We had our 6 day field camp just this week and it has indeed been a really memorable one. I got a feel of what its like to not take a shower for 5 days and adapting to life in the jungle. Apart from that, I got to see the inner characters of my fellow mates. Most good, few bad. You really get to see how people really are in moments where you are so tired and you need to get things done.
The camp started off with an 8km march to our camp site. We carried over 20kg weights containing my field pack and my rifle. Marching was tough and somehow, it wasn't getting any easier as we covered ground. The pace started picking up and it soon became a really fast-march.
My mind soon switched to a motion of "just one more step". We walked over a rocky ground and my back was aching. My shoulders and neck had abrasions.
Over the course of the next few days, we learnt many battle skills and there was much pressure from commanders and it was rather tough at some points. Having to do so many push-ups in a day and having to cope with shouting commanders was rather difficult to handle. Its only a 6 day camp.. yet it felt like an eternity. A day in that island feels like 3 days on mainland.
I don't really have that much to say about camp right now but there's moments like these where I really don't wish to go back to camp because of all that stressful lifestyle where there's really not much that us recruits can do because there are superiors over us. If they're unreasonable, then that's what we get.. no chances and no fairness sometimes. But perhaps its still better than many other situations out there now.. like the soldiers fighting in the Iraq war.. or the soldiers involved in the conflict at Gaza.
Sometimes I wish I didn't have to go back.
