didn't mention he came home), and gaming conventions in the United States(WCG/BlizzCon).
Anyways.. I could elaborate more but I don't feel like it right now. If you want more info on the speech itself I'd be more than happy to post more about it.
But on to the part that actually got me to post this. So I got my speech back today all excited. I mean my speech went very well. Everyone was giving me crazy WTF looks and asking questions like: "Are you serious?" "People actually do that for a living?" "That many people go and watch people play a computer game?". Yeah, you can imagine the smile it gave me. So, back to getting my speech back. I pick it up and read it, the damn thing was like an inch thick from all the research I'd done on it, our teacher requires we turn in all resources down to photo copying pages from the books we referenced. So I look down and see a purple 69. I'm like what the hell is this?
I make a double take to make sure it's mine but is not mistakeable by the size of the packet. So I continue to read down the page. I skim through the rubric and see nothing but Superior(the max credit you can get) on all aspects. Including the vocal pitch/delivery, research, Introduction, relevance and a few others, it's not in front of me atm.
Anyways the only thing I got bad marks on was my conclusion which I got a weak on because of my abrupt ending(ran over time). The speech is marked to be a 6-8 minute speech. I found myself being on the foreign culture with eSports around the 5 minute mark and could have been there for much much longer, same with any point in the speech. Anyways, I hurry myself along not wanting to skip out on anything. So I run over by 23 seconds with the timer frantically waving a red STOP note card at me... Ah, fuck all the details. I got a fucking 69 because I went 23 seconds over on my speech! WTF is that shit? I get max marks on EVERYTHING but 1 and get a 69 because I did too much? Fuck that, she simply told me "it is clearly stated in the rubric".
Mind you I got a 95 on my last speech about the history of Eminem. The person sitting next to me was bitching brandishing an 89 on her paper asking if it would hurt her overall grade. Her speech sucked, good thing she doesn't know much about her topic, Dyslexia, because we couldn't take much more of her bare minimum 6:02 time. Anyways, I don't need to attack her, it's not her fault.. But I'm kind of tweaked about it. Which I don't know why I'm posting it here, I'll get much worse criticism here. Anyways, before flaming me about some point of this, remember I was at least spreading the world of Starcraft. Anyways, happy reading.
