I was really hoping Shadowrun piled on the popularity. But it being released slightly before Halo 3 cut its lifespan severely. Shadowrun has no auto aim, even on the 360 version (from what I've noticed). Plus it has "perks" similar to Cod4, except you have to buy them and your guns ala CS.

1.6 is still really popular, loads of servers and loads of tournies. Probably only slightly less popular than css.

CS is not dying, it's alive and well. The pro scene is bigger than the source one if I'm not mistaken.

Still, you should get into sc because you won't magically be good at sc2, a lot of the fundamentals will be similar and you will be a lot better from the get go if you get good at brood war first

how sad that sc2 has no shield battery :(

Theres a decline in the pub servers (i think GA has 4 left or something), pug IRC servers are going down also and a server wont be populated to 10+ players at any one time.

At least in Australia anyways.

I know all the really good players pay like $6 a month to play on some of the better servers. They are, of course, really well moderated at all times, because you have to pay to play.

switching to cs:s seems like the easy answer if you just want to play a quality fps. The other answer is of course to play sc. The community might become split, but since this site at least is a foreign progaming site, it seems likely that we will follow whatever the proscene does. (and hopefully that won't fall apart too badly ><)

CS 1.6 is really popular here, there is a TON of steam and no-steam servers. (We all know the reason behind that)

Your 1.6 buddies are.. not well-informed.

http://store.steampowered.com/stats/

Hell, go look at Gotfrag's "prize money" section, there's still hundreds of thousands of dollars worldwide being poured into the game.

Steam bugged the stats so that's only the USA's 1.6 stats whilst that's pretty much source being played over the world..

CS might be dying but source is dying just as quickly if not more so.

Before steam decided to take the stats part down and then bug it... it was like CS 1.6 current players playing 300,000 whilst for source it was like 60,000.

Then steam took 1.6 off the stats page then bugged it.

I think people just call it "sudden" over there. Nothing very bad ass about it... Though it is pretty fun.

Uh... I used to play Source ages ago, and I'd like to know what makes you think it is bugged now? For as long as I can remember CS 1.6 was at like 100-120k, while Source was around 30-40k tops, and that was like 3 years ago.

Anyways the rate of adoption of Source has certainly been slow. I'm kind of surprised it has come so far, because when I was playing no one wanted to move over.

1.6 and Source are still 'popular' (popular being as far as what people play other than WoW) in the UK, but the competitive scene here has always been a shambles. Clans form and fold like every week because the scene is so fucking emo, and the few competitive teams that are LAN worthy here just don't practice as much as our European counterparts to actually do well.

No way that there are more ppl playing source than CS 1.6.

Well, maybe in the U.S. But not in Europe.

Can't really tell if CS 1.6 is dying personally, since it's immensely popular in Sweden and has always been...

1.6 still has more big tournaments than Source and both are far from dead.. Myself, I'm more a fan of CS:S since I hardly played the original game and there was no transition to Source for me. Playing 1.6 now feels really weird, I bet it's the same way for 1.6 vets trying out Source and I think this is where the whole rift b/w CS versions started.

Source does have some flaws that should have been looked at by now but I think overall it is suitable as a 1.6 replacement since it is a lot more visually appealing while maintaining a lot of the same gameplay. I repeat though, Source is not a perfect game but saying 1.6 is would be a lie (although 1.6 is probably slightly more suitable for professional play). In the end, the guy who is able to get the accurate shot off faster will get more kills and the team that can run strats better will win more rounds.

I'm gonna say the difference between SC2 and SC will be much more profound than the CS differences though (at least as of now). MBS, unlimited unit selection, automine, smart AI (lings that surround a target intelligently), etc really take away from a lot of the competitive features that made SC such a good e-sport since they're automating the game.

But then again, a game like C&C 3 has some decent money tournaments so there's no telling how SC2 will turn out in that sense

To the OP: I'm sure SC skills will be highly transferable so I'd stick with it for now.
