So the stock market is crashing worldwide, and shows no sign of stopping. There are rumors that society itself may collapse, even with swift government reactions. What have you done to prepare for this possible collapse?
Personally, at University, it is pretty hard for me to be able to do anything much, especially in Illinois, that bastion of anti-gun law. So I bought a wrench yesterday and some canned food/other foods, and have a lot of bottled water. I suspect that will be only enough to last aboud two weeks, so I also have a Brita filter to get me a little bit more water.
The good news is as I'm on the lake and I know how to fish, I may be able to feed myself there. The bad news is it's nice to have electricity and not being cold in Chicago, and that may be a problem.
What preperations have any of you taken?

Agreed. This is about a depression not an armageddon. In which case digging a basement would help.

Adoption is a much better alternative to having your own kids and putting more people into this world. Your adopted kids will love you just as much and your love for them would feel even more complete than the love for your own child, because of that extra feeling that you're helping a better world that only the parents of an adopted child has!

hopefully it wont turn out like the fallout series with everyone nuking eachother because the government hasnt built the vaults yet and being a ghoul would be kinda bad...youd live for a long time and stuff, but youd probably get blown over in the wind. also there wouldnt be wicked mad stuff like power armor.
to be honest i think it will be relatively calm but im sure a few individuals will take the opportunity to cause havoc and steal shit / burn cars etc.
i havent really done anything in preparation for this but im a really paranoid, anxious person and ive got alot of canned beans and fruit / vege garden / water tank / candles n shit incase something happens. its lucky my town is half full of old people so i can always rape and pillage (not so much rape) their houses for supplies

can you explain the adoption thing? people will have more pressing concerns if theres a big depression like staying alive rather than whether or not they will fuck for kids or pay for ones that arent even their own. who would do that, if money gets so tight you can barely get by?

First of all, in modern day society, the relative cost of food is extremely low. When you think about it, it is somewhat insane that all of us don't have a supply of a year or two worth of food. Why depend on someone else just to literally not starve?
Second, our food distribution system only has a couple of days worth of food before more must be delivered. It is an extremely fragile and completely untested system (against disasters) that we all take for granted. We are all, a society at whole, depending on an on-demand system always being there to feed us and take care of our needs. It is insanity.
Third, the risk of people starving because of an economic disaster is much higher now than, for example, the great depression. People starved during the great depression. The current event we are now facing is much larger and could potentially be worse. Add that to the modern food distribution system and larger (and more dense) population, and it is worse all around.
And finally, things could get a lot worse than you think a lot quicker. Even if people don't starve, food would be rationed. You couldn't just go out and buy food even if it was available, no matter how much money you had. This is known as hoarding. In fact, if you just buy food for yourself now like I described above, that could even be known as "hoarding". Food is a funny thing, and society will turn against you if they think you have food. Thats why you should get it now and don't tell anyone about it.
You probably think what I'm saying is completely ridiculous and paranoid.
But does anyone remember that little economic hiccup we had a while back, about 6 months ago? Probably not. I'll give a brief reminder of it. The inflation leading up to the current crisis caused the dollar to lose some of its value. Many of you probably remember the high gas prices.
One side effect that probably most of you didn't pay attention to was that the price of rice was increasing due to this. And since many other (poor) nations use our dollar as their money, those people were not able to feed themselves with the increasing prices of rice. It was so bad that in the Philippines you could get life in prison for hoarding rice.
Let me repeat that. It was so bad that in the Philippines you could get life in prison for hoarding rice, 6 months ago.
http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline/2008/04/philippines-thr.html
Remember the food emergency for poor countries? http://www.azstarnet.com/allheadlines/234386
Even less people know about this, but during that time Mountain House, a company that specializes in storable foods, got essentially most of their stock bought out by the US Govmnt, and I think they may still be back ordered. Same thing for internet grocer.
If you remember, about 6 months ago costco was only selling one bag of rice per person, so that everyone could get some.
http://cbs5.com/wrapper_consumer/seenon/rice.shortage.rationing.2.705309.html
which led to the issue of food rationing here in the US: http://www.nysun.com/news/food-rationing-confronts-breadbasket-world
The dirty secret here is that there is only enough food for people to buy it according to our current on-demand system. If people start storing food there will be shortages. If our economy collapses, you may not have food. You are a fool if you don't take this seriously. Being utterly dependent on others for food is a good way to starve.

The CostCo thing was a result of people believing retarded rumors like the stuff you're saying.
Unfortunately, we don't produce food based with an on-demand system. There's tons of leftovers all over the place at every single level of distribution.

The costco thing was a result of people buying extra rice because of rumors. Unfortunately, there were still real shortages because of it. Just like the markets keep going down because of rumors that banks may collapse at any time (or more properly, the whole system works because people just believe in it).

The nice thing about being at a university is that you are not only surrounded by the best of the best for survival (young men who have some level of education), but you can also procreate freely. so when the time comes, society collapses, you can hide out in your dorm, and start society where you are

Well I´m in Germany which means we are relativly (And by relativly I mean it´s bad but not like in the USA) well of since our Bank system was overregulated - no one complains about that NOW though.
The primary Banks for Hans Mustermann (German Sixpack Joe) are local "Sparkassen" owned by the communes - their goal isn´t to produce profit but to provide a service. This means that they may not offer interest rates comparable to "proper" banks but they are also not as much effected by the current crisis. To prevent missunderstandings: they are NOT immune.
The light at the end of the Tunnel is that the crisis will increase pressure on the USA to agree to more regulation for international financial markets. Deregulated Marktes grow faster, that is a fact but they also suffer more if a bubble bursts - as seen right now.
The biggest victim of this crisis is the US status as "masters of capitalism".

yeah i've been thinking about this a lot lately. i actually do want to stock up on supplies, i'm mostly just cheap i don't want to buy a bunch of stuff unless there's actual signs that that is necessary.
actually my area of BC is already an earthquake zone, so all of us are supposed to be prepared because we're due for an earthquake.
that combined with the economy does leave me concerned so hopefully i will stop being cheap and go get some extra stuff in the next couple days.
and i think society is in a pretty poor state of logic when being prepared is a mockable offense? imo the more prepared a person is that is a quick way of identifying fellow people with a brain in their head.
