But I spoke to a friend of mine telling him how things had turned out for me and that things would only get tougher. Then he said "Tough times don't last. Tough men do."
Then it all made sense. It made sense to defend this country.

My understanding is that people should be proud of things they HAVE done (like I am a vet and I am damn proud and happy when a patient is getting better), not my things they have read about being done 50-100-1000-2000 years ago (like being proud cause of a battle where the bulgarian troops led by Tzar Simeon raped the Byzantium army at Anchialus in 917). Why be proud of that? Bottom line is shitload of people died there for the imperial interests of both countries... Or you, the Russians being proud of defeating the Nazis back in 1945... I can understand the actual soldiers thinking "Wow we raped the mightiest army in Europe, we rock" but a modern Russian boasting over it is pitiful. Or "Hey you know I am proud cause Tolstoi is one of the best writers in the world!". It does not matter nowadays what nationality he had, get over it already!

But how can you be proud of a bunch of people you don't even know of, and that just happen to be born inside your territory? I can also understand that you like your culture, and history, etc. But do you think countries go to war so as to protect their culture and history? The answer is no, millions of people die in wars with mainly other interests (economic, etc.) which have nothing to do with culture at all. It is to create an identity for otherwise really bland people. What if you were a loser and had nothing else than your nationality?
