Basically I was sleeping and my pillow knocked down an open bottle and it spilled. So...
My laptop got wet from a water spill. However, it didn't come with contact with the keyboard. Will it be okay? Only the bottom part got wet!
My roommate luckily saved it but he doesn't know how long it was there for. My laptop however wasn't wet from the keyboard, otherwise I knew it was over. However, if water made contact with the bottom part of the laptop, could it die? I checked the battery and it was barely wet. If not, wet at all...
omg omg >_> btw i'm on it right now!

if it was just water is is usually ok

Are you sure?? Because just in case I googled around and people's laptops have stopped functioning. But then again, all of their cases was because the water made contact with keyboard.
ahhhhhhhhh T_T
btw congrats on the Blue Letters!! ^:^

thanks,
and yes, if it didn't actually get inside the laptop and mess up the electronic parts in there it should be ok.
|
u might consider turning off immediately and drying everything as best you can, leave it out to air dry for the night. That saved my cell phone after a toilet dunk and about 2 seconds of full immersion.
|
The same happened to me. Just leave it for 1-2-3 days without turning it on or pulling any kind of electrik devises in it.
I hope it'll be good :D GL

Well I know for a fact that the water did not make contact with keyboard, therefore nothing should have really gotten inside?
Because if this was my desk
[ laptop mousepad water bottle ] [Bed]
The mousepad was wet, so I can conclude nothing on the keyboard got wet unless the water like magically jumped.

if a laptop gets wet from water only, it should be fine if you dry it for a long time before turning it on.

You're... on it right now. Isn't that pretty much self-explanatory ?

Well yeah, but laptops could be working now, BUT they could die later on. That's why I'm asking if whether or not I should take any initiative or precautions.

It's never a bad idea to do backups to take precautions, but really what else are you going to do? You can't open it up a laptop and let it air out. The best you can do is leave it off but really it seems like you're in the clear.

I too think that I'm okay..but I'm going to keep it off whenever I don't really need it for the next three days I guess.
But why should I keep it plugged in?

Actually that was a really shitty thing to say. 5 hours of sleep, I'm editing that. >>
If your laptop is already fucked up by a spill, you let it sit on its own for a few days and then you try it. If the entire thing actually gets fried (and you can't return it), you can let it sit with its charger for like weeks/months to help evaporate the last invisible bits of liquid and you might be able to bring it back to life.
|
Yeah, like people have said, LET IT DRY TOTALLY before you attempt to turn it on. This means letting it sit for multiple days (preferably in front of a fan or something).
Basically, if you turn it on while its still wet, it may short circuit OR what happens with keyboards is that the circuitry starts "eroding" and crossing over. This happened to one of my desktop computers and I actually look apart the keyboard and all of the stuff was crossed over and pressing like the "c" button on my computer also made it hit the ctrl and windows button and other stuff like that. Not fun.

How many days would you say is plenty?
|
If you're still typing on it then it will probably be fine.
|
Well as I said the thing is I didn't spill any water (not even like 0.1 oz) on the keyboard! only the bottom part ^^; of the laptop, which my question is: does that affect anything?
since i knwo that if water goes in the keyboard, there are all the important parts underneath..so...=P

Water on the bottom should be just fine, the plastic shell should take care of it.

^ That's what I'm hoping
But damn, a top contributor on Yahoo Answers gave me this answer:
Depends entirely on whether water got inside the laptop. We can't tell from here
The first thing is: Immediately Turn it off, unplug it (or remove the battery if it is a laptop).
If you leave the battery in, there is still current flowing in the machine and that's what you DON'T want to happen when there is water to short between circuits.
Turn the keyboard or laptop upside down. Blot up all the water you can reach with a paper towel. Leave the machine in a warm place for at least 48 hours until it is thoroughly dry. DO NOT TEST IT to 'see if it works' - by applying current to the circuits you may be administering the coup de grace.
I don't know who's right. But for now, I only use this whenever I need it / check updates to see what I should do!
|
If it wasn't on, let it dry for 24-48 hours.
The keyboard is usually a tray that actually keeps water out of the computer, good laptops have a rubber ring around the hole/area which the keyboard slides into.
If youre typing on it and it hasnt shorted its prob fine...
|
the keyboard part didnt get wet! only the bottom part -.-
|
try to pee on it so the water will get owned.

If it's just water it should be fine even crappy water isn't that bad. Proper thing to do would be to take it apart and make sure everything is dry if not dry it using a blow drier on lowest to speed things up but not melt shit.
Just make sure it's dryed is all.
|
my friend once dropped his laptop into the snow :O it was totally soaked, but we just dried it out really well before turning it on...

Meh. I don't have a blow dryer with me. And of course, I don't think it's safe to take apart the computer unless you really know what you are doing.
I have only been using the computer for like every two hours or so.
|
just blow a fan at it or something and let it dry. chances are if you are using it now it's not going to die.
|
I spilled water all over my keyboard a few days ago....a good amount, since it was dropping out of the sides. I turned it off...let it sit for about 15 minutes and it's working fine. Your case is probably less severe since it only got on the underside of your laptop. No big worries, let it sit for an hour and it should be ok.
|
Seriously, don't worry too much. I spilled an entire glass full of tonic water and cranberry juice all over my laptop.
I just dismantled the computer and cleaned it out. With a slightly damp paper towel or rag, you can wipe the "insides." Hopefully, they weren't too much in contact with whatever you spilled. The keyboard should have kept/absorbed most of it anyways.
If the drink had sugar, then simply take out the keyboard (most laptops let you do this). You can honestly just soak it in water, and let it air dry. It won't cause any damage to it. Just remember to take out the screws and remember where they go so you can put it back correctly.
DISCLAIMER: This is only from my personal experience. All laptops are not the same, and what I did to mine, you may not be able to do with yours.
EDIT: Oh yeah, that Yahoo answer guy is right. Take out the battery, hehe.
|
^ My laptop keyboard didn't get wet at all ;P
But yea it's been off for like 6 hours now. I only check it every once in awhile for the day >_>
|
It's been around 24 hours now since the incident. I turned it in on for like 4 hours total between that time.
Should I let it dry out more?
