I am buying a new desktop computer because my current laptop is very bad, and is basically only good for internet browsing and writing word documents.

I have no idea how to build a computer myself so I would would way rather buy one, after looking through some on the Best Buy site I found one that could be acceptable. Just wondering what other more techy people think of it.

It's a wireless adapter. the b/g/n simply means that it supports Wireless B, Wireless G, and Wireless N routers.

That's more than enough to run SC2. If you want to use that as a gaming rig, I would replace the graphics card. Also, are you sure you want to get a refurbished one?

What the hell does refurbished mean when refering to a computer??

Also I thought that the graphics card was pretty good, am I wrong? I don't know very much about graphics cards.

Means it either has been returned or was used as a store model. As long as there is a good warranty and they tell you the reason why it was refurbished, you should be fine.

Do you suggest, that I don't get a refurbished one?

If you are using this for a home computer (and assuming you don't do anything that requires a PC that has kickass specs), it will be more than enough

I'm not really a tech savvy, but the specs are very good, and should be able to run most games smoothly

This build needs a LOT of changes imo. What is your price range 1k for just the tower?
For sure you don't want a 9 series geforce. Get any a 260 or better.

assuming the american : canadian exchange rate is close that is a pretty expensive computer.

http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/desktop-studioxps-435mt?c=us&cs=19&l=en&ref=dthp&s=dhs

i7 core for the same price (in USD at least) and not refrubished, the choice is easy.

although the graphics card is no where as good on the dell, overall the computer is of far better value a decent video card will cost you around $150 and if you just wait for sc2 to come out before you buy it it'll be better.

Shipping & Handling?
He could drive to best buy to pick up the comp he mentions above instead of paying an extra $$
but yeah i7 for same price[exluding s&h] is pretty baller

shipping and hadling would come out to 2% of total purchase price max. it shouldnt even be a factor as these two computers are no where near comparable.

can games or software even make use of a quad core? do you need 720 gigabyte HDD? If the answer to both is no, then go to a mom's and pops and tell them to build you a top of the line core 2 duo with a smaller hard drive. you can install your own os. you'd save a couple of hundred dollars i think.

edit: on second thought, looks like quads and duos are similarly priced wtf? and harddisk are dirt cheap.

edit2: having compared prices, i think it's better to go to a local and get them to assembly the parts you want, it's cheaper and you get better parts and brand new.

Yea, it seems to me that computers have made huge progress in the last few years. My current laptop is terrible bad and i bought it for around the price of 1200. I cannot play most games on it actually, like I can't play cod2 and I can't run wow very well either (10 fps ).

hardware is usually ahead of software, so it's not like you can automatically use whatever new cpu that comes out every month. I think a core 2 duo is more than enough but the price diff. between quad and core isn't that much, 30-40 dollars i guess.

still, go to a store and get them to build it for you. It'll be brand new and you get a much more advanced computer.

you know windows 7 is basically vista with a few fixes right? i find it interesting how people abhor vista like it killed their family yet praise windows 7 for its greatness when the two are more similar than different. doesnt make any sense to me.

yeah, they charge like 20-30 dollars but so do the best buy stuff they just include that in the price. if you you need the pc quickly, buy the bestbuy, if you can wait a week do some research on the parts you really want and then buy em from mom and pops.

researching the parts sounds fun actually, so I think I will do that, although I don't know about computers much so i might fuck up on some things such as getting a processor that isn't compatible with something.

I don't use it, but it's very expensive and some people seem to have trouble with it. it also seems to be a resource hog. If you have to pay for a new OS and it's over a 100$ it better be something excellent.

I also heard that Microsoft would let Vista users upgrade, but definately not for free. I heard it'll be 50$ but who knows?

Vista doesn't suck it's just fine the person running vista sucks that's the problem. You never hear people compling how annoying to get shit working on linux is, is becuase they are willing and know how to go the extra mile to get shit running just fine and don't fuck shit up.

If you are just looking to run wow that one would run it great. Only porb is refrubished can mean alot of things just get a warranty for awhile i just find refrubished= used HDD if it makes a noise that doesn't sound like a scraping of a fan when you turn it on ask them to replace the HDD it's obviously been used way too much. I would benchmark your parts to see if they been used in a suscide benchmark. Refrubished is fine as long as you can check it's performence computer parts not overclock can easly last 15 years 5 years if they are overclocked.

Only porb with that computer and running wow is the 9800GT is limited to 512mb which can be just fine for like 19" moinor at 22 24 it may be limiting although in WoW more fps problems can be caused by slow internet then slow computer.

It's not hard to build a computer now of days puting one other is really easy. The hardest part of putting everything toghter is where to plug power, reset, usb and sata ports from the computer case to the motherboard. Else everything is just plug it into the slot that looks right. I would recommend Vista just so you dont have to deal with a crappy floppy drive for achi with sata.

really you just need to tell us what you will be using it for with various degress of importance if games which games nvidia and ati perform differently in some games they are = and cpu and ram is more imporant in certian games and we can recommend you a build.
