Yes Sir! I usually just quote when not replying to the OP or when I reply to parts of the op.

when replying in a thread, you really don't need to quote the original poster's post and then write what you were going to write. i think it's a given that you're replying to the OP. just saves space and makes it easier to read and easier on the eyes.
thanks I agree

i agree if the discussion is on the first page or something, but in a longer thread i don't see that it's a bad thing to quote the OP (unless it was an essay or something).
i usually just do a "@OP" if my comment is unrelated to the direction the thread took.

I think if you do a multi-quote reply, this format is perfectly fine and makes your answer more structured.

I wholeheartedly disagree and I think your idea is dangerous and is threatening the very foundation on which this forum is built. I don't want to live in a world where my quoting the OP is frowned upon and I hope your supporters will see the light and realize your extreme agenda will bring nothing but destruction and chaos. You are either too naive to see the disastrous consequences of your proposal or you are evil to the core and want to take advantage of the ignorant and educationally challenged to further your fringe fundamentalist posting rules.

Well, I agree with this sometimes and others I don't, it's very common for your post to be replying to another poster whom is closer to you than the OP however even then it is usually pretty obvious that you're not talking about the OP when it's like this
OP Lol I like cars.
Random Dogs smell funny.
Yeah dogs do smell funny.
Obviously not directed to the OP. I don't really mind it that much but it can be annoying when the OP is like 50 pages long.
|
Sometimes I do it b/c the conversation sometimes wonders off to something off topic of some sort and I just wanna directly speak to the op. Although when I have quoted the op(which might been more then a few times) I still sometimes second thought myself that why I am doing it b/c it is sort of redundant. Should be more like common sense that you are replying to the op. Then again sometimes a topic that has more then a few pages can be back and fourth in discussions between users. I as well will try not to do it anymore.

I agree to an extent, although it's sometimes nice to still quote the OP if, as Kennelie mentioned, the discussion gets sidetracked and the poster wants everyone to know that his/her post is in reference to the original topic.
On February 06 2009 21:11 pyrogenetix wrote: when replying in a thread, you really don't need to quote the original poster's post and then write what you were going to write. Also it could work if you want to reply to just a specific part of the OP. This works imo because if you were to not quote the OP at all and it was a fairly length post, then other people might not understand exactly what you're replying to.
I realize my example sucked since everything in the OP was on the same topic...but eh, hope I made my point.

I dont think its that big a deal
what if youre OP is 5 pages long and I want to address it?
either the reader has to memorize the entire 5 page OP, or they have to flip back and forth between pages whenever they are unsure what I'm referring to

lol, let's just do exactly what the OP is trying to say bothers him. It's what all the cool kids do!

I think its a good thing in general so that we have a pristine, unedited, OP for all time. When it happens multiple times though thats not good.
