I'm trying to play FFIX.
So I downloaded epsXE and apparently I need a BIOS and fifty thousand other settings, whereas I'm used to the GBA or SNES emulators where I just pop in a game and I'm ready to go.

Anyways first off: How do I configure epsXE? Why is it taking me forever to figure out?

Second off, how do I configure FFIX? I downloaded 10 .rar's of the 1st disc which took forever, now what do I do? How do I make sense of 50 files that is supposed to represent 4 discs of one game?

its illegal to download PS bios online, what ur supposed to do is important it from the PS which u own.

the 10 .rar's probably compress, then get extracted to .iso files which the emulator can run

Oh what the hell.

I own FFIX but not a Playstation anymore.
So what exactly is a BIOS and how do they work?

ok tbh it's pretty easy to configure, I highly recommend you to read the epsxe forums where everything is configured.

Basically, to run epsxe you need.

1.Playstation BIOS (easy to find on the interweb, be smart)
2.Video plug-in (Pete OpenGL)
3.Audio plug-in (PeoP something)
4.Controller plug-in

On the forums, just like here on teamliquid, there are GUIDES, with all the links to get these plug-ins. Read them.

THEN, to configure the plug-in, it depends of the game you wanna play and your PC. FF9 is very popular so there are HUNDREDS of configuration guides to run it smoothly on the epsxe forums, search them, find them, read them.

But seriously, the complete configuration of the software once you have the files take 30 minutes top. If you have a decent IQ.

When I use to use epsxe I just googled the guide, bios, games, etc.

Now I have a chipped ps2 which is much better.
No I'm never serious.

Just google scph1001. Thats what you need.

You'll also probably need drivers. you can go here for that. I'd recommend Pete's OpenGL.

My sister just got epsXE working on her computer, so she must have gone through all the steps you need to do recently. If the information provided above isn't sufficient, you can pm me specific questions and I'll pass them on to her.

As yejin mentioned, the best thing to do is read forums. Every question you could ever have will be answered there. It just takes time to figure epxse out, once you get the hang of it it's really simple/easy.

With FFIX, there is a problem in one of the cut scenes which will make it crash 100%. I don't know if it happens with the latest version, but it did with 160.
Anyway if it does crash when you begin to climb up a ladder onto an airship after you've rescued Vivi, then you can download 153 and just copy and paste the save file into there.

if you truly own FF9, why the hell did you download it then? You can use epsxe to run the game from the cd drive, or you can just make your own .iso with your favorite image file making program (like alcohol 120%)

Yes good point. You can usually plop the game into your cd rom and load it into the emulator. Unless he just said he pwnt the game to prevent his blog from getting closed lol...

When I played FFIX on epsxe it crashed 100%, but in a different place (just before end of disc 1). I wouldn't be surprised if there were several places this occurred. It was so frustrating I ended up just buying the game.

That said, OP, if you have the game, just put it into your disc drive and play it from that and there'll be no problems. If you need to play it from the .iso for some reason, expect much frustration.

So far everything is working, I just got to the world map after rescuing the princess from some monster.

And I do own FF9, as well as FF8. They aren't technically mine but I have them somewhere in my possession. If I found them and knew they'd work with epsxe I would have done that instead of spending an hour downloading 50 separate files; only 2 at a time. But since I know nothing about PSX or any emulator rather than SNES and GBA - I didn't know that. And now that I have the file, I'm playing it.

So no use going in my basement looking for it on endless hours?
But if this downloaded FFIX crashes, if I play my real copy, will it not crash?
Since everyone is saying that certain scenes crash the game, I guess, making it unable to go farther?

The real question is why do you want to play FF9?

Yeah I knew it wasn't correct but for some reason epsXE just appeals to me more.
It reminds me of winXP, which I have fond memories of ever since getting a laptop with vista on it.

By the way in general this emulator, although much less well known, is better. It's faster, generally more compatible, has the same features more or less, and doesn't require plugins. It's very possible that ePSXe runs better if you have some specific video card that certain plugin works well with for certain games, but just try the other if you're having trouble with ePSXe.

Btw if you're using ePSXe anyway, check the sound and video driver settings. There's specific checkboxes you want to click for computability specifically for FF9. Look for it.
