I need to answer this question for a university application, and I had some ideas but I thought this would be a great idea to see what interests people about science. Also it would help me write the essay a lot.

I just started brainstorming now and this is what I have so far. (I need to finish this rush time I only have like 2 days to right it)

-I would most likely start off by stating what the definition of science is. "Science is the effort to discover, and increase human understanding of how the physical world works."

-So basically science is a means of finding knowledge concerning the physical world.

-I could say that I like discovering new things about science so I don't have to live my life in ignorance of all the laws governing the physical world.

-I could say that I would like to discover new ways to advance technology to help the human race progress.

Please post a reason that you like Science, even if it's complete bullshit.

The material you have so far seems really boring.

First off, don't use the word science. Use natural philosophy. Second, understand what natural philosophy is. And that is objectivity.

Now describe why you like objectivity. Is it because truth is objective?

Some things I like about science that you could adapt to talk about...

1) By studying and eventually understanding the physical laws which dictate our universe, you become able to project into the future what will happen (ex: if you know how gravity works, and how air resistance works, you can calculate where a mortar will land and then try it to see if it worked)

2) Learning science allows you to better understand the hows and whys of everyday life, and in ways you wouldn't even expect until you go ahead and learn more science.

3) Learning science means you aren't are pussy humanities major.

Some question that I liek to ask myself about science:

1- When did the time begin.. like before or right at same thime that the the big-bang append...
2- If black hole absorb information (ligh, time, anything..), do white hole exist and if yes, how can they create information. (read that from a book of Stephen Hawking )
3- How can a mutlitude of atome can make thing such as a plante or a human
4- How the brain can store information for a long period of time.( I know a bit how the memory work but I still canèt figure how u can remember thing that have append like 20 year before...)
5- How the life got created.. I mean I know what is the first organism which convert the CO (or CO2 not sure) into oxygen so the life could grow but how They did exist.... Mix of some "non-living" material created a living "maretial" ...

I could continu a lot more but.. that's enough for now :D lol

I wouldn't define science if I were you.

Remember people @ uni aren't stupid, they know what science is. Not to mention, when you get to uni, you will notice that the word "definition" in itself is kind of subjective sometimes (I have heard different definitions of the "science" compared to your definition), so be careful when you are defining a word to people who are experts in the subject. Not to mention if you are going to get into that definition stuff you gotta do citations, etc, SKIP IT.

This type of answer would have worked in highschool, and it's not necessarily BAD to define science, but I still wouldn't put that in there.

Say what you truly like about science. If you are suited for science then your answers should be good enough.

Also I would mention how it can relate to a job opportunity. They want to see students graduate, so try to slip that in there.

Just remember don't try to sound like a textbook, just be a real student. They aren't looking for the best written essay, b/c in general the more textbook it seems usually the more fake it is. They are looking for honest students who are genuinely interested in science and pursuing science.

Hope that helped

if ur going to write a definition, be original.. they want ur opinions, something more personal too. I doubt that a conformist or standard reply will help you, u want to favorably raise eyebrows

Science is all about the wonder/excitement/enchantment about the unknown. It attracts a rare breed of people who seek to find truths and are never content with partial understanding. They must delve further into the mystery and uncover more truths about the world. Typically a person can never comprehend the magnitude of any one discovery; that is left up to the world to interpret. Those who live in the world of science must be content with knowing that their work should fuel or fill their thirst, for those who cannot invariably perish.

yeah starting essays with a definition is really cliched and comes off as you trying to be "unique" but doesn't really work

There was a recent thread on the concept of biological immortality, and how certain species don't age - that's a pretty fascinating cutting edge science topic.

I agree that if you want to start with a definition of science it must be original - whether or not it's a good idea to do so entirely depends on how well you pull it off.

Try not to think of this as writing an essay topic, try to think of it as simply writing down what you think. If you do not really think anything, then spend some more time brainstorming before you start to write. Then simply write down your thoughts, and then later organize and clean them up.

Hope this helps a little : )

Actually, while this was probably written as a joke, I would seriously go with this. Obviously it gives you a rather unique angle which is something that's all too often missing from application essays (I should know.. oh and for god's sake please don't start with a definition). Think about the "necessities" of modern life and how many of them wouldn't be here if it wasn't for science. Same goes for popular hobbies, etc. Whether you want to specifically mention SC or not is up to you.

the

This was wayyyyy more funny than it should have been.

Actually is not a bad idea though. My recommendation is to do that to just get some words on that page. Filling up all that blank space with some black is a good start, even if all your wrote was "Science cured the plaguuuuuu"

1. When you're doing science (at least when you are doing it correctly), you're trying to figure out something no one has ever been able to figure out before. It's kind of inspiring. Every so often you'll see some data, and understand something new from it, and you'll realize you're maybe the only person on the planet at that time who is privy to the information contained within. It doesn't happen often, at least for some result that's extremely consequential, but when it does, it's a feeling like nothing else.

2. Even if it's something nearly inconsequential, any new scientific discovery is essentially irreversible. Now that it's known and disseminated, that particular fact is known and will henceforth never be "unknown" (short of a cataclysmic event). Science cannot be reversed; like time, it only progresses in one direction. This is not true of progress/success in many, many other professions.

And all the other stuff people already mentioned.

For writing an essay, I have the feeling you aren't writing an outline, so do that.

If you are writing an outline already and don't know where to start...lol i dunno man just think about it, try to make a point, make illustrations about the point, and evidence about those illustrations(PIE paragraphs).

you need to think of a context to write about. Like when you were 5 yaers old and your father showed you how to make bubbles and tried to help you understand them or something.
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)
