The term simply has not evolved past that you will still see people refering to homosexual people as fags or faggots. Despite whether or not you yourself think of it that way the reason you use the word fag is because it became "popular" while attached to homosexuality.
A random word that you look up in the dictionary will not become as widespread as fag has because there is simply no reason to; are you really going to tell me that somebody would use the word "nugget" to insult somebody? No because it isn't already drilled into vocabulary and it never really was.

And my best friend is gay, and I mean maybe family is different, but my friends don't want me to avoid using words to consider their feelings. It sucks that some people get extra hardship because of their sexual orientation, or race or whatever, but you should treat your friends/family equally. Some form of political correctness is okay with me.
