Clint Eastwood is such an amazing director, holy shit. All his recently directed movies have been so amazing, most recently Gran Turino, which is the best movie I've seen all year and probably one of my all time favorites now.

- Gran Turino
- Changeling
- Flags of Our Fathers
- Letters from Iwo Jima
- Million Dollar Baby
- Mystic River

kjdsfkjdshfskd , so good. It's a shame he's so old because he has really become something special, I hope he continues directing for many years to come.

he also is a great actor, often acts in his movies, produces them, and even composes a lot of the music for his movies too.

lol i had to analyze a film for its music for one of my classes
my first pick was Mystic River

dont get me wrong, its a fantastic fucking movie

has very little music. and considering the poignancy of some of the drama, music would have highlighted it well. I never watched any of his other movies for the music, but he really should have left that to someone else in that one.

The fact that there was little music to Mystic River adds to the film - makes it more gritty and rough.

How the hell was Gran Turino BAD? lol.

the only real reason not to have music is if you want the audience to recognize the situation as more real. sometimes, and only sometimes, music can abstract the audience, take it down a level of closeness or reality.

but in every other aspect music adds to the drama. im not talking music to overpower any dialogue or sound whatsoever, not filler music. most of the time you would not even hear it, but it would enhance the drama of the situation none the less.

verrryyy rarely does a movie have as little music in it as Mystic River

What I like about it? The movie has taught me more shit than all the movies I've seen combined. It's one of those things where you gotta watch and possibly learn a few things or two.

Gonna spoiler this, because i'll be giving away the plot: Why I liked Gran Turino
+ Show Spoiler +

One of the main themes of Gran Turino is overcoming barriers, not to say "racism" - since I don't think Clint's character is racist in that he hates blacks, asians, etc... but more that they make him uncomfortable because of the unfamiliarity. He befriends the Hmongs that live next door and as a result learns that he has more in common with them than he might think. Also the friendships he builds are conveyed really well, and seem quite meaningful.

There's also Clint's own internal struggle to overcome the traumas he faced during the Korean war, which haunt him throughout the movie until he finally is at peace in the end. For example, most people would expect Clint's character to kill all the gangsters at the end, especially because Clint's characters are always badass. He realizes though that he doesn't need to kill them to get what he wants, and he also wants to send a message to Thao that violence is not the only way to solve problems. He sacrificed himself to have the gangsters actually arrested and put in jail rather than retaliate violence on violence, which would only perpetuate problems in the future. So in the end, he is able to make peace with himself and die in a truly heroic fashion - not like his earning of the silver star during the Korean War for actually killing people.

Non Spoiler reasons for why I liked the movie:
- The acting was really good, especially Clint Eastwood, he's probably going to be nominated for the role, and just might even win it.

- It's funny as shit - I was pretty much constantly laughing my ass off through 3/4ths of the movie because of all the shit Clint Eastwood says - bunch of racist old white guy jabber for about 1.5 hours.

In all seriousness I think the (un)intentional comedy of Clint's character serves really well to lighten the mood so that the ending and overall climax of the movie doesn't turn into too much of a downer.

I didn't like Flags of Our Fathers

just a bunch of testosterone action that isn't as good as Saving Private Ryan's and a rather dull story after the action's over (in my opinion). It's not atrociously bad by any means, just.. mediocre to me. 2.5 out of 4 stars

I heard Letters of Iwo Jima was better though

edit: he is a kickass actor

You can't deny the chick in Gran Torino was terrible as an actor. The boy was pretty bad too. Clint was alright, reminded me of an old snake in MGS4. Dying, Old, but still badass.

Clint Eastwood is totally a badass actor with some pretty great directing skills. No wonder his name is an anagram for Old West Action.

i think foreigners acting in American films are often mistaken for being bad actors.

Yeah real actors only exist in America, I thought this was common knowledge.

This could be why you thought they were "bad actors"

"Open casting calls for Hmong actors were held in Hmong communities in Detroit, Michigan; Saint Paul, Minnesota; and Fresno, California. None of the Hmong actors in the cast had acted in a film before except Doua Moua." - from IMDB

pretty decent for people who never acted before, I mean you could tell that it wasn't natural for them, but so what.

Gran Torino was an awesome movie.

Although I thought Changeling sucked, Clint Eastwood's films have pretty much been 4-5 star classics.
