So I just got the call from my mother this morning that my father got laid off from IBM. He's worked there for literally as far back my memory stretches. He's been putting in tons and tons of hours, late nights, weekends, etc and to see him get this as his reward is just crushing.
I don't know what else to say, I just feel scared and worried. My family has never been in this position before in my lifetime and it feels awful, like a sinking feeling in my stomach that just makes everything look grim. I feel particularly bad since I know my job makes shit for money so I can't really help much and I won't get a chance to really move up for another 3-4 months at least. I guess you can add helpless to the list of feelings.
Sorry to rant, just needed to vent. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there that have been through rougher times or still are but I just needed to get this out. Thanks.

Aww, that sucks man. So many companies throwing away valued employees opposed to new members, where the majority don't care a significant amount about the job. I can't really... relate first hand, but I know some people that are in similar situations. You'll pull through, don't worry =).

That sucks. I hope you can find solace and knowing that this isn't an isolated incident and people all over the country are losing there jobs left and right.

Other people's problems don't make yours any easier, you don't have to apologize. This economy is so scary, jobs that seemed so safe are in jeopardy all over the country, hell all over the world. I hope your Dad lands on his feet.

sorry to hear this man..
Yesterday alone 71k jobs were cut off... Caterpillar laid off 20k jobs themselves. It is the times man. Hopefully your father will pick himself up and recover. I know the pressure you feel and the scary unstable times.. I feel for you bro. Best you can do is put your head to the grindstone and keep on chugging. Be there for your father and let him know you have faith in him and support him.
You guys will make it!

I have a similar experience. My dad's business that he ran with his brothers for his whole life went bankrupt a year or so ago. He's been working for minimum wage while my mother worked also. Been a little rough, but he's started a new job ands things are looking a little better for them now.

They let him go because students just out of college don't require/expect as much pay.
Same thing happened to my dad 6-7 years ago. We went 5 and a half years without pay. Still working on getting out of major major major debts and the several mortgages.
Best of luck to you and your family!

Change can be a good thing, maybe your father will get a better or more fulfilling job for himself.
You've got to think possitive cause negative thoughts help no one.

O crap, I read "father got laid."
I'm sorry for your father losing his job. I'm sure he'll find another job as the economy gets better. And IBM gives away generous leave packages, don't they?

tell him to work at microsoft, hes got the years and experience.

A mod could change it to "My father got laid off" and it would be "My father got laid..." on the sidebar.
The economy is in a rough shape right now. There are going to be lots of layoffs in the near future. At times like these I'm glad I'm a student and also that I have a government job.

My dad hasn't been laid off (yet :S), but due to the bad economy he probably won't be getting bonuses and as much pay as before so I don't know how he's going to pay for 4 kids going to private school. I'm a uni student now so my expenses are low (and I didn't go to private school) but it's so expensive, over £1000 a month per person, what the hell O_o? Not worth it at all!

Luckily my parents are both employed and are unlikely to ever get laid off (don't have that many years left to work anyway), but I distinctly remember how the husband of my day mother (it was years after I stopped having a day mother, but the couple has remained great friends with us), who was a carpenter at some furniture manufactory, got laid off (and the manufactury eventually closed down a few years later) after having worked there for 20+ years. They had built a house (he had done much of the work on it himself), were paying back a loan they had taken for the house and had a kid still in school. I saw him crying, and he's a tough man & hard worker, I'll never forget that...
I don't know how they managed in between, but he eventually got another job (and has had different jobs since then) and they still live in their house.
So yeah, best of luck to you (or your dad rather)!

My mom used to work for IBM years ago, and was even trained by them to be one of a select few trained on some editing method in canada. Her project had massive layoffs worldwide for IBM and she got roasted. Thing is, She got severance pay. If he has been there for eons, he should be in the same boat and have been given a rather large sum of money for the trouble, which will put you in the clear hopefully till he finds another job.
I know with us, she went like 6 months without a job, picked up some contract jobs, then finally got a fulltime position with RIM.
So if he is good at what he does, and that dedicated, he will get insanely good references, and hopefully find a job quickly (ontop of that he should have severance to make ends meet for awhile).

Thanks for the kind words everyone.
As for his severance package, IBM "used to be" very generous. With the way the economy has been and all the cut backs, he's lucky to be getting anything at this point. It's much much smaller than it used to be. He's just happy he qualified for some limited medical coverage.

I hope your father gets another job soon.

Sorry to hear mate. My dad's been out of work for almost 6 years now ever since Sun Microsystems/ CISCO laid him off.
|
Sorry to hear that man. I got laid off too but I don't have a family to worry about so I'm in a slightly better position. I hope everything works out!
|
Sorry to hear that.
I sincerely hope he finds a job soon.
