I just went through my collection and jotted stuff down that had romantic inklings in it. Should occupy you for a while.
There are some romantic animes in this but its mainly drama tho i think thats what hes looking for.
Definitely recommend Kanon (2006), Ef and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. These are very very good animes =))
I would also recommend Shakugan no Shana and Fate/Stay Night, they are like little romance shitload of drama and action stuff i liked these allot.

Oh, and Haruhi is (sort of) a romance. Then again, that show is sort of a mix of everything :p
Do you want shows with an element of romance or for the whole show to be romance? Because a LOT of the recommended shows are only a little bit romance, or have a romantic storyline as only one of their core elements.
And if you want supernatural romance, Kanon 2006 > ef > Clannad imo.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters is a very romantic anime. The characters express their love for the cards and become one with the heart of the cards. They sometimes even do crazy things to get their hands on rare cards, proving their undying love so that the card will join their deck in holy matrimony.

not to sound like a critic, but people mentioning elfen lied, kanon, kgne, parakiss.
I don't mean to be pounding on anyones views here but there needs tob e at least one counter to all this praised mainstream rubbish.
I saw all of them. Made me realise how many retards there exist in reviewing forums and in the anime community in general who have the audacity to give something 9/10 with such ease. I have never seen such a cheap character line up [parakiss did have some depth compared to the others] and character development. Very weak plot and very immature cast all together. I don't know where you guys find the substance in these anime.
And gundam seed fits into a whole new shit pile all together.
Watch Rose of Versailles, the depth of each character is amazing, you'll feel like you're reading a book. You will fall in love with the protagonist and the context in which she grew up + the conflicts she faces throughout her life. Or make the switch to Japanese drama/movies if you're really after romance. There are a few decent ones. It is extremely hard to find decent anime out there.

I have no idea where everyone got Elfen Lied was a romance. It was cute, gorish, hardly romantic (but maybe I was blinded by the wicked terrible dub work?). Kanon is torrents upon tidal waves of drama. The only romantic portion of it I could remember, Nagisa and Yuuichi, didn't even get an animated incarnation. Waiiit... there was suicide girl... Ayu, too, I guess. Makoto =/= romance whether or not there was a wedding.
And I guess the general consensus of the anime-watching community is that Kanon >> Versailles no Bara, something I guess you're the counter to. I bet next you're going to say Clannad was horrendous? I can't judge Versailles for myself as I haven't seen it (I will if a decent DVD rip comes out), but the fact you called Kanon depthless... fuck, you piss me off so much.

hmmm. someone recommended fruits basket to me. i think that's supposed to be really good but i never got the chance to see it myself.
oh and my taste in anime is the best! everyone else's choices suck or aren't romantic enough or are too popular(therefore not cool because only unpopular stuff is good).

Elfen Lied has strong romantic undertones, but if you thought that it was a romance story then I'm afraid you missed the point. And Death Note as romance? ...
If you go to the Wiki categories section you can search through anime and manga by category. Also you can look through places like animenewsnetwork and mangaupdates to find out about various series' (good manga are almost always turned into anime so if you search through manga by category and then sort them by rating, that should give you a good general idea of what series to look at).
Some of these recommendations are strange too. Every time there's an anime thread, people just toss out the names of their personal favorites regardless of what the op is looking for. ;;

Haha I'll be honest. I haven't seen more than 1 episode of Kanon '06 since the KAA rips were released (and that was ep 12 'cause I fell in love with the dance scene). Makoto can't be a romance. That was like... pet/owner relationship to me. Shiori I'll concede, seeing as she left her goodbye note while they were on a date. Nayuki (who if you'll notice I called Nagisa...) didn't kiss him in the anime, which I only heard about. MAI?!?! WHAT? WHAT KINDA FACES DID SHE MAKE WHILE THEY WERE DOING IT??!? "Oh, yeah... right... there. Um, okay, are you done yet? I have demons to slay and shit." I really need to rewatch this. And the dub... wasn't too bad. Chris Patton shouldn't be Yuuichi, but they didn't butcher Nayuki's voice too much that I recall.

Though... Shakugan no Shana.... is kind of, how do you say... shallow and pedantic. Yuuji's a bitch who got godmode powers with two girls going for him even though he's a TOTAL pussy (no, his training to use his sonzai no chikara to fight does NOT make him any less of one).

school days was actually an H-Game, just got into an anime, but really, this anime is more about tragedy than love/romance
anyway, there are much larger romance stuff in manga, especially shoujo, not much as shounen, but there are some, especially this one im reading atm: unbalancex2 aka unbalance x unbalance
