So right now, I need to know how to

1) Record a skype conversation. I want to allow people to call in w/ starcraft questions so that I can record the conversation and post it!

2) Record a FPVOD w/o lagging the shit out of my computer. Any good free software n' stuff?

I'm going to continue to poke around for these two things (haven't looked for #2 much so I probably shouldn't post yet, but whatever! hahaha)

ty in advance

1) is always a bit tricky, but give audacity a shot? If you have a 3rd computer it's pretty straightforward though.

2) you can prolly use LP.net's guide to using camstudio.

1) yeah i think audacity will record what you say and what you hear without having to do any fiddling around with the settings. it's a small, simple, free program. and i think it'll do the compressing too

2) i've had the best results with hypercam. never heard of anyone's comp lagging with it. this is opposed to camtasia, fraps, and some other one im forgetting the name of, for which i've heard of lag problems from all

1) Just to throw a second opinion I'd recommend using ventrilo. Sure it isn't audacity, but its easy to use, you dont have to mess with your settings to get it to record you and what you hear, and it has an export to wav function to recordings.

2) Comp lagging ~~ I'm pretty sure its just an issue with your processor and RAM. I tried hypercam and camtasia etc on my old computer with 2.4 ghz single core 512 mb ram and wasn't able to record but when i upgraded to dual core, 4 gb of ram I could record really well. If you posted your computer specs maybe it would be easier to pick a program, I use camtasia for recording pure video and it works pretty well. Really there are 3-4 programs that work well, as long as you have a program just find someone you know who does them and have them walk you through setting it up --

To throw a couple more things out there, I'd love to see some FPVODs from you, even if I don't play zerg your strategical insight is deep as fuck, something that a lot of the people who do fpvods dont have. They can fly around at 250 apm and do everything they need to and communicate it but dont really explain the thought processes behind it. Also I joined your game on iccup but you either wouldn't play me because I was a rank under or you were afk =(

I don't think you can record it properly with audacity. Basically in order to talk in skype you need recording set to mic, but to record in audacity you need it set to stereo mix. You would need a special program to record them --
http://www.extralabs.net/skype-recorder.htm
I'm not sure if this is supported or legit anymore, but it worked at one point IIRC. If not just go through the google list of "record skype calls free" and try them out until you find one that works.

Yes, you need an external program or a thrid party. You can record yourself, or everyone else. So for TL projects we usually have someone else in Vent idling and recording. For Skype we use an external program to record like the one petzergling linked.

Xfire.com has a new sick video streaming thingy for games, I have no idea how well it blends with starcraft, but that might be worth checking into. Keep up the good work Day!

This is so true i had to fumble around with my friends trying to get one computer to do it all for us but it could only take so many record inputs at once we would get the pc sound recoding but somehow one program would switch another program to only record the pc sound when we wanted it to record our voices such a pain.

As for recording Camstudio really depends how shitty your computer is and how big you are recording. For sc a decent size screen you don't need a strong computer to make a fpvod just set it to take in 24fps isntead of 30 if it lags at 30 just keep cutting you can cut fps down to about 12 before it just becomes just jumping screens

I take issue with that using a MPEG-4 Parts 10 in AVI requires a hack or tricking avi to accept it as was shown it's usually a bad thing ftw mode sucks big time might as well use xvid.

1. H.264 in AVI requires some hacks.
2. Not all players support these hacks.
3. All players which do support these hacks will support better containers, like MKV and MP4. Thus, the subset of players which support H.264 in a proper container is a strict superset of those which support it in AVI.
4. AVI usually requires larger overhead than MKV, especially with VBR audio tracks(vbr mp3, aac).

Anyone that uses H.264 in .avi and says they are quality encoders people take issue with. Which is why there are complaint forms about dattlebayo calling them selfs a quality fan subber but hey they release decent quality pretty fast although some groups are faster and better quality due to softsubs but dattlebayo lives in their own little world worried about plagiarism or something.

I actually have found a way to record what you hear as well as what comes through you microphone - without two sound cards. It takes a lot of messing around with Stereo Mix and waveout/wavein on Audacity. For Skype I have used an external program in the past which has worked fairly well, I'm not on my own comptuer at the moment so I'm not sure of it's name but I'm interested to see what other people are using. My program sometimes would stop recording the conversation midway through(but not too often).
Camtasia seems to be the best recorder for me, Guncam kept crashing my computer (I'm using Vista). I was able to find a free version of Camtasia online pretty easily (but it wasn't legal fyi, Camtasia costs quite a bit of money afaik).

Camstudio cost nothing and works on same principle and just about same performance esp if you use the techsmith codec which is free to use although i perfer uncompressed it's what extra hdd's are for.

Did you decide what program you're going to use for screen capture Sean?
