Hi,

Im looking at buying a computer from Dell, I was hoping that some of you guys could give me some feedback on the system that the Dell rep recommended I buy.

Im not really familiar with any of this stuff but im sure its better than my Pentium 2 back home, anyway:

Base
Intel(R) Core 2 Due Processor E7400 (2.8GHz, 1066FSB, 3MB)

Hard drive
500GB SATA 3.0 Gb/s hard Drive with Native Command Queuing.

Memory
6GB (2x2GB/2x1GB) DDR2 SDRAM 800 MHz Memory

Operating system
Pre-loaded Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit SPI

Optical drives
16x DVD+/-RW with dual layer white capabilities

Sound
Integrated 7.1 channel

Speakers
Dell A525 Stereo speakers with subwoofer

Video card
512MB ATI Radeon HD4670 + CD kit.

The price for all of this is
$1,733.60 AUD so in American that is $1,171.15 USD

Can anyone tell me if this system is good value?

Forgot to add it does come with a 23 inch widescreen flatpanel monitor

I'm not sure how much computer costs in Australia. I'm assuming the price does not include a monitor. I could get a computer with a similar configuration online without the graphics card for $400 before tax. Dell will charge you $200 for the graphics card. You could buy the video card aftermarket for $80. But still, $350 + $200 = $600. In America, that system is a very expensive for what it has. But I don't know how things are in Australia.

You can find em for alot cheaper, i have around the same setup as yours and got it for 1100$ custom made

Have you got a 22" LCD? it would go great with it its about 250 bucks, Dell ones are great esp if your a graphic/media user or like little details to shine

640gig is more value than 500gig imo :p

If you have 24" > and is savvy with high end resolutions then Radeon 4870 is perfect for that, anything below is overkill and 4850 is GREAT.

if you have time..i would build a computer. I built one with
E8400 3.0 ghz dual core
4 gb RAM
geforce 9600gt
32x ? DVD+/-RW drive
640 gb hard drive

for around 650 after tax

also..6 gb ram is kinda unnecessary, i rarely use all 4gb of my ram

AFAIK that looks pretty good. From what I know that's a pretty good graphics card and can play most games out there. The computer specs look pretty good and and a free 23" monitor is always nice.
Worth it IMO, but I don't know too much about computer specs, so take this with a grain of salt.

thats like 900-1100 in au dollars ;> (includes case + psu)

but yeah it sounds he wants Dell, and its nice, go for it.. Its worth the effort to get custom but in the end its the same

edit: not just the same, it has more sentimental value and you know your pc inside out if you custom it
