So... first blog. I so far didn't gett a firm grasp on the grey area of what goes into Blogs and what goes into General, but I guess the reason I'm putting this here is because I basically want to share something and not so much discuss something.

You see, I've had a hobby for a couple of years now. It's something that not a lot of people do, nor many people understand. As with most creative hobbies that aren't 'mainstream' people think it's cute but a waste of time. I only have a few people around me that see the beauty of some of the stuff I make and are interested in the kind of things I do. I guess the same goes for Starcraft: a hobby that not many people can relate to. I therefore hope thatmaybe this community might appreciate something that you don't see every day: Chainmailing (making stuff out of metal rings).

I do have a reason for starting his blogentry. My mate, an amateur photographer, came over during the weekend and we spent all day making pics of stuff I made. I tink some of them turn out really really well and I just feel I want to share them with...well... anyone.

Still reading? This is where it gets good

In the next spoiler I put my favorite set of photos:

I have most of them in high-def as well. Hope you enjoy the beauties of this not-so-well-known hobby of mine!

They look nice, hard to describe why I like them, probably because it's neat and structured.

@ Wurz. There are several ways in which rings can be patterned. The patterns are called weaves and have different names. The pictures show about 7 different weaves. The most common on is Euro 4-1 (European 4 in 1) which is the genuine medieval pattern that thye used for armor and you can see it in the first pic of the second spoiler.

@ HotZ. It's just a past-time hobby. I make stuff whenever I feel like it. If your question is how many shirt I made I'd have to say 4, and working on a fifth one (and a small one for a friend's stuffed animal :p)

@DhakhaR. lol I knew that'd come up :p I tihnk he's wearing a fishnet or something though, doesn't look like metal rings.

@ Cirrus. Cheers I'll tell my mate someone liked the pics :p I taught myself to weave. There are some tutorial sites out there and if you have a good spatial awareness (dunno the English word, sorry) so can figure some stuff out by just looking at it.

@Spiral. Absolutely. Can you afford one though?

Depends really, the one with the brass (yellow) rings took me about 3-4 hours. The one I'm wearing took about 2,5 (and an additional half hour and much cursing to close it).

It'd depend on material, size, ringsize, sleeve/sleeveless etc, but the amount of hours that go into it easily add up to over 1000 € At the mo I have a shirt (short sleeves, just below waistlength) up for sale for 3250 €. In stores you can buy shirts from the factory for about 100-150 €, when you get it handmade it just takes so many more hours. The materials cost jack nought though. I'm working on an iron shirt (galvanised so it wont rust) that cost me less than 30€ for materials. It just takes time.

I saw a guy wearing a chainmail shirt and looking at the pattern I thought 'hey, I can do that'. So I gt some wire and pliers and made some stuff that wasn't too good, so I checked this Mail Artisans site so get some info and I found there's so many weaves you can do and so I got into it more, trying out stuff and that just developed into a real hobby.

@ Steve. I know most people who do this are really really into it, often involving LARP related shenanigans, spending huge amount of hours and time on making the weirdest things and refuse to use an electric drill for coiling because it isn't medieval. I try to avoid them. It's fun to do and the results are pretty cool but that's all it is for me.

@ Kefkalives. Well, go get some wire and pliers and start making some wicked stuff. Some weaves are pretty easy to pick up on and all your friends will think you're awesome.

Yeah that guy in commando (wasn't he supposed to be an Aussie for some reason? xD) probably had fishnet spraypainted silver or something xD

Yeah, can't wait to get into this myself. Got the wire, got the pliers, just need the powerdrill.

Can't find the powerdrill we did have, but reluctant to buy a new one for like $50 so is there any way you reckon you could have coil the wire? Perhaps with like a hand-operated drill? I know it would be tiring or cramp your arm up but I imagine it'd be fairly quick.

Could you make me a chainmail KTF jersey?

DO IT, PHOLON :D That would be awesome.

First attempt at making some chainmail stuff myself. Not sure what I am going to do with it yet (shirt, wrist bands, etc.). This is 12-4 using gal tie @ 1.25mm and 8mm diameter rings. About 327 rings or something in the wrist band.
